This front hub is from a planet X 38mm tubular wheelset, around 10 years old.

Any idea if it is possible to convert to a thru axle? It looks a bit narrow – does anyone know who manufactured the hubs? Thanks

I’ve converted a QR hub to 12mm thru using some thin section bearings and a bit of lathe time to make the central spacer and adapters. The bearings are very small and not really up to the job. Even if you get that to work, the hub doesn’t seem to have a disc mount, and a thru axle fork won’t have mounts for rim brakes, so…

Thks Mowgli – it does actually have a disk mount on the other side, but I think the bearings would need to be pretty thin like you say. OTOH it would just be for occasional swapping in for cross racing so wouldn’t need to be durable (and all bearings get massacred in cross anyhow). But prob not worth the project.

I’d check to see what bearings you can get before jumping in. You don’t need an axle just the end caps so you’ll need to find some end caps (hope ones seem to be readily available) to determine the diameter of the insert bit that fits into the bearing. But you may need to machine them to fit a bearing.

I have bodged up an unbranded rear hub to take a hope pro 2 axle. It needed bespoke collar in the free hub, it works rather well
