I hate the way that people (particular chavvy youngsters ) seem to ‘aspire’ to an Audi. From what I read and with some limited personal experience, they are less reliable than, say, Ford. Plus, they don’t handle particularly well and are massively overpriced. RS versions excepted of course.
I have never seen one being driven, ahem, enthusiastically either.
Just my opinion of course, which also applies to other VW group products. Fantastic (but horribly arrogant) marketing.

Don’t know if anyone’s noticed the A6 Avant 3L bi Turbo? It’s a 3L diesel Quattro that does 0-62 in 5.3 secs! How mad is that? Still out of my budget unfortunately! Maybe next year….

An epic (practical) car. Audi were getting shot of these on lease deals earlier this year. I was quoted £340 a month for the black edition on 15k miles per year. Insane amount of car for the money.

Might be a few coming on the market in a couple of years then. 🙂

I’ve been on the lookout for an S4 avant but they are quite rare. Especially the ‘black’ version in black.

Does the black version come in other colours too 8)

I assume that is an attempt at irony?

In fact you can have a white ‘black’ version. The ‘black’ relates to the trim and chrome which is …….black!

This is black edition. As rockape says, it just means all the trim is black.

Yep, RS6 just doesn’t make any sense to me – even if I won Euromillions I doubt I would, just too big to use the power anywhere. But 300+bhp large and capable estate, still turns mid-40s mpg, wafts when you want it to, and quick enough to hurt your face? What’s not to like?

@PF why did I not know about those lease deals? Just read a review – car sounds monstrous!

The original Audi fanboy was of course that well known Austrian Corporal with the moustache. Called Horsch back then, mind you….

Pop over to Germany. They get driven enthusiastically there. An A6 came past me at 145 or so…

    Fine looking car Hanchurch.
Not quite sure why it’s important to point out that the photo is from a few years ago, though. The S4/RS4 looks to be about 2006 vintage – not the slightest bit out of place on the road now(but there again I drive a 2004 200K mileage Saab 9-5 estate, so what do I know about auto cool?)

Or is it the bikes? Now they do look to be perhaps less common on trails nowadays.

But the question I wanted to ask about Audis is to do with their current reliability (or lack of it). As someone who’s always, like others here, admired their clean lines from afar but never owned one (apart from a brief dalliance with a 1991 5 cylinder A4 14 years ago), I had always understood that they were good for 200-300K miles easy. The 1.9 and 2.5 Tdis had a particularly bulletproof reputation. But now when I ask people who work in the car trade about used Audis, they suck their teeth hard and make the sign of the cross. The message seems to be: big bucks! AVOID! Is this true, and what are the reasons?

Could it be that they see something of themselves in the owners?

I bought a standard A4 2.0 Tdi in summer. I spent a lot of time asking questions about reliability and bear in mind we’ve had two A3’s for about 6 years with absolutely no engine problems whatsoever.

The only issue I could find anyone talking about on Audi forums was about ’04 to ’09 2 litre A4’s have an oil pump connector rod which in some cars is too short and can sheer off which may result in catastrophic failure. These issues seem to be related more to the older models but one guy said all models will eventually exhibit that problem. People here and and my local garage man who handles a lot of Audi’s disagreed and I’m inclined to also. There must be tens of thousands of these models out there.

Anyway, mines been faultless for 6 months and I love it. Such a solid, safe feeling car. Yeah, it’s not particularly exciting but that’s fine with me.

More about the bikes, I still have the car ( and bikes ), I have had it from newish it was an Audi demo car, it has been very reliable, it had a new alternator which was expensive, aircon drive belt and the exhaust need es welding a few months ago, apart from that only service costs, brakes and tyres…. Oh and it uses a bit of petrol!

You have minds like a Welsh railway – one track and filthy.
    I reckon you’d both suit……………………………………………………………..A SUBARU.

Best car if have owned was a B7 RS4 Avant, an 08 model. Had it remapped for fuel and carbon cleaned. Stunning vehicle on the open road, fantastic balance and sounded epic. Would buy another in a heartbeat. At the same time I had an RS2 as well which was different but so we’ll put together and still a performance car. I’ve also had an s3 and very briefly an RS6 for a month while the 4 was being fixed, which was a regular occurrence. It did over 20k in warranty work in 3 years. Still loved it despite having no ability to pass a fuel station !
Wife now has a Q5 and it’s quite nice, pondering a new RS4 wagon right now. I do like them.

Guy down the road has an RS4. When he goes past our house it sounds like he’s caning it but when I watch him he’s doing about 30mph. he just keeps it in a low gear so it sounds good. 😉

I had an old work colleague that would do that – in his 1.1L Metro with hand painted matt black paint and hole drilled in the silencer….

New RS4 looks superb & harks back to the old flared arch days slightly, we followed one back from the lakes recently, the thing flew up the dual carriage way over the A66, god knows what speed he did but it looked effortless.

I used to do that with my Puma, sounded wonderful. Got me pulled over by the cops one night, at the bottom of my road; female cop out on a call heard me coming and wouldn’t believe I was only doing 30 in 3rd. 😳
Regarding the Audi driver = cock/Clarkson, I can remember when that happened, Clarkson, who’d always gone on about BMW drivers being nobs started on about Audi drivers because some footballer had one of the new hot Audis.

Sorry but the new RS4 just looks rubbish compared to the last gen one, it was way more aggressively styled and sounded better IMO

As for reliability, grab yourself a copy of vcds and use your laptop to carry out a scan every so often, you’ll soon save hunks of cash and, IMO, always nice to know that the car is working in fine fettle whether the management light is on or not.

A very good friend of mine owns an older A6 2.7tt and despite only 250bhp, it’s an absolutely stunning car to drive, so so well built and does high 20’s taking it steady.

So while not to the same financial outlay some of you chaps are comfortable with, they’re cracking cars and can be had for good money if you keep your eyes peeled.

Had a 20v quattro coupe some time back too, hammering around Derbyshire at about 5am in the summer, lovely 😉 windows open, 5k rpm, awesome!

Being less aggressive looking is probably no bad thing for a lot of customers, many of whom probably don’t want their car to be too obvious. FWIW I think they both look good, I like the new car but RS6s look better in my opinion anyway.

Ever Heard the term Less is More….. the old RS4 had continual issues with the suspension unless you upgraded to a Bilstien set up, hopefully the new one is sorted, I owned a BMW M3CSl for three years & it was superb, not subtle, crap in the wet but god it made a awesome noise, there’s a clip of my old car on youtube, tunnels were interesting with my son sat next to me saying go on dad give it some, inner child hooligan wanting to come out!!

I know but if your getting an RS estate your not really looking for subtle though.

I do agree the RS6 Avants are nicer to look at and sound bloody awesome as well.

Oh I dunno. Some people might buy it because they want a very fast car but need to move stuff about. Some people might buy it because they a very fast car but don’t want something a bit less shouty / flash than a coupe or sports car. Subtle is an entirely subjective term, no doubt we could debate it endlessly. There are plenty of manufacturers whose high powered family models are even less subtle.
