Chavs broken my windows…. can you fix double glazing

if people (everybody, any colour, race, age etc) just got on with their lives without fretting over the latest terminology and remembered that ‘sticks and stones’ then the world would be a far better place.
I’m not fretting over terminology – I just think there is a lot of snobbery at play, here and in society in general, and it’s not healthy/positive. Terms like ‘chav’ feed into it.
And saying that ‘chavviness’ is not related to wealth is a bit of a red herring, it’s more just that wealth/class don’t necessarily directly correlate.
hard to quantify but on meeting somebody you knew when they were a bit ‘Chavvy’ regardless of wealth.
You mean you consider their clothing to be gaudy and unfashionable, and they speak with a strong regional accent, with ostentatious displays of jewellery or cars that you consider tasteless perhaps? i.e. they are rich but still low-class in your eyes?
sometimes at school we used the term ‘pikey’ but this seems exclusive to the travelling community now, circa ’93 in the south it simply meant someone who was a bit skanky, a bit of a dick….pikey, chav, who cares?….
RIghty-ho, so a derogatory term for scummy, tasteless people you don’t like is interchangeable with a derogatory term for gypsies/travellers – and you don’t see any problem?
I’m not exactly that holier-than-thou about it – I’ve used these words from time to time in the past. I just think it’s something that should probably be generally avoided, or at the very least thought about a bit. Seems that’s a struggle for some on here though.
And mikewsmith – do you ever STFU about Apple products? You honestly seem obsessed.
mikewsmithFree MemberAnd mikewsmith – do you ever STFU about Apple products? You honestly seem obsessed.
Lol there was actually a funny line in amongst all this Sh** that is getting spouted – I attempted to read a thread that ended up as a classic mud flinger and got bored so added a throw away line as a response to a joke 1 page back (probably the last meaningful comment)
I was mostly more annoyed that one of the Guardian links had a americaniZed Z in it.
For the record I will try and find a way to tag some lines as JOKE for those that are a little to into their own ranting to get that. 🙂 (JOKE)
grumFree MemberIt may have been a JOKE, but the funniest part is the way you have managed to vent your Apple-hating obsession on a completely unrelated thread (even if it was a JOKE). 🙂
CougarFull MemberReally? Never ever?
Sorry. “Which isn’t necessarily the case.”
And those who dress/speak in a similar fashion but aren’t actually guilty of anti-social behaviour never get lumped in together with those who do?
By the ignorant, sure.
TBH, the whole “youth of today” thing is a way broader issue than simple terminology. Whether we refer to them them chavs, young adults, hoodies, or the future of mankind, we’ve still spent the last decade or two telling them all directly and indirectly that they’re worthless shithouses.
Try reading this definition again
There’s plenty of definitions. Far as I’m concerned, the derogatory term applies when actions deserve it. Cf. not all travellers are pikeys, but if I were to disturb one in the act of removing the radio from my car then I’d feel justified in applying the moniker. (IIRC, the Romany definition means ‘not one of us’ anyway, or something similar).
Ultimately, if you’re a criminal scumbag, the words used to describe you are a lesser issue than the fact you’re a criminal scumbag.
Words are funny things, aren’t they? Just a jumble of letters. Yet we have filters on the forum in place to stop them landing in certain orders, lest people take offence.

Expecting a Thatcher reference shortly and one possibly something around turning bikes over.
Get some sleep.
KevevsFree Memberbandying around the word “chav” as a derogatory insult from your oh so high horse is just rubbish, makes you look a bit thick and just one step removed from the thing you think you are deriding. stinks of insecurity to me. It’s just “them” from the other side of town. Get a life and talk to other human beings!
bwaarpFree MemberYep…especially when they’re as funny or pedantic as this, last time it happened was a few years ago with regard to a “picolax” thread, before that it was the “badger” thread, now you have joined the greats, forever known as the “chav” thread , i guess it’s almost as bad as folk trying to argue or get a point across on a web forum when for all intents and purposes they could be talking to a fat mama bear sitting naked in front of a multiple monitor set-up with sweat stains dribbling down her thighs onto the floor whilst getting off over a webcam feed bout intensive dairy farming.
I laughed so hard after reading that I thought I was going into seizures. Thanks. 😆
deviantFree MemberIs it ok to refer to these people as ‘undesirables’….?
….no socio-economic group specified, just the obvious suggestion that the people who broke the OP’s windows are best avoided.
I could retch at how PC that just sounded.
KevevsFree Memberdeviant just call them “These people” it’ll make you feel better. you can gather them into a group of badness, nastiness or poorness labelled “these people” and put all sorts of wayward deviancy upon their heads. When someone trips up a granny or punches a dog, you can then blame “these people” and point at the little gathering of “these people” over there that you have no association with, then “these people” will be all over the gutter press and daily mail, next thing “these people” will be all derided in STW forum. Then they’ll need a new name. It’s easier to group and label people. That’s how it goes..
deviantFree MemberI like that suggestion, no (obvious) prejudice implied so to speak….can i also refer to them as ‘you people’ if i have to address them face to face?….although trying to understand what they are saying is quite tricky as most of the time it appears they are performing a very bad Ali-G impersonation.
Now all we need is a (final) solution for what to do with these people.
MantasticFree MemberBring back hanging I say. Chav’s need to be controlled and crushed from uprising against us. Get the military onto the streets to control these buffoons.
Failing that, get window mended, ignore the tools on here and put it all down to experience.
rudebwoyFree Memberso the militant ignoramuses have to use language as they see fit, the rest of us have to accept prejudice and snobbery as part of life, and the tory conference cheers in the background.
Middle class reserve right to sneer……
JamieFree MemberRight. Just to recap. On a thread about some poor guy getting his windows smashed by
chavspikeysmiddle class Chinese women with Prada handbagspersons unknown, we have covered:Social housing
Demonisation of the youth
Apple products (cheers Mike)
STW’ers ring each other to talk about this shit
Using bold and CAPITALS really nails home your point
Words can mean different things to different people, and this makes different people angry
Class warfare is alive and well, both real and perceived, and healthily flowing in both directions
Disagreeing with someone automatically puts you diametrically opposite to there moral and political standpoint.
There is no middle ground.Edit:
Just needed your input now Jamie and that will complete it …….
I would love to oblige, but that isn’t really something covered in the thread, is it? If I was doing a list of STW forum tropes, then you would be bang on.

A BJ first thing, how lucky .
thegeneralistFree MemberMIKE CONNER And considering the Op did not actually see the people who smashed his windows, I’d guess that he is not using the term ‘chav’ to describe the way they looked. He appears to be assuming they were members of a particular social group.
Oh for Pete’s sake. He’s calling them chavs because they broke his window. The person who broke the window is a chav because he broke the window. Not for any other reason.
Or are you trolling?
oliverd1981Free MemberYoung people in this country are massively demonised, especially those that wear tracksuits and don’t talk proper. If people weren’t all so scared/prejudiced they might find some of them are actually nice folk.
If they we’re really nice they’d get some proper clothes and learn to talk using real words. There really is nothing in the way.
Until then they can just **** off. – Charvers.
And what other social groups go round at night breaking windows? (teeters on brink of invoking Godwins)

rudebwoyFree Memberinformative this type of thread, what may seem an innocuous turn of speech, has developed into exposing all those hidden fears, prejudices in some people, incomprehension in others and some enlightened and progressive points from those that understand the bigger picture.
So one small ‘word’ can be very significant, depending on context, as ever.
davidjones15Free Memberinformative this type of thread, what may seem an innocuous turn of speech, has developed into exposing all those hidden fears, prejudices in some people, incomprehension in others and some enlightened and progressive points from those that understand the bigger picture.
And a touch of bigotry on both sides.

Wow. Well I suppose at least you’re upfront about your prejudice, unlike some in this thread. 😕
oliverd1981Free Memberwhat may seem an innocuous turn of speech, has developed into exposing all those hidden fears, prejudices in some people, incomprehension in others and some enlightened and progressive points from those that understand the bigger picture.
So it’s okay for whole sectors of the population to be against education, social advancement, and generally respecting the rule of law and not call them on it?
DezBFree MemberI wanted to have some fun on this thread, but it was
Closed when I got here.DezBFree MemberChavs?
Honestly, I think it’s the people who don’t know what chavs are who object to the term. It simply must be.grumFree MemberAnyone who doesn’t dress well enough and has a too strong regional accent apparently.
I know full well ‘what chavs are’ and there’s really no denying its a term used to denigrate large swathes of society, many of whom have done nothing wrong. There’s pretty clear evidence of that in this thread alone.
I regularly work with lots of young people who many on here would snootily dismiss as scummy chavs, and many of them are fundamentally nice, funny people, who often come from poor/difficult backgrounds and perhaps were never taught the same social conventions we were. Yes sometimes they can do my head in but the middle-class kids I work with can be at least as badly behaved, in different ways.
EwanFree MemberI know full well ‘what chavs are’ and there’s really no denying its a term used to denigrate large swathes of society, many of whom have done nothing wrong.
But the specific people we’re talking about on this thread did do something wrong! They broke my windows 😡
rudebwoyFree Memberit just keeps giving, in my life most things have layers of complexity, shades and nuances– how sweet to be an idiot it must be sometimes
DezBFree Memberhow sweet to be an idiot it must be sometimes
Personally, I love it.grumFree MemberBut the specific people we’re talking about on this thread did do something wrong! They broke my windows
You aren’t talking about specific people though because you don’t know who did it.
My middle-aged ex-next door neighbour (when I lived at my mum’s) who lives in a 17th century banqueting hall once deliberately smashed a car headlight, then spread the glass out in the car park, and tried to blame my brother after various disputes over parking. It only came to light because another neighbour saw it happen. She was about as far from a chav as you can imagine.
Round here lots of car mirrors get smashed. The perpetrators are almost always students.
rudebwoyFree MemberEWan- but who broke your windows? you don’t know i take it, it could have been some youths who are not in employment,it could have been some bullingdon style folk, it could have been a random nutter, without seeing the impact/damage- DG does break due to stress occasionally, it could have been any number of scenarios, but you chose to use a derogatory label for certain sector of society– and the result has been far more enlightening than a broken window….
davidjones15Free MemberShe was about as far from a chav as you can imagine.
Sounds more like one of those Bullingdon Club pillocks.
DezBFree Memberand the result has been far more enlightening than a broken window….
For who?
EwanFree MemberLol at this thread.
Chucking stones at windows is a fairly chavvy thing to do, ergo those who did it are chavs. Clear?
slownormFree MemberSome horrible c**t has smashed my windows would have been a much less contentious title 🙄
oliverd1981Free MemberYou aren’t talking about specific people
Just beacause he doesn’t know who they are doesn’t mean that the act wasn’t perpetrated by certain individuals. And he can call them what he likes – especially if it’s derogatory.
As nobody will identify as being a chav when questioned then the word isn’t specifically offensive to anybody. If any chavs want to lodge a complaint, they can go seek legal advice, although the best advice is to burn your tracksuit.
