Best on-boot bike rack – still Saris Bones?

Towbar and roof rack not an option for my new car so need somethingthat attaches to the boot.

Anything bettter than Saris?

Boot (saloon) or Hatchback? If the latter and for one bike…

P.s Also used to have a Saris Bones 2. Liked it – nice and sturdy, seemed stable enough on the car. Having the wheels sticking out either side of the car (was a Mini) was a little disconcerting, but you get used to it (like any other sideways mounting bike rack).

Slight issue that I didn’t like was you had to be careful with the (lower) rubber feet. Everything had to be nice and clean, otherwise you’d end up with some very fine scratching. Managed to get it out with T-Cut on the boot – but when I rested it on the bumper (shiny colour matching plastic), it was harder to buff out (at home, anyway).

It was relatively compact – though sold it on as didn’t have much space in the flat we were living in.

I didn’t like putting an on boot carrier on an old car, let alone a new one!

I’d definitely be looking at alternatives like a seasuccker etc

THanks for the advice. The issue with the seasucker is the car is a Nissan Leaf so having a baig sail on top of the car is probably going to destroy the range. Having the sail on the back less so.

So that would be the Hornet then 😉

Ha – lol. Fair enough. Not sure if I’ve seen a Seasucker that does 2 bikes the same way as the Hornet – Think 2+ bikes are all roof mount.

Bones should be dandy – once it’s set up (strap lengths and whatnot), it’s reasonably quick to put up, and I always found it secure. Just watch the feet…

If your interested I’ve got a saris bones 3 carrier in grey that I keep meaning to post up for sale.

@Stevious The Nissan Leaf is blessed with only one option and that is a roof rack.  Even then it can only take 70Kg I think.

The tailgate spoiler on a leaf is a big plastic affair and the strapon racks need to get to the top edge with a direct line. The load on the spoiler will bend the spoiler, take off the paint, and worst of all allow the rack and bikes to bounce.  Bouncing is not good!

The sucking type cannot be relied upon.  If you use these , then please add a cable through your windows. You are responsible for a safe load.

My feedback on the Saris Bones 2:

-It’s versatile, in that it fits both my estate car and MrsCB200’s small hatchback.

– It holds the bikes securely

– It goes on pretty easily

– If you are anal about paintwork, it’s not great; the hooks brush and tap against the car when installing, and the feeling of metal on metal is unsettling. Saying that, there’s no visable damage to either car.

– Make sure you turn off automatic rear wiper, as it will jam against the upper foot

– You can’t lock it to the car, so you can’t leave it unsupervised and relax.

Overall, I use the Thule 591s when possible, but the Saris makes an invaluable extra/backup carrier.
