I clouted my leg with a bit of bike while hitting the planet after an ill judged jump stunt last Thursday. This resulted in a very painful small dent and bruise beneath my knee and a couple of scrapes below that. I didn’t think much beyond “Ouch” at the time.

5 days later and the bruise is still very painful to touch and the dent is still there even though the discolouration of the bruise is mostly faded – there is a little yellowing extending about half the way down the shin. The flesh immediately around the dent and extending about 3 inches to the left is quite numb to touch unless I press a little harder when it is very sore.

It has been a while since I have had a bike bite but don’t remember them feeling like this. Is this normal healing?

That’s a bruised bone, takes a few weeks to heal and is painful for quite a while. Just been through it myself and it’s not pleasant. The pain has gone for me now but the bruise is still visible.

My shin bones are plastered in dents to such an extent my physio initially thought I had osteomalacia as the depressions are noticeable by sight alone and if you run your fingers over them they feel like an old fashioned washboard.

Cool. Thanks, it is just most advice is compare the painful leg to the other leg to see if it looks normal and , well, my other leg is even more screwed so it doesn’t really help.

Somafunk – I have just run my finger down my shins for the first time in my life. Are you saying that they are not meant to feel corrugated then?

The Inuits made maps of their coastlines by carving the relative shapes and sizes of bays and inlets and inlets into a piece of bone or wood. Didn’t matter if you went from, say, general NE facing to general SE facing as you moved around the coastline, you were just tracking the bays and promontories – you can do that on a straight bit of stick or bone, even up one side and down the other.

I wonder what coastlines my shins most closely represent.

Some years ago I was on a building site, looking for the site manager, spotted him, and half jogged over to him as I needed some paperwork signing so I could get to the next job.
Someone had left a forklift with the forks partially up. I wasn’t looking properly.
That left a dent on my shin.

It’s all relative, I imagine the majority of keen mtb’rs have corrugated shins to some extent over the general population but WCA levels of corrugation will, given your other injuries, differ greatly in comparison.

Yes i have a dented skull… caused by a post knocker “incident” and a dented knee cap caused by a KTM 125 “incident”

Aero, innit. Like a golf ball. My right shin is more corrugated than my left

    post knocker “incident”

I saw so many of these BITD when putting up MX tracks.

    **** things are lethal.
Catch the top edge of the post and smash it straight into your head.
Should have made people wear helmets while using them. 😂

I’ve got a post knocker dent and scar too in my forehead, kept my safety bobble hat on and drove to the doctor, queued at reception then the adjoining pharmacist saw me, lifted my hat and said “bloody hell”!

I’ve got a dent on my head through standing up underneath the forks of an FLT. Nearly knocked me out. Just what you need when you are bald… :0/

I did similar at uni, but was running between two parked cars. Tow bars don’t give way much….

This is why I always remove my towbar when not using it…

I’ve still got dents in my shins which i think are from the planet x ‘bear trap’ pedals I bought at bike ’98. Lethal things they were!
