Am I the only person who found them completely un-funny.
Stop-Carry on
Slim shady the squirrel
etc.
Even Scott Mills made me laugh, Greg James on the other hand is a bit rubbish with a handfull of not very good ideas nicked form other shows done badly.
My daughters maths teacher is called Mr Protheroe. Always makes me smile – he looks about 20 so I didn’t bother explaining why I kept grinning at memories of Protheroe the ghost at parents evening.
Loved them to bits and the day they left R1 was the day the station effectively died.
this. very possibly the finest radio show ive ever heard. closely followed by radcliffe and maconie on radio2. havent listened to radio2 in the evening since they were dropped for the witless moron that is jo whiley.
M+L were IMHO, the funniest thing ever on Radio 1. Ive got a few Fat Harry White clips on my compo, must have another listen cos they still crack me up. Some of the stuff they got away with was amazing.
Loved M+L on R1, I was often late to work when they were on on a morning. I’d get there on time, but would sit in the car in the carpark till they finished 😉
Liked R+M on an evening on R2 but rarely listen to them on 6m. I listen to 6m a lot, but I get no work done if they’re on 🙂
I’m clearly more professional now than I was 12-15 years ago!
“”You will be spied on by a coal man from Cleckheaton, who will inadvertently empty his sack up your back passage”
Best Fat Harry line EVER”
Oh i don’t know,
I seem to remember something about a old boiler in the corner of the bath room with a gushing crack!
It was a job for Tony the plumber!
Binners I remember all of us being in the car once (probably on our way to glasto or something) and being really confused why my dad was literally crying with laughter about someones back passage.
Loved ’em but somehow (wonder if this is also reflected in the non-likers above*) our friends south of the Watford gap really did not connect with them at all?
* wholly appreciate that personal taste comes into it – for example, i could never, ever, tire of slapping Frankie Boyle, some folk here will, of course find him hilarious…. but i do recall, in our circle of friends, a distinct southern bias to those who did not gel with M+L…
For all the BBC’s attempts to have funny acts on during the afternoon (Steve Wright…), M&L were the best. But what made them great is the Radcliffe is a superb DJ and Riley was a bassist in The Fall).
And, of course, they both remain inestimable on their separate shows on 6Music. Most evenings I cook dinner with Marc (with a C, one L) Riley.
Liked them when they were on in the evening, but hated them when they moved to the morning slot.Even Radcliffe said their show didn’t work in the morning, don’t think it was helped by the fact he had to play sh1te mainstream music either…….
Last time this came up, someone posted a link to a website that had a ton of thier material on it, including many of the tunes from that Antique vinyl skit.
I agree, some of the stuff could get a bit old, but in general (I am Scot, and not all Scots liked them) I found them utterly fabulous. Brilliant.
When i went to that link last time me and the missus spent a good 30 minutes with tears pouring down our faces. Fabulous.
cannot express how funny these guys are, t’was a travesty when they stopped em for that colin n edith pish. Raddcliffe n maconie was nearly there but not quite, still a million times better than that wittering bint jo whiley tho.
