I need a simple, fairly cheap bike that can carry a child seat to run baby catfood around on. I was thinking of one of those Dutchie bikes, anyone got one, had one, got any opinions, do they weigh tons, are they well made etc.

    Thanks in advance.

They’re pretty hard to get hold of and are often quite pricey for what they are. If ever you’re over in Germany or Holland you could pick one up really cheap.

One of my students has one, and it is a fooooking heavy bastard of a thing. Add a child seat + child, and it will be a real pig on anything but a flat surface.

Lots of steel, and we ain’t talking 853, here…

where are you based? I think there’s a place in the open market in Brighton that does them.

The current issue of Velovision gave the Fahrrad-Manufaktur S-300 a good review.
“A massively practical, mid-price town bike imported by Bikefix, complete with Chainglider, hub gears, hub dynamo and more… “

Wifey has a Ridgeback with 8-speed hub gear, front and rear drum brakes and big wide tyres. Is the business for lugging Thump around in. RRP was £400, but I got it for £300ish. Not light but what does it matter – it’s got a kid on the back!
Carrera used to do something similar in the Subway range.

All this practicality means shi’ite when it comes to having to maintain them. Just changing a flat takes forever as you generally have to unhook the gears / chainguard etc, plus try and lift the bloody thing off the ground. They also cost the earth if you buy one of those daft retro ones.
