DH tyres – which ones have you got on with?

As above really – got some minions and some big betty’s but someone recommended some rain kings , got me thinking there might be other better options out there

Conditions will mainly be slightly damp to really damp, rooty etc

I like my 2.35″ Minions in all respects other than they wear out too quickly, rears especially. However, I now have two good fronts so going to run front/front for a while and see how it goes. Great tyre though, would definately recomend.
Tried to get some 2.4″ Fire FRs to see if they would last longer but they are HUGE and wouldn’t fit either my frame or fork, so stuck to Minions.

minions, nevegals, also now running swampthins and im really impress in dry rooty, rocky conditions and would go for them again tbh.

they are shit in the wet but seem to be great for me in drier conditions.

Minion DHFs for me too, never even bothered trying a DHR as i’m not sure why i’m supposed to want more traction on the dh bike. I usually go 60a rear, 42a front (in 2.5 flavour)

For slightly soft conditions (anything other than rocky courses) I’ve been having a lot of fun with Muddy Marys recently (2.3s though, big tyres)

At the Mega this year I rarely saw anything other than Big Bettys, Minions & Hi Rollers on the bike we were sharing the gondola’s with.
I used a super tacky 2.5 HR front & Michelin 2.2 soft DH24 rear, they were much better after a rain shower than in the dust bowl dryness earlier in the week.

Minions it may be then, might have to get slightly larger though.

Always been Minions DHF’s, and Wetscreams when its hideous.

Although with the ridiculous price increases over recent years and my stock dwindling, I’m going to go to something else.

Probably onto some Michelin’s Wild Grip R’s next as the price is a bit more sensible

When in doubt, Highrollers… They’re at least a little bit good at everything.

Normally I use SX Clutches though- I’m not hard on tyres so I don’t really need the strength of a full on dualply, the Clutch 2.3 is bigger than a 2.5 Highroller but much lighter, and faster, and more or less as grippy. Lasts better too.

And swampies for mud since I can’t be bothered cutting down spikes.

TBH the only one I’ve not liked was my 2.5 Nevegal… Just didn’t really work that well. And I love the 2.35 singleply Nevegal so that’s a bit weird.

I’m a Minion DHF fan but the Spesh offerings look good.

Minions for me too. 2.5″, dual-play UST.

I use 60a rather than Super-Tacky on the back though as the sticky one’s don’t last long.

I quite like my Spesh Clutch SX on the front, lighter and grippier than the 60a Minion DHF it replaced. Using a High Roller dual ply on the rear. Not sure whether it’s my riding style or what though but I find when you lean the bike into corners, if you go low enough both of these tyres lose grip from the centre knobs before hooking up on the outside knobs and that makes me panic. Are there any tyres that are similar but have a better transition between the centre and outer knobs?

The answer is always 2.5 dual ply hirollers.

Then the question must be ‘What are the heaviest tyres I can put on my bike’.

I like Swampies for the grip in the sticky stuff but last winter there were times when they drained the life out of me. Can’t bear to put them back on just yet.

Minion front on the front and high roller on the rear worked for me

Fat sticky Minions. But then I prefer grip to speed and don’t ride my DH bike when it’s proper wet.
