trying to watch something on itv player on chromebook, and cast it to tv. for some reason it only does ‘chrome mirroring’ rather than proper casting.

i know what the difference is, and before i used to be able to hit the cast icon on toolbar, choose ‘cast to….’ and away we go, the app opens up and its a decent picture.

now tho, itll only mirror, so it doesnt open the app, it just shows exactly whats on the chromebook screen including web tabs at top etc. this wouldnt be a dealbreaker if the picture wasnt so sh1t. its blocky and jumpy, poor quality when mirrored.

any idea what im doing wrong? how can i get the chromecast to ‘cast’ rather than ‘mirror’?

    thanks

Is the ITV player app on the chromebook the latest version ?

that just got me thinking neal, its not an app, its the itv hub on a webpage, that should cast. so….. i looked for an itv player app instead, found it, but it only seems to want to play live itv, i cant find the catch-up stuff.

never needed a standalone app before tho, been able to access iplayer, 4OD, itv etc through the web tabs.

is it live or catch up? itv player catch up is enabled to cast, live TV itv isn’t, for some reason, well, not on my phone it isn’t.

Another annoyance since moving from Win Phone back to Android is it seems modern Android doesn’t do miracast any more. I believe that’s what Windows uses and I’ve been able to play a video on the phone, tablet or desktop Windows and sling it to my Samsung TV without any apps or gadgets plugged into the TV.

Now it seems I have to buy a gadget and use apps. Or screw that and use my Windows tablet to do the same job.

catch-up. opens the itv player in the browser but doesnt ‘cast’ like it does youtube etc, it only mirrors the screen so you cant browse other pages (not that you want to if youre watching something). but like i say, the dealbreaker is the quality, mirroring the screen is shocking.

As far as I’m aware all programming put out for catch up can be cast, altho itvplayer is very flakey i had lots of problems during the Vuelta. Only thing that I can suggest then is say what programme it is and someone on here will test it on their device (not me, I’m not near a telly).

Are other things like bbc iplayer, behaving the same (i.e not working)? then there are two possible options 1. your chromecast has dropped it’s internet connection, or 2. your laptop has connected directly to the chromecast via wifi, not your router.

If iplayer and such like are working as expected, then the most likely reason is that ITVplayer itself is throwing a wobbly.

As i have mentioned before here, the chromecast actually tries to grab a stream direct from the service. when you click the button, if there is not a cast available stream, then it then will try and cast the webpage.

pro tip, turn everything on and off again, including your router.

What are you trying to cast *to*? How is the device connected to the telly?

I’ve got a 1st gen Chromecast, I find that it occasionally needs rebooting (unplug the USB for a couple of seconds).

ok, missus was trying to watch ‘Liar’ through the itvplayer hub on her chromebook, so in effect the chrome browser.

i was experimenting with youtube and if i open that in chrome the same way, click ‘cast, i have the option of my chromecast (2nd gen, connected directly into tv hdmi), but rather than select it there, if i hit the down arrow instead it gives the option of my chromecast or youtube. so i hit youtube, it casts the app properly, happy days.

itv player, it doesnt give the option of ‘itvplayer’ alongside the chromecast, just the chromecast, hit that and its mirroring/sh1t quality.

im just up nice and early now for holiday in greece for a week, so wont be able to experiment more til i get back but ill be watching with interest still if you have any ideas.

    thanks a lot

Have you restarted the Chromecast? If there are updates they don’t get installed without a restart iirc. Sounds like the itv player in the Chromecast itself needs an update. Of course if there is one or not remains to be seen…
