    Not so long ago an employee at the NHS sold punters’ data to an insurance company. It happens. They got fired. No-one’s put the genie back in the bottle.

    Does the data go outside of the UK?

    Does the data go outside of the UK?

    Who knows, because of this;

    The company I authorise may use an intermediary company to make the enquiry

    But apparently I should take it on faith that they choose a good company and I should ‘get a grip’ for wanting to know who that company might be…

    Do you have something to hide?

    No. As I said, I’m happy to share my details with my employer.

    No, you should get a grip because there is no data worth selling!

    Alright, no need to be antsy. I’ve already said I’m going to ‘get a grip’ sorry that wanting to be careful is apparently ridiculous to you…

    If it works like the ‘my licence’ system, where an individual inputs their own postcode, driver number and NI number, that’s all pretty useful stuff to a fraudster. Looking up the full address on the voters roll using the first part of the driver number and postcode is a dawdle.

    CG I had the same thing happen with Aviva, but they admitted liability and sacked the person or persons involved.

    This. Surely there are more important things to worry about? Companies that deal with data have to jump through hoops to keep it secure so a “3rd party” doesn’t automatically mean your information is going to someone in a shed in Uganda to start buying stocks and shares in your name.

    Tell me about it! Things have become much tighter and more involved in recent months, due to the requirements of certain prospective clients we’ve been chasing at work.
    But then ours isn’t just personal data, it involves credit card details and bank details, so we’re effectively part of the banking industry.

    GJP – really? Was that reported in the news? I accused them before that story broke.

    c_g I searched for that story on the internest, never found anything. I wondered if it had been pulled, sub-judice or whatever, or if Aviva had blanked it on google. I’m fairly sure it was on the D Tel website in the past. Two chaps fired, ISTR, business news pages.

    And I’d want to know who held my license details on file, beyond my employer.

    That’s the one, thanks, it’s an interesting site, though is it a mainstream news outlet?
