    Sup.

Got a mate with a Focus Sam ebike and he’s been having problems with the batteries and he’s thinking they may be fried.

He’s getting a red flashing light on the charger and they basically won’t charge.

The bike is well out of warranty now but he’ll still contact the supplier to discuss options.
He’s got the integrated downtube battery and the tec pack add on too. Neither seem to be powering up the bike.

I told him to turn it off and on again, but seemingly this didn’t help. 😉

In the mean time, has anyone had battery packs rebuilt/refurbished?

I’m thinking this is going to be something that comes up a lot with the proliferation of eeb’ers.

Can’t imagine it’s going to be cheap either 😳

I had a quick search around and couldn’t find any genuine batteries for sale particularly.

I’m pretty sure there is also a battery rebuild article somewhere but can’t find it just now

I noticed the below link in my google search

    https://www.countybattery.co.uk/battery-repair-service/

There seem to be quite a few battery repairers about, may be worth a call, might even be somewhere localish

Also try peddlers forum as well

Ps – can you try another charger and try the tec pac on another bike.

    Thanks towzer. Really helpful.
He doesn’t have any fellow Focus riders but it’s possible the shop might have a charger to try.

I’ll take a read through those links cheers 👍

I’d be surprised if Focus don’t help him out, as manufacturers are keen not to feed the idea that ebikes are a liability outside of warranty, and also, Focus is under the same ownership as Santa Cruz, so hopefully the same out of warranty service.

Dunno about where he got it from, but my lbs Sprockers cycles in Kilmarnock sell a huge amount of focus ebikes, worth calling them to see if it’s a known issue and how Focus deal with it, they’ll be happy to talk.

If both batteries are behaving the same it could be a motor problem rather than a battery problem. Has he had a Shimano service centre run diagnostics?

No. It’s literally just happened yesterday when he came to use it.
He’s worried about being able to get replacements so I thought it’d be good to know if refurbishment was a solid option if it comes to that.

I’d agree tbh, more likely a motor, charger or loom issue if it’s happened to both batteries, I’d imagine his main battery has done far more cycles than the tech pack, so you’d expect tech pack to last longer in effect?.

As others have said, it’s unlikely to be a battery fault simultaneously affecting both batteries at exactly the same time.

More likely a problem with the wiring that connects the batteries to the motor, or the motor itself.

    Cheers.
Will certainly explore what is possible within our understanding of electrics.

This is the trouble with ebikes.

Cable or connector problem would be my guess.

Where is he trying to charge the batteries as the charger doesn’t like working below 5 degrees.. Loads of focus owners mention it.. I being one have to bring my bike into the house to charge it unless I use my tec pack.
Apologies if you already do this
