I’ve been looking at replica Eames lounge chairs

    Has anyone bought one?

Are they any good, or do I forget about them?

No way I could afford an original

everyone copies Eames stuff so there are all kinds of quality of copy.
we have a couple of Eames dining chairs from different copiers – one is good this other is pretty poor.
there’s probably less people making the lounge chair but I imagine the quality still varies.

I desperately wanted one until I sat in one.

At 6″4 the copy i tried was absolutely tiny.

    I would try before ordering.

I think Vitra and Herman Miller do the ‘official’ reproductions of the original and run to £5k or thereabouts.

The affordable copies that I’ve seen have had a noticeably cheap look and feel to them. For me, part of the pleasure in owning a piece like this, aside from the beautiful proportions, is the quality of construction and materials used…the copies fell well short.

I hankered after one for years and even contemplated importing a one from the states (considerably cheaper at the time, even accounting for VAT & import duty). Luckily for my bank account, when I eventually sat in one I discovered that I didn’t find it all that comfortable.

If I were minted, I’d definitely have one as ‘a piece’, just to oggle.

Vitra offer a larger lounge chair for taller people.

My wife got me a replica for my birthday recently. I find it plenty comfy (I’m only 5’7) and it looks great. I fully understand the appeal of owning an original, but that’s never going to happen and what I’ve got is a beautiful piece of furniture made more practical by virtue of not costing more than I could afford to replace.

The original was designed to be affordable – the vitra one is just a copy anyway.

Is that correct about the Eames chairs?

I’m currently sat at home on a genuine Herman Miller Eames pad chair and looked it up – $3029!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If that’s for real mine is for sale! That will fund my sons BMX racing season to the end of the year and next

We have Eames dining chairs from Vita Interiors in Bath. They are well made and actually superior to the official John Lewis ones, as ours are made of fibreglass (like the originals) rather than injection molded plastic (like John Lewis). Ours weigh loads and also cost ~1/3 the price of the JL ones.

Vita Interiors also do the lounge chair and have a physical shop in Bath (as well as an internet shop) so you can have a look if you’re anywhere near there or visiting on holidays.

Bit of a thread bump here guys – i’m looking at getting 4 of the Eames DSW chairs, and i’m wondering if there’s much difference in quality between the ones selling on ebay for £25-30 or the ones for twice that price from various interior stores or is it just a mark up? I’ve seen the fibreglass ones on the vita interiors page which are nice, but I think the cheaper matt plastic ones will actually work better for us – anyone got experiences good or bad of the cheap ebay ones & if possible recommend me a supplier?

I know they’re everywhere just now but I like them, me & the wife done some furniture re-arranging with some of the Vitra ones in John Lewis & it looked surprisingly good with the table we have – not £300 per chair for the real ones good – but for £100 for 4 chairs, if I got fed up with them they could be relegated to the shed for outdoor use on sunny days, of which there are almost 3 per year in Scotland.

    These:

    Cheers!
    John
