What about a gimp suit, they’re popular with men of a certain age and I suspect your audience will relate too 🤣

I don’t get the no jeans thing. I am “only” 53 but I think I rock in 511s or even 513s. But that’s probably the problem, I think I rock. 🙂

My kids and wife agree though, but are they just being kind?

I see so many lazily / badly dressed men in jeans with the “Clarkson” look that it has totally put me off.  I last wore jeans in the 80s.

These posts appear at different times since STW became a thing , my forum name dates back to those times when we could get big group rides even a feature in the mag . My get up then was hoodies , skate shoes JEANS all with an MTB themed crossover ( if you know you know 😉)
Guess what? I’m now 67 , I’m not wearing elasticated waistband slacks and cardies with Werther’s stuffed in the pockets just a slight variation on the same theme and guess what I don’t care if people think I’m mutton dressed as who the f@@@ cares ! It’s true once you reach 60 you become invisible anyway so it really doesn’t matter .
I did get the Crocs thing wrong though , I ripped into a mate who started wearing them a few years ago and now they seem to have crossed the generations , yoofs wearing them saying they are soooo comfy ! 🙄🙄🙄

You’ve got quite the obsession with Clarkson. Given the oblong shape of his body, I think he looks a bit weird in anything he wears. I don’t tend to look at men, I will confess. But if I did, I don’t think Clarkson would spring to mind.

Extrapolating this to everyone of a certain age is a bit surprising. Some people of a certain age may look silly in jeans, some might not.

But even that is totally subjective anyway.

I think there is an awful lot of “protest to much” on this thread in reply to me 🙂

its given me more giggles than I have had for a while

    Who is protesting?

I see people trying to help, which is the entire point of your thread.

It may well be that you look horrific in jeans, and I am sorry to hear that 🙂

Do you have any women around you who could advise you? They are usually quite good at this stuff.

As for giggles, if that makes you laugh then I suppose it’s good news in a way but I find that rather sad if you rely on people helping you to create the most hilarity you’ve had for a while.

Two sources of hilarity – the deliberately funny posts some of which are hilarious and some of the inadvertently funny ones.

A few genuinely helpful ones as well which have been taken on board

It was obvious from my previous conversations on here that this would end up being pretty silly

This post from badlywired dog is brilliant and sums it up so well

In this week’s episode of Fashion Carnage TV, the denizens of an online cycling forum pool their ideas to spruce up TJ, a man ‘of a certain age’ who has recently emerged from the sale aisle of Mountain Warehouse, but is desperate for change.

TJ’s longstanding aversion to denim jeans makes him a tough proposition for a bunch of middle-aged wannabe fashionistas who wear little else and suggestions range from off-the-peg, Springsteen-style workwear through to made-to-measure Thai silk pajama suits via classic black leather jackets teamed with second-hand tartan trews.

Will TJ soar high like a majestic moleskin butterfly or stagger from the fitting room in ripped jeans teamed with a tweed sports jacket? Will he come to regret his unfathomable decision to seek fashion advice from a bunch of middle-aged cycling tramps? One thing’s certain, we can’t wait for the big reveal!!

You make this point a lot but Clarkson’s not the only person wearing any of the items of clothing he wears. Nothing he wears is a bad piece of clothing, He wears clothes badly – if there are people who look badly dressed wearing similar clothes its becuase they wear them badly too- it’s not the fault of the clothes. Its his whole schtick really – he’s the butt of his own joke things go wrong when he does them, things are supposed to look stupid when he does them, but its the him doing them thats point.

He wears socks – I presume you abstain from them too?

True. It is entirely possible that the key reason for that is that you’re the common denominator of said conversations.

I remember a fashion pundit on breakfast telly talking about this years ‘looks’ of the Glastonbury / festival season. I think it was all about Boyfriend Blazers and flowery wellies that year. The presenter then asked ‘well what about fashion advice for the men?”

“Well for the men the key thing to remember whatever it is you try to do you’ll just get it wrong.”

nickfrog – I wonder if we are in the “missed nuance” bit of text conversations?

I knew this would be funny, I overplay my hand for laughs, I knew i would also get a few nuggets of good advice on here amongst the piss taking

Of course he will. Nothing to do with the jeans though. 😁

In seriousness though TJ, consider that jeans perhaps aren’t the problem but rather the wrong jeans. The right cut for your racing-snake physique would look well I reckon. You might be onto something with Brant.

I appreciate that it can be challenging with current fashion though. The last time I went shopping for jeans they had all the shapes: slim fit, skinny fit, super-skinny fit, skin-tight, paint-on… I thought, what the hell, can’t hurt to at least try. I looked like I’d just escaped from Belsen.

We need some tech support for tj – we could do a live ‘try on’ and voting system…

Not sure about anyone else(TL:DR) but jeans no longer seem to fit that well. Almost like theyre cut too low at the waist.
Is this what happens with age 😕 do you suddenly start thinking trousers with a waist length that goes up to your belly button is the thing for comfort 😕

I’m 60 and pretty much live in jeans t-shirts and hoodies. If I want to smarten up a bit a check shirt does it for me.

Makes me feel a bit better… I’m 43 and out of most/all of my closest mates, I think I’m the one that looks like he’s still dressing as I was 30 years ago (jeans, Vans, hoody every day of the week without fail). Same with the check shirt thing too – went out the other night for a curry so dressed up. Jeans, Vans, check shirt (over a t-shirt that probably had some bike/car/skate/surf/outdoor type logo/branding).

I suspect I’ll be buried in a hoody.

tj – what are you wearing today for reference ? I recall a photo of you in a white collared shirt?

Right now?  A pair of expensive well fitting black outdoor trousers and a dark blue t shirt.  slobbing about the house day.

Last time I went out was in a pair of black trousers, maroon soft collared shirt and a lavender jumper 🙂
