I just received a notification that my subscription to OS Maps is due. I earlier subscribed to ?outdooractive? for the mapping, which was subsequently eaten by Fatmap which was in turn eaten by Strava, so now I have a subscription to Strava which therefore also supplies mapping. I’m not sure if the Strava mapping renders OS Maps superfluous. Or vice versa. Does anyone know what advantages one has over the other? Do I really need both?  I use Strava for the segments and suchlike, so I’d prefer to get rid of OS Maps, but not if they have a distinct advantage from a mapping POV. Thoughts?

Strava could possibly be better for route planning as you can see the heatmaps etc.  I don’t use either for routes, just use the software with my Garmin. RidewithGPS is another I sometimes use (free).

I think that Strava are not bringing over the OS Mapping that FatMap used to have….which is a shame (or at least I don’t know where to find it – it doesn’t seem to be a selectable layer). FatMap also had IGN and other Europe which made it great for overseas trips.

So I have memorymap and a subscription to OS maps through them, and I wouldn’t want to not have OS Maps tbh. Much prefer mapping and plotting with an OS map.  So two subs it is.

There was a similar thread on here a month or two ago that had some info on alternative forrin mapping apps, but can’t find it

Outdoor active is still a stand alone mapping app.

I think that Strava have eaten Fatmap though. Now if Strava fully incorporate OS maps (and IGN) with decent route planning than Strava will be King of the Hill – maybe. This will kill off komoot, map my ride and  few others.

If you can’t beat the opposition, just buy them up.

This was discussed a few weeks back and I thought the result was that Strava aren’t doing the os mapping or the ign mapping either. It was being removed and not replaced.

Or did I completely misread and misunderstand what was posted?

DickB your reading of that earlier FatMap thread is the same as mine. Strava official line is:

We appreciate that many of you use certain FATMAP features that will not be available in Strava in time for the coming northern hemisphere winter. This includes waypoints, personal guidebooks, national topo maps (including IGN and OS maps), offline map downloads of the FATMAP map and live snow and piste information. We are exploring adding these and similar features to Strava in the future.

Exploring sounding a little non-committal in that last sentence

Aah – OK – i didn’t see that. My fault for spending too much time reading about woke fridges and not enough on important stuff.  So now my question to myself is do I need the Strava subscription … ?

As much as I enjoy looking at OS Maps I think heatmap (and now the introduction of community photos) renders them a bit superfluous I think.

That said, I’m now paying for Strava AND Komoot just for Komoots ‘Collections’ feature as it’s a very satisfying way to bundle up planned routes or completed routes.

In my view, it’s OS for the mapping and Strava for the heat map. I bought Backcountry Navigator ages and when it was a one-off and I seem to have free OS mapping forever.

Sorry, I didn’t read my own thread…in my head I thought I’d type I thought I saw a thread where this was discussed a few weeks ago…instead it sounds like I’m staying something like you should already know it – sorry!

No need to be. I didn’t read it as a criticism ?

I’m with Molgrips i think OS and strava for the heat map is a powerful combo. One of the downsides of IOS is no back country navigator. So i pay for both. But for me navigation is something really worth paying for

Strava (for heatmaps) and OS (for background mapping) used here too.

But I also have a map and compass and I’m not afraid to use it. Though I admit to referring to GPS now and then these days in extremis.

    Me:

Garmin with a TalkyToaster Map for when out on the bike.

For route planning I use Bikehike and the Strava heatmap (from within my phone).

I am not heading to forestry areas with a tight mass of routes. I understand that Trailforks is better for that sort of thing.

You can look at the Strava heat map with a free account, but there’s no route planning capability.

I’m currently paying for OS (partly out of lethargy, partly out of familiarity) and for Komoot, which is where I do most of my route planning. I also use Garmin Connect and I still have Garmin Basecamp. (Using the latter for planning means hooking devices up with cables to transfer the routes, so that’s no longer used really.)
