Asbestos in ceiling?

I’ve just drilled a couple of holes in my garage ceiling and had a horrible thought – house was built in 1985 and the ceiling boards didn’t look like the usual fireproof type – just quite thin, normal wallboard types. Anyone have any idea how to tell if they are asbestos, other than getting in a v.expensive survey company? I guess I’ll have to bite the bullet, but any advice would be welcome. I’m a wee bit scared now, because I cut a hole in the ceiling without a mask or anything a couple of years ago, too ……..

Send a small amount off for testing, look online. Won’t cost much

Some councils test for about 30 quid. surveyors for your situation would be absolutely at it.

Can you get a picture up on here? I can probably give you a good idea if you need to worry or not.
Garage ceilings, if integrated into the house, are commonly asbestos on properties built up until mid to late 80s.

As posted previously tho, you can send samples by the post or drop in to a local lab as long as it is double bagged. But really you probably want to know whether you’ve contaminated the garage first before you go back in getting samples. Two small holes in low risk asbestos products like asbestos cement aren’t a problem. Two holes in AIB, however, can produce a lot of fibres.

There is no real problem with asbestos unless its disturbed

As with many older buildings I have worked in make a note of it and have it tested before anything else.

If asbestos then leave it if you can, if you can’t leave it then a fully professional outfit is required to remove it and dispose

Very unlikely to be in the super dangerous spectrum – most likely crysotile or its ilk and therefore of less concern
