Backup lights – front & rear reccomendations – Lezyne or Exposure

Is there much to choose between them ?
Any reliability issues ?

I had a Leyzene one.

Bounced out of the holder on my cross bike on the first bridleway I rode it down and was lost.

Can recommend the Lezyne ones, been using them front and year since about Sept last year for the daily commute. The tiny rear one fits into the red vent in my Giro helmet quite nicely.

Exposure flash and flare – very bright, super light, easy to fit. Haven’t budged a mm on my on or off road bikes. And they come in a nice case too to store the charger and gubbins in.

I owe exposure a massive recommendation for fixing my Diablo which is of unknown vintage under warranty and in double quick time.

Must be a tough market for a UK company, IME they provide great service.

I have electron backupz lights as my emergency backup lights. I had one that came with a dodgy seal or something, stopped working pretty much straight away, but they warrantied that without even looking at it, just posted out a replacement straight away. Other than that, they have worked perfectly. There are two on my daughter’s bike also, and she hasn’t managed to break them or stop them working, which suggests they are quite robust.

Wouldn’t have them as my only light, but as a backup/emergency light, I don’t see any need for anything more expensive, especially not something that needs a charger, which kind of removes the point of a backup light.

My flare is one of the first from approx 2years ago.

As it came it wasn’t fully waterproof and suffered off road. I sent it back it was fixed but it has a habit of turning off which is intermittent.

Maybe the new ones are better but mine certainly needs a second light just in case. When working it’s great though the holder is slightly too down angled IMHO.

Use my Flash and Flare lights all the time while commuting or road riding. Bright enough to make other cyclists comment on them in daylight. Very secure fastening, run time when flashing maybe 4-5 hours. They are fiddly to try and turn on/off while riding along

I got my first Exposure light in 2007 and currently have:

Enduro
Race
Diablo
Joystick
Two Red Eyes
Flash & Flare
Separate battery

As you can see I’m a bit of a fan but I’ve finally given up on the FnF as they’re too unreliable. If the front plays silly burggers at least you can see it’s flickering. Unfortunately the rear is more tricky to monitor, and when you’re on the road, that’s always a bit of a worry.

I’ve re done the spring, tried normal batteries and they’ve been back to Exposure so I think I’ve covered all the standard ‘fixes’.

Recently got one of the Leyzne Micro rears and have been very impressed with it.

Yes it’s much bigger than the Flare but it works and there’s a better selection of modes. Haven’t used it on a MTB as yet but the mount seemed OK and duct tape is cheap if you’re worried about it bouncing out.

If you already have an Exposure light, I’d recommend a Red Eye, especially if you ride on the road. If you’re after a portable backup, then Leyzne imo.
