    My broadband connection is causing me trouble downloading. It is taking a long time to download a website and anything involving video is taking for ever. Yet when I run a broadband speedchecker I am showing on average a speed of 4 meg.

    I have tried 3 different speedcheckers and they all show roughly the same speed is there any way of checking my broadband quality not just the speed.

    My isp is plusnet with a 14 gig download limit which I am no where near reaching at the moment. I am running Norton 360 protection.

    Try disabling it then try downloading the same video.

    Drac thanks for the reply sorry I didnt word my original post properly edited it now.

    Its not just video thats causing a problem its everything for example checked the bbc site for a weather forecast about 20 minutes a go and it took nearly a minute to download the homepage. Ran speedchecker straight away and I got 4.7 meg.

    I havent tried turning off Norton wouldnt that be a bit dangerous?

    not as dangerous as running Norton. Ditch it and get Avast. I had norton years ago and it slowly ground my PC to a standstill.

    Why would Norton suddenly cause my broadband to run slow. I have had broadband for nearly 5 years using Norton all that time and have never had a problem.

    if you’re getting 4.7 meg BB I suggest that your broadband is not slow, its your system. As i said I ditched Norton because of the same problems.

    I only get 1-1.5meg an my download is quick enough. have you scanned your system for spyware etc? try using superantispyware[/url] see what it finds.

    No if you stick to safe sites and don’t download or open anything dodgy whilst it’s disabled.

    Possibly phone your ISP and just ask if they are working on your line.

    Just tried internet with firewall switched off didnt make any difference

    Ran Superantispyware free version no threats detected

    Anyone know if it is possible to run a quality test ( i dont mean a speed test ) to see if there is any noise on the line

    It won’t it’s the anti-virus you need to switch off.

    If your on a BT line there’s a test on there site for testing your line, however if it was that then it be crap on the speedtest too.

    Drac is right. If it was noise on the line then you would get slow speeds. That’s how the ADSL speed negotiation works. I also recommend trying it with norton completely off.

    Delete your temporary internet files. If you’ve never done this before, there will be about 10,000,000,000,000 Gb of them, which slows your machine down no end.

    Then go to http://www.pcpitstop.com and run their free tests – results come back with a bunch of easy-to-follow advice on speeding up your PC.

    Ok, as said before delete temp internet files. Go to adobe.com and install latest flash player. Go to java.com and download the latest java version. Do windows update and make sure you are up to date. If it is still slow on some sites it could possibly be your MTU size. You’ll have to google how to change this as you may have to do it on your pc and/or router. Plusnet traffic shape (throttle) so check it at different times of day to eliminate that. Whether it makes any difference to this problem or not the best thing you can do is download norton removal tool and run it. Stick on AVG, Avast or even pay for f-prot or Kaspersky. Norton is worse than half the virii it supposedly protects you from!

    Who is your ISP?

    I’m with AOL and they “throttle” connections now and again, e.g. block P2P ports, BBC Iplayer etc and HTTP downloads. I can browse the net fine, but can’t download BBC Iplayer files at any speed as they are restricting P2P traffic. Even when I download files from certain websites (e.g. java.com the other week) I get pathetic speeds then on other sites I get my full 1.8mb. They have been doing it to me a lot lately.

    I’m moving to Sky next week.

    Yup, I’d guess at throttling. They wont throttle the ports usually used for speed checkers though, of course. Try using thinkbroadband.com and tick the “port 80” box on the tester, this’ll highlight any throttling they’re doing on the web port.

    pantsonfire – you are being given good advice that in 99% of cases will instantly solve the problem, yet you refuse to try it and continue asking for help. Turn off Norton for 10 minutes. Your computer won’t explode. Lots of Windows machines run absolutely fine without any protection at all.

    Right so far I have tried the following
    deleted temp files,
    down loaded and run twice a registry cleaner,
    deleted Norton,
    downloaded and run twice superantispyware free version, downloaded and run twice AVG free version,
    Adobe, Windows and Java are up to date,
    Tried 4 different speedcheckers with all the different settings they offer and all show similar speeds,

    Finally I have just spoken to a very nice BT engineer who told me broadband speedcheckers are about as much use as a chocolate teapot they are basically random number generators. He is coming to test my line today and is going to give me a new filter just in case thats the problem

    I am having some problems at the moment as well. Apparently sometimes the bits in the prime BT connector socket can cause a problem. Was told to check this by undoing the two screws on the front of the BT socket (must be the first point of entry to the property) to release the bottom part. Then plug your filter directly into the socket behind

    fair enough, its only to register your ADSL package though, this means you would be able to compare your speed with others in your postcode when available.

    NOT for any other reason (no useful data for other purposes is collected)

    It’s not that I’m afraid of my details being shared I just don’t want to register when I can use other sites that don’t require that.

    Touching wood as I type this BT fella came and apparently did something to our BT socket YES!!!! RESULT we now have broadband download speeds again
