    definitely not the BB and all the bolts are nice and tight so. . . . . should I strip and grease linkage, replace the shock bushes or bearings?

    What year is it? mine is a 2008 and the rear drop outs need greasing every now and then, but it could be the lower shock bush

    Has it had the uprated linkage, maybe they are on there way ‘out’.

    Or it could be that the creak is actually due to something else – I’d check everything, including whether the headtube is fully attached…

    I have a 2010 which started to do this on the second ride. Just a good clean without stripping down sorted it out. Still happens when I haven’t cleaned the bike properly. Stripping and greasing doesn’t make any difference for me so gets done every 2-3months.

    How old is the bike and how much use has it seen, also have you checked the shock bushes?

    brilliant thanks! sounds like a strip down and grease could be on the cards this weekend until then i’ll just take the iPod with me : ) its a 2010 btw and i’ve checked for the dreaded commencal cracks !

    I would check all of your frames bearings

    and also your shocks bushes if they haven’t been serviced recently

    Ok so looks like I am going to be your savior here 😉
    remove rear wheel, remove drop out. Clean and regrease drop out. Then put that all back together. Owing you have no play in the shock/linkage (unlikely) you can consider your problem to be solved 😉

    Meta 5 owner here.

    Before you commit to big strip – try the following (which cured my uncureable creak which was at it’s worst when climbing).

    Unscrew the plate that is derailler hanger. Cover with a smear of good teflon grease.

    5 mins max

    It did not however take five to work this out………

    Commencals bearings are quite useless, I would be checking them to be sure, the upper linkage bearings are easy enough to get into and check.

    The Trek in the video is 1 year old with hardly any use and a lot of the bearings were ruined, upto the rider though it’s their bike saddle time it effects.

    I had the same problem with my Meta, stripped & cleaned it, replaced all bearings. Started creaking again after about 20km, put some grease on the seat tube & it cured it.

    My meta made some horrendous noises before a bearing change.

    6802-2rs for the main pivot. I got some off eBay for about a fiver and it cured all the creaking.

    As I said try the mech hanger first. It is responsible for 95% of cracking on a commencal. And it’s by far the easiest thing to do. The creak will sound like it’s coming anywhere between the BB to the seat tube but IT IS coming from the drop out. Trust me 😉

    i had this on my meta i’d bent one of the pivot pins strip out and check for signs of rubbing

    Mainly with Meta’s it’s either the dropouts or seat clamps. If that doesn’t do it then it may be worth taking the hour glass shaped linkage apart to check there’s no metal to metal contact going on in there.

    BTW cracking really uncommon on 2010 & later meta’s. No more likely than with any other bike.

    Thanks for the replies, never expected to get 20 replies! I cleaned and lubed the pivot (ok I stayed them with WD40 ; ) and greased the drop outs and seat clamp and it seems to have cured it! The lack of play in the rear end (oh er) should have given it away
