Best 'comeback' albums

You know the ones. Bands who haven't done anything for yonks, then come back with something absolutely belting. Its a rare feat to pull off.

Just listening to the new OMD stuff. A return to cracking form after a 14 year gap. The only other band I can think of that have done it successfully were Echo and the Bunnymen

TBH I cant really think of any great come back albums but I can think of a couple of bad ones

Stone Roses Second coming…very dissapointing
Janes Addiction, Strays…mediocre

Well they didn't actually stop making albums, but Iron Maiden's output after 1988's "Seventh Son" was total carp until Dickinson's return for "Brave New World" in 2000, although I really think they got rolling again with 2003's "Dance of Death".

Gil Scot Heron's new album… it is a miracle that it was even made if you know the man's history!

Second Coming is a great album – not like the first one admitedly but some great tracks on it

The Divine Comedy – Victory for the Comic Muse. A screaming return to the glory days.

The follow-on album (Bang goes the Knighthood) is even better.

Begging You was a cracking track. I remember buying it as soon as it came out and listening to it over and over with my mates and a few beers. Would have been winter 1994 I reckon…

AC/DC – Back In Black

I liked Perfect Strangers, it was Deep Purple's comeback album with the early 70's line up
Sabbath's Heaven and Hell was also rather good when Ronnie replaced Ozzy

Sort of agree about Iron Maiden although I am one of the few it seems that enjoyed Fear Of The Dark
Poor production though and the last album Martin Birch produced before retiring. Not one to be remembered for after all the great albums he had such a big hand in

Television 'Television'

Maybe not comeback albums but some of De La Soul's later releases are excellent and largely ignored, particularly 'Stakes Is High'.

The Verve – Urban Hymns, was a massively successful comeback album.

Call me a heathen if you like, but I really like Chinese Democracy…

Also, Europe's latest album is superb, as is the new Skynnrd album.

Not sure if its a comeback (5 years since previous release) but Death Magnetic is the best thing metallica have done since 1991's Black album!

Chinese democracy is possibly the best GnR album IMO – I really like it and have always been a fan. Just got tickets to see them in the autumn – my 5th time seeing them live I think.

Just my opinion. Appetite possibly edges it, and some stand-out tracks on other albums, but I like the slightly deconstructed sound that is a departure for them.

Chinese Democracy is NOT a GnR album, it is an Axl Rose solo project.

It says GnR on the sleeve…

It's absolute shite in my opinion. It doesn't even come close to AFD.

AFD is great, no doubt, and I know CD isn't as mainstream rock but it doesn't mean my opinion is wrong! I really like it but I know I am in a minority.

There are some good tunes in there, lost in the mix. Some verses and choruses I'd swear are from different songs – 'There Was a Time' for example.

Some of the solos are incredibly bad – he needs to dig out Slash's phone number!

Anyway – glad you like it; it's my loss that I just don't.

I like the track "Better" but can't get into the rest at all. And I really dislike the lead playing on the album. Too much random noise and widdling for me.

anything after "Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide" was starting to get disappointing from a GnR perspective. appetite had some good tracks on it but they were already starting to get too safe and tame. (still got the robot rape cover LP :D)
