Cracked Specialized Enduro – what would you do?

I have a 2006 Specialized Enduro, which I thought was in good nick and sold it as such – but it turns out to have a crack in the chain stay weld.

The chap I sold it to is sending it back to me (which is fair enough), but now I need to decide whether to fix it (I have a quote for the new part) or try and sell it as is. What would you do??

Contact Specialized if you were the original purchaser they will probably give you a new frame

I’m not the original owner, so not a lot of chance of a new frame unfortunately.

Or if you were/are the orignal owner. take it back to the dealer (or contact Spec UK direct?) and talk to them. All Spez frames have a frame warrenty.

Late last year I spotted a crack on my 09 Epic, took it up to my LBS and I had a rebuilt bike on an ’11 frame returned to me less than a week later.

I had the same issue with the same frame.guy I sold it to was happy to wait til specialized had the part in stock again, which I paid for. If you need too resell I’d fix it first else you’ll IME lose more selling it broke than if it’s fully working-you’l find a smaller market of harder bargainers.maybe break for parts?

spesh warranty is legendery,take it to a spesh dealer my 5 year old enduro was replaced with a new frame 😀

Technically it is not covered by the warranty as it is a suspension part and covered for only one year under the Specialized warranty. But, Specialized often go way beyond the call of duty.

The chainstay in my Stumpjumper was cracked on the weld and Spesh were more than helpful (being the first owner though) and even replaced the main pivot which needed doing anyway.

I had the exact same fault on the same year frame. specialized replaced the chainstays under the warranty.

IS IT INSURED ? IF NOT, HOUSEHOLD INSURANCE MAY COVER IT IF ITS CRASH DAMAGE 😉 ALSO, ALU CAN BE WELDED….

Drop Spesh a line, tell them the frame is s/h, and you’ve got a crack. ask for their help. Generally they are very helpful.

I think this is a common problem on older (up to 2006) enduros. I’m guessing a new swing arm will be on its way to a Spesh dealer near you.

I remember taking my 2006 s-works Enduro to Les Gets in 2009 next to my mates new Nomad and other mates new Commecal Meta, the bike shop mechanic grabbed his mate nand his other mate to look at my old bike, moving the new ones out the way! 🙂

Be honest about it and give Spesh a call. They’ll probably offer you a replacement for half price at worst. Legendary CS.

I cracked three chainstays on my 2006 Enduro. In the end I also cracked the main frame and because I could prove I was the original owner, Spesh gave me a new 2011 frame (this was a few years ago). They were great frames but that join on the left hand side of the chainstays was a real problem. I even cracked the reinforced replacement one!

You should be able to buy a replacement chainstay; it dout it will be expensive but it won’t be the right colour.

The 2005/06 Enduro was an amazing bike, I’m sure that at the very least you’ll be able to source a new swingarm for it.

I know three people who’ve had replacement reinforced chainstays on their Enduros over the past 3/4 years. One of them broke it in Whistler – the LBS had the chainstays in stock as Specialized sent them a load because they were always breaking. I have one and I’m always checking THAT weld incase it’s gone.

are you sure? you got a 2011 frame in 2008/9?

If they have any left they will probably send one out.

My 04 went 1 year out of warranty, was only because they had run out that they didn’t send them to me for free.

Spesh count chain, seatstays and linkage as suspension parts, so it’s not a lifetime warranty on these parts. If there is a known issue however, they will normally sortit out even out of normal warranty..

If anyone has a 2012 camber/stumpy with the 142 rear axle, get your dealer to phone apesh about your ‘noisy freehub that keeps skipping’…thank me later!

I got it in June 2010 and it was a 2011 frame. It hadn’t been released yet, but it was what they were using for warranty replacements.

Regarding the one year warranty my chainstays were replaced in 2011 on a 2009 bike, with no quibbles. Although i did mention the small cracks had been there a year, but i forgot about them 😳 As suggested above they could not colour match the replacements though.

Just to update – I have ordered a new chainstay. They only come in black, but hopefully it’ll be here by early next week and the frame will be ready for sale again soon after. I have to fund the new bike purchase afterall.

Spesh replaced my 2006 S-Works chains stays in 2010. It was obviously out of warranty and they didn’t have any in stock, I had to wait 4 months for it but they have been redesigned and are symmetrical now instead of the original asymmetric ones which apparently had some weird forces going on, hence making them crack. My new one also came in black but was a good excuse for a respray (never did like the ano silver) still going today. Don’t know what to replace it with, it’s still does everything 🙂

My Pitch warranty says lifetime on main frame, 5 years on rear triangle. I would of thought that would be a standard across Speicialized (alu frames) TBH.

First time I’ve heard that the warranty on the rear triangle for Spesh frames is only five years versus lifetime. Not questioning it just surprised.
