It always confuses me how so many people can be so vehemently against something that would benefit them. Sensible gun laws, nope, health system so people don’t die purely because they’re poor, nope. The rich I almost understand as often they just want to protect their wealth and don’t need to worry about medical costs and shootings in public schools, but the vast swathes of poor people who would benefit from such things….don’t get it.

Have you aver listened/watched to American news, it is just pure propaganda, they are brainwashed from an early age that Anerica is the greatest country on earth, and everyone else is just jealous of them. How so many are taken in by such an obvious lie is incredible.

But we are the same, the message is not quite the same, but we are also brainwashed into a way of life. Just look how many people say things like British police are the best in the world or the bbc is without parallel etc Both fairly common statements on this forum and both completely nonsense nationalistic statements.

Like the Americans we have been brainwashed that low wage inflation, high housing inflation, individuality rather than sticking together are good ideas, and that poverty is the fault of the poor and all they need to do is just buck their ideas up to be rich.

We should be looking at America as an example and thinking, **** if they can be conned so easily, whats the con that is being played on us. But national arrogance wont allow us to think like that because we must be superior.

What happens if the 2 armed grpups have a face off?

That could be the moment America finally faces up to the need for some gun contol measures. End to open carry laws? Ban on assault rifles?

What happens if you continue to see a rise in White supremacists wandering the streets armed to the teeth in the belief that they have theire presidents approval.? Should black and hispanic people just cower away?

The state police allowed a bunch of terrorists to wander into the State house to intimidate Democrat lawmakers. That was bound to be a watershed moment.

Did no one ask all those protesters why they felt the need to bring guns and dress like call of duty avatars to a protest about easing of lockdown measures? The whole thing had nothing to do with guns. “Because it’s my right” isn’t really a good enough answer. They’re also living in a country where, despite the frequency of mass shootings, they are pretty unlikely to end up in an armed confrontation….. Unless every other kn0bhead there has a gun! 🙄

OK so this is kinda interesting. Because one of the problems in Michigan is that the anti-lockdown people are also convinced that it’s connected to an attempt to bring in gun control. It isn’t- Michigan <is> trying to introduce more restrictions but it’s from before the lockdown.

Maybe something to do with Trump’s 3 Liberate tweets- “LIBERATE MINNESOTA!” “LIBERATE MICHIGAN!” “LIBERATE VIRGINIA! and save your great 2nd Amendment. It is under siege!” and other comments about putting governor’s under siege, who knows eh?

So seeing armed people on the other side will be a shock for the people for whom it’s all about the second amendment.

    Never in a million years.

It would prove that bigger guns are needed.

It’s the most backwards first world country there is and the stances on guns and healthcare are mind boggling to me. I have a few friends over there, mainly customers from work who I’ve become friendly with, and most of them agree and also find the health care and gun situations mad. Just seems they are vastly outnumbered unfortunately

    But it wasn’t. It’s normal.

So what are they allowed to do in the state house before police get involved? Could they point the guns at people? Shout intimidating (if not directly threatening them) stuff at them whilst pointing a gun at folk?

I don’t want to know what would happen in the aftermath of it kicking off, with lives lost. I’d hope that it would actually shock them into the start of gun control. But I’m not sure I could listen to people saying it was necessary to keep the status quo. Don’t like a policy? Take your tooled up mates to the town hall till they change their mind. Madness.

also find the health care and gun situations mad.

The healthcare thing is just a tragedy of history really. Its not an issue of health provision as much as insurance and who provides that. Health insurance has always been administered by employers for some reason – that means its not your doctor but your employer’s HR department thats ultimately in charge of your health. Its not a system of heath administration the US would choose if it built and insurance-based health care system from scratch tomorrow – it just the one they’re stuck with.

The reason the US clings to that system is its because it has become part of the system good-doggy perks you get as an employee – health care packages are performance-related in the same way as having a parking space with your name on it or a comfier chair.

Margeret from accounts with the wooden leg needs a reserved parking space more than you – but you earned it.

Your secretary is sat at her desk all day but you deserve a better chair than her because you got that promotion.

The guys in the warehouse do a more physically demanding job than you and its more important to their working welfare that they have access to better medical care – but whats much more important is that you are made to feel more important to the company than them.

And thats why Americans recoil in horror at the idea of universal healthcare – its not giving them something for free, its taking away something they’ve earned.

That’s just really sad and rather pathetic though isn’t it. Turning health in to a competition and people accepting/actively not trying to break that is, well, sad and rather pathetic.

That’s the way it’s always been is one of the shitiest excuses for anything. The supposed best country in the world shouldn’t have an issue with redefining something as important as health care. The fact they do proves what a backwards place it really is.

This made me lol at his meeting with the Republican Members of Congress this week. wrt. their response to Coronavirus. Not everybody would want to admit it.

‘And I spoke with Angela Merkel today. I spoke with Prime Minister Abe of Japan. I spoke with many of the leaders over the last four or five days. And so many of them, almost all of them — I would say all of them; not everybody would want to admit it — but they all view us as the world leader, and they’re following us.’

Being reported over there that those Abbott rapid tests (gives a result in 15 mins) they use in the White House to ensure anybody near Trump is negative have at least a 15% false-negative failure rate. Results from another check say 25%.

The ‘Typhoid Mary’ of our age! It’s the wish of my heart that Angry Tinkerbell gets a really bad dose and suffers for it. Maybe he might learn something important about it, like hubris. Somehow I doubt it.

I would say it’s more to do with the lobbying and behind-the-scenes power of the healthcare industry + Americans seem to be brainwashed from an early age that any socialist policies = communism and a slippery slope to all their ‘freedoms’ being taken away.

The whole co-pay part of the US healthcare just blows my mind, even with decent insurance you can still end up paying a fair chunk out of your own pocket.

I think what he needs is a good dose of humility. He has hubris by the bucketful already, sadly without the mythological downfall as yet. And yes, it’s the most beautiful hubris, obviously.

Bit late for that. Any capacity for humility has been extinguished by a life which has rewarded him from birth for his narcissistic sociopathy.

A bit more about the conference, where he’s pushing ‘Obamagate’, a conspiracy that doesn’t actually exist, except in the minds of deranged right-wingers, QAnon, and Angry Tinkerbell; you have to read down the boingboing comments to actually get some clarity.
One comment was interesting, AT (Angry Tinkerbell) seems to be using Stalin’s playbook, in a roundabout way, with regard to his seeming dismissal of the rising death toll in the US – “one death is a tragedy, a million deaths are a statistic”.

He has actually tweeted the last minute of the press conference as if it is something to be proud of!

Amazing, isn’t it. His issue was Weijia Jiang (CBS, born in China) asked a ‘nasty’ question that dared to mention people losing their lives, and why was he treating this as a global competition.

Much of his briefing was spent comparing the number of tests per capita carried out in the US with South Korea (a country that successfully deployed rapid testing and contained the virus, so by definition won’t be doing as many tests now).

He then got upset when Jiang didn’t move away from the mic and was upset I assume that Kaitlan Collins (CNN) didn’t barge her out of the way. These are the two correspondents Trump has previously said he has issues with.

Plus replying ‘ask China’ to Jiang was unfortunate at best.

Do think though that rather than ‘pushing his buttons’ (which prob makes good TV for their news networks) more factual questions to the guy who’s heading up the testing would be better.

Dear God! Have you seen his twitter account? Its the ramblings of a madman!

He must just literally sit online all day monitoring mentions of himself on Twitter and visiting conspiracy theory websites about Obama

No wonder he’s handling this so badly. He’s clearly not got the time in his day to do owt else?

The man is an absolute lunatic

    Kuco

I don’t think Weijia Jiang was pushing buttons, I thought it was a legitimate question she asked. He’s always going on about how he’s doing more of this and that compared to other countries. I also thought it was racist to say to Weijia Jiang “go ask China”

To walk away in a huff and then to twitter you were ganged upon hardly shows you’re the leader of a great nation to the rest of the world. China and North Korea must piss themselves laughing at his news conferences.

The whole ‘plandemic’ thing is really starting to get out of hand now, difficult to see how such things can be controlled, because removing the threads and banning just fuels the “ ‘they’re’ banning this, it must be true, there must be something ’they’ don’t want us to see!” rhetoric.
