Can you replace Shimano hub cups?

One of our bikes has old cheap Shimano cup-and-cone hubs and after a strict regime of very rare services the wheel doesn’t sound happy. I stripped it last night to and as expected the bearings are shot but the cup on one side is knackered too (I suspect this is from my last shoddy service and I didn’t tighten it up enough).

I’m guessing the answer is no, but is it possible to replace parts of a Shimano hub or does this mean buying a new hub and relacing the wheel?

i think it can be done, using the parts from a donor hub.

the tricky bit is removing the cups: something like a slide hammer + expanding collet is probably the way to go…

(i have known cups to simply fall out, but really don’t hold your breath that it’ll be this easy)

Yeah, I’ve done it with an older hub and it was donor hub + massive hammer. (it’d be easy with a press I’m sure) Coming from a motorbike spannering background it felt fine and sensible, I suspect anyone who’s come from a pushbike spannering background will think it’s insane 😆

I guess the question is, is it worth it? 🙂

Pretty sure cynic-al has done this in the past…..

Done it loads with M475 / M525 hubs, saves rebuilding the whole wheel, just use a donor hub and transfer the lot over, axle / cones / freehub / bearings … cups drift out and press in no probs.
