Hello, have a little kangoo van, when I start the car I get a short 1second ‘quack’ type noise from the engine bay…its a bit odd, any ideas please?

Never heard it until I recently had belts etc changed?

    Is it a duck?

you’d have to be quackers to think that.

[edit] too late with the quackers joke.

Have you tried feathering the throttle?

I fear it could result in a hefty bill.

I see thank you! Easy to fix or replace starter motor?
Guessing it will eventually knacker the starter?

Common problem with these. I fear your goose is cooked.

problem you’ll have is that the teeth on the flywheel may get damaged if you don;t get the starter sorted – and then it’ll get expensive to fix.

Is it the Platypus valve? Hefty bill if you cant duck it.

If it’s a dead duck, the noise problem is fixed?

    Unless it’s a ….ghost duck….

Could also be a slipping belt now that the weather is a bit colder.

However, it is French, so you may as well get used to it making funny noises.

If it’s the starter it could mean a big bill, so you won’t be able to swan around in your van. If it’s French, does it it quack in pidgin English?

Before the engine fires? Fuel pump.

After engine fires? Starter. Take the starter off and lube it, so that it retracts properly. You can get gunge build-up. That sorts it 90% of the time. WD40 or GT85 to free it, then the lightest oil you have kicking about (chain lube works great).

Can I just say “sticky bendix” please – on-topicish, and one of my favourite phrases from mini-owning days

Try starting engine with clutch down then with clutch up; release bearing?
Or EGR valve opening and closing;servo vacuum loss? try pinching the hose to the EGR and see if it stops.

More than likely a loose drive belt. Give em a spray with WD40 and if noise goes away either tension or replace. It will have a pre engaged starter so need sticky bendix available.

Sounds like it could be a quack in the windscreen.
