I always thought the oldest clube was Sheffield FC, not Sheffield United FC. I may be wrong, but United were formed after loads of other clubs, like Forest

This ir right. Sheffield fc is the oldest club. Sheffield United is the oldest ‘united’

Shropshire’s other club, The New Saints is another good one. A reverse TLA from the days when village side Llansantffraid took a sponsors name the afore mentioned Total Network Solutions.  Later incorporated nearby Oswestry and unlike the other unmentionable side from the county now feature regularly in European football.

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned Harland & Wolff Welders who play in the Irish League.

Always imagined them being a bunch of right hard bastards who played in hobnail boots.

    A reverse TLA

I think that would be a “backronym.”

As I recall that happened a few decades ago and it made the national news.  Or perhaps the other way round.

Sadly it has never happened, and probably never will. There was a game between the two that went to penalties a few years ago and ended up 5-4 but that’s not the same thing.

Scottish fans of a certain age may recall the “legendary” Dukla Pumpherston Sawmill and Tannery.

And for Half Man Half Biscuit fans (apologies Michael Palin) there’s no team like Barnstoneworth United.
