I saw the bionicon chain device and thought – **** it – cut an only grip in to a 1 inch length, stuck a cable tie through the middle so it made a loop, then fed chain through it and cable tied it to my frame!

Cost £0

Effectiveness – Fricking Awesome

Saving – £40 plus the occasional effort of putting chain back on and the horrible slapping noise gone completely.

I thank you!

Nice bodging, does the rubber grip allow the chain to slide nicely without any unwanted drag, maybe an old lock on grip with a plastic inner or even a bit of scrap polypropylene pipe with a suitable I.D. would improve performance further?

The grip was a clarkes £5 lock on – cut right in the middle, there is no friction at all on it what so ever, to the point I forgot it was there this morning on a ride.

Also, the fact that the outside is rubber – when in granni gear, the grip will run against the tyre but it just rotates around instead of rubbing!

Mine looks rubbish cos it was a quick bodge but could be done very nicely indeed and it honestly works a treat!

No noise no friction!

NO COST!!

You need to host it somewhere, yep. If you haven’t got anywhere, mail it to me and I’ll stick it up for you.

That actually looks pretty cool.

Awseone cheers real man – yeah needs tidying up but only had red short cable ties – with black ones and cutting the grip with something other than a kitchen knife it would actually be pretty damn sweet!

Thought I’d give it a whirl,

Chain retention singletrackworld style… by sam2442, on Flickr

I used a piece of small diameter plumbing pipe and a large keyring as I didn’t have any used lock-ons hanging around and I’m suffering from a black zip-tie drought at the moment.
Only had time for a quick trip round the block, but it seems to reduce slap while airing speed humps…

My father in law has a long piece of plastic tubing doing the same thing on his recumbent.

I did something similar a few months back with some very thick rubber tubing. Tried it with an inner tube but it breaks through very quick.

Perpetual motion machine – hmmm nice work people – sorry not old enough to remember Dave’s Chain Device! No offence!

Saw a pic somewhere of a guy who’d used a bit of hosepipe to run the chain through.

I like the grip idea better though.
