Who remembers Ultrasound? Two albums and then nothing. ‘Stay Young’ was/is a great single.

    Elastica and Kingmaker.

    Temporary indie superstars.

Ultrasound got back together for the Tim Smith (the cardiacs) gig and then released a new album. They are working on some more news songs and the occasional gig.

Moving slightly away from the charts…

Trapt were all over MTV just as Nu Metal was dying as were…
    Taproot
    Hed (PE)
Papa Roach (arguably one good album and lots of filler after that)

Warrant (again at the of of the hair metal reign)

Guess there will be loads of bands who were huge for an album or two but then vanished as the skate punk ‘thing’ dired up.

Bowling for Soup are arguably only known for a handful of singles / funny vids.

I can’t think of too many others than New Found Glory (although still going I can only really think of one album).

How about “Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction” and “Sigue Sigue Sputnik”?

Definitely! I was thinking of adding Zodiac Mindwarp.
Sputnik made a comeback a little while ago I think. They were great fun though. Saw em live a few times. One time in Finsbury Park, first and only time I’ve experienced tear gas, which some kind person let off in the crowd for a laugh. Caused a bit of mayhem, which is (was, bit old for that sort a thing now) always welcome at gigs.

I’d agree with that. I think it’s because they stopped doing drugs.

Saw them live in Oxford a few years back. It was rock by numbers. You couldn’t fault the performance or the energy, but it was all very clean, staged and soulless. It was almost like there were cues to do things that were meant to be impromptu.

4mins in – say “HELLO OXFORRRRD!” (pronounce ‘Oxford’ incorrectly if possible); 8mins – talk about how happy you are to be here. Look really unhappy; 20mins – shout “**** YEAH!” (reason not important); 36mins in – insult small, unthreatening boy in front row’s mother; 42mins – talk about how drugs are bad; 45 mins – talk about how drugs are bad because you’ve forgotten you’ve already done it; And so on…

They never even had a decent album 😆 the High Priest of Love E.P. was brilliant though. A lot more entertaining than most of the indie landfill.

Some really strange choices in this thread.

Anyone mentioned The Real Poeple yet ? Saw them a couple of times and always thought their early stuff was right good. For scousers.

Can I pre-emptively add The Amazing Snakeheads to the list since the singer has decided to sack the rest of the band? I’m hoping him and the sessions musicians he has hired can prove me wrong.

Having just been listening to the wonders of Jack FM on the work shuttlebus, I thought I’d just pop in and say…

Their current stuff is very safe, very dull and generally a bit rubbish.

The whole nu metal thing was always going to be difficult to sustain – you start out cheesed off about something, make a good album that goes stellar, earn a load of cash etc. I guess it’s quite hard to maintain the spark. Look at KoRn – first album was amazing but nothing else has really come close.

I’m quite partial to a bit of Zodiac Mindwarp! – those quality ditties like Back Seat Education, Elvis Died for You and Skull Spark Joker. But then again, I actually like a lot of hair metal like Poison, Skid Row et al.

    The Levellers.

Apparently they’re still on the go too. Thank christ they disappeared off back into obscurity. Cider swilling, clown clothes wearing, bath-dodging, crusty tossers!

Binners, you will be delighted to know that I saw them last year, headlining the Ramsbottom music festival.

I was ripping some old CDs last night, and found Electric Soft Parade, Turin Brakes and Gomez, which all fit the definition I think.

As for Britpop – anyone remember Powder?

I also loved Longpigs first album. Waited ages for the second which turned out to be a huge let down.

Sleeper were good as mentioned but mainly because we all fancied Louise Whatshername.

How about Kenickie (had a soft spot for Laverne)?
Oh, and Gene? Loved Speak to me Someone and plenty of others off the album were popular although the lead singer came across as a plum.

I thought they had one really good song which they gave several different titles.

Hey, don’t knock it, Red Hot Chilli Peppers have made a career out of it.

Well, no, What Do I do Now and Inbetweener were great pop songs. But, okay, probably 🙂

    Turin Brakes

They were actually my first thought when I saw the thread but I looked them up as I’ve never realised anything happened with them after The Optimist*. I was astonished to discover that they’re still going and that they had two more top ten albums.

*Which I bought, even though it was shit, because I fancied a girl.

I can’t even offer that excuse. What on earth possessed me to buy it remains a mystery.

Yeap, although Slpknot appear to have maintained momentum.

On that note, apparently Limp Bizkit are still going. That surprised me.

    Louise Whatshername

Louise Redknapp (nee Nurding) >> Louise Wener

    Papa Roach

Oh we’re doing pop-Rock are we? (although of the correct age I always hated nu-metal, could listen to Korn and just about tolerate a few others but was happy once that fad died. Until I realised emo was replacing it. *shudder*)

Linkin Park (although they are just plain shite)
Kid Rock (hey covers are cool right?)
    Bloodhound Gang
    Powerman 5000

not rock but also popular for 5 mins then disappear:

    Presidents of the USA
    Barenaked Ladies
    etc.

Are still great… They’re both more like one hit wonders (peaches and one week), in that one song sold a shit load of copies, but otherwise they sold records consistently for years.

I think the bass player is back with them. And there’s only 3 of em anyway.

    Royal Blood

and when was their time, 1976?

The Bizkit’s last album was utter bilge although in all fairness it all went wrong after Significant Other (I like that and $3 Dollar).

Slipknot’s latest album is a bit squiffy and the last one was far too like Stone Sour. The first album was ace…it sounded so evil at the time. They were huge when Iowa was released, but it was odd seeing tiny kids running about in ‘Knot shirts.

I’ll admit to being a baggy trousered, spikey haired nu metal kid with piercings despite being bought up on the Cult, Maiden, Metallica and other classic rock. But I bloody hated Linkin Park. Kid Rock was funny….he’s jumped on a new bandwagon of wannabe safe classic to know.

Powerman 5,000….better left alone. I don’t think they did owt good did they.

I used to really like One Minute Silence too.

Emo seems to have died these days which is good. Fall Out Boy and co were so bloody pretentious.

Ah, Sleeper! Spawned the term ‘Sleeperblokes’ to describe the anonymous bunch standing around behind the cute lead singer. 😀
I liked Sleeper, and Kenickie, who were one of the most enjoyable, fun bands I’ve seen. Got to love a band when the gorgeous lead singer walks on stage and greets the crowd with “hello, totty”
Marie from Kenickie is one of the Cornshed Sisters now, Lauren’s brother Pete, the drummer, is with Frankie and the Heartstrings, I believe, and Emmy-Kate is a research fellow in Urban Studies ant Glasgow Uni.
    Dunno what Ms Laverne’s doing now… 😉
Loved Lush, too, saw them a bunch of times, including Moles in Bath, where I had to keep leaning backwards to avoid being clouted on the nose by Emma’s bass guitar.
Not that Moles is pokey, or has a non-existent stage, you understand…
Speaking of Sleeperblokes, there was another band I saw at The Fleece, anonymous blokes with a cute lead singer, had some success, but kicked the singer out because they didn’t like being overshadowed.
    Wherefore art thou now, theaudience?
As for their erstwhile lead singer, well Sophie Ellis-Bextor did rather better for herself…
There was so much music around back then, and gigs were so cheap, I did thirty-nine in one year, wasn’t difficult to do three in a week, including one in London.
Can’t afford to do that now, sadly. 😐
