It doesn’t seem to be as good as my Garmin was at swim length tracking. I swim a few times a week and tend do do 1km in a 16 m pool and my Garmin was pretty accurate at recording lengths/ distance, so much so I stopped counting myself and relied on it. My Apple Watch undercounts by about 30% it seems

this surprises me, as I find my Apple watch 9 never gets lengths wrong but previous Garmin instinct and Instinct crossover both did.

I haven’t tried my Garmin Epix gen 2 in the pool, as the Apple Watch just works perfectly for me in that environment.

I wonder if it is related to the shortish pool length and how you are turning ?  I do 100 lengths of a 25 m pool in a session, usually 2 sessions a week.  I can either do a conventional turn or a tumble turn, and it works as it should, I presume it ‘turns’ when it detects the arm glide/stop ?

My son has an Apple watch but I’d find daily recharging intolerable. I’m considering going Garmin to Coros simply for longer battery life,

Or Starling…which also works seamlessly with the Garmin pay system (seamlessly as in you don’t need to link your bank account to a third party solution that then links to the Garmin pay system).

I still think Apple and Garmin do different things so aren’t completely comparable. I’m very happy that my Garmin doesn’t do much phone/social stuff – more than happy with it alerting me to incoming calls and messages, but very happy that it doesn’t allow me to reply direct from the phone (it does, but it is so limited that it isn’t worth using).

Apple watch does look very good at what it does (despite me berating it for the daily charge), but it isn’t doing only fitness stuff. As I said, each to their own, but a watch (for me) is to tell time and the fact it does a lot of fitness tracking stuff is ideal. I’m really not wanting it to be a replacement to my phone. Got several friends who have them and are very happy with them (I also don’t think they are saying that just because they paid a lot of money for them, I think it is a genuine like).

I have just changed some medical equipment, the previous kit connected to my phone and I’d need to recharge my phone every single day – it was incredibly annoying as it meant I needed a power supply every single night. Having changed kit that doesn’t use my phone, I’m back to getting over 2 days on a charge with my phone – unplug it Monday morning and I could get to Wednesday mid-morning before having to charge it again. Feels so much better as it means I’m not needing to have something else to pack or check if I’m away anywhere (obviously if I’m away for more than 1 night, then I’m still likely to take charging stuff, but if just for the 1 night, I don’t need to remember it).

I’m assuming people are grabbing quick charge times throughout the day if they are wearing the watch throughout the night to get sleep details and all that? If not, they are probably missing out on a lot of potentially useful data, but I like the fact my Garmin needs recharged every 10 days and my phone is now every 2 days…

Thought I’d bump this thread, instead of creating a new one.

My question is: can an Apple Watch do turn by turn navigation?

My Garmin Edge 510 bike computer is on the way out and the rubber has perished around the on / off button so I don’t have any faith in it surviving the winter.  Plus my HRM chest strap has given up the ghost.  It seems that an Apple Watch could be cheaper than a new Garmin + HRM strap, plus I’d get additional usage out of it as a fitness tracker and hiking watch.

The way I use my Edge 510 to navigate is: plot a route in Ride with GPS, then export as GPX to the Edge 510, then follow course on the ride.

Can something similar be done on the Apple Watch?  Bonus if it gives a warning before each turn (the Garmin can do this) and display the junction on a map.

Suspect plenty Garmin watches can do that, although might need one with maps so may not be as cheap (but you will get far better battery life!)…doesn’t really answer your question but there are options.

You can follow a fox on an Apple Watch using the WorkOutDoors app (£8 on the App Store), but not with turn by turn directions. It will inform you if you’re off route though. Works very well on road but I’m yet to try it off road. Should be fine in most cases I’d think, but you’d need to take your hand off the bar to look at the watch.

You can get turn by turn directions on the footpaths app, (another subscription but at least its pretty cheap) and you can also make routes on apple maps and follow those, but it’s not in an activity so it’s not a slick as the garmin way for me.

I’ve just started the return for my apple watch ultra, I was going to keep it so that I’ve got both, but even as a used buy, it’s a lot of money for something that I’m realistically not going to use. It’s pretty good and there are some things that I prefer to Garmin, but its’ not there just yet.

Definitely getting closer, and I’m sure I’ll try again one day.

    Thanks all.

i should also say that, I’ve had 3 Garmin products (two bike computers and a watch) and I’ve grown to hate them all.  Cheap feeling hardware and terrible, buggy software. The rubber perishing on my Edge 510 is an example of this. Good battery life though!

edit: does anyone use the Outdoor Active watch app? I have a sub for that at the moment.

Worth noting that Decathlon’s ‘Kiprun’ app sync’s up to your Apple Watch’s fitness data.

You earn points for each workout.

    And what to points mean?

Prizes! (or money off decathlon purchases).

finally got the watch, wanted to have a look, than buy online, thanks all for useful info advise

the 40mm was tiny so got the 44mm SE, perfect size, the AppleCare at £50 for 2 years seems a no brainer. with my history.

definitely feels premium, popped to bike shop and used the strava app, works well.

swimming tomorrow and a gym class.

Pretty sure my next apple watch is going to be a Garmin Enduro3…

It seems that the Apple Watch does now do turn by turn navigation in the maps app.

You first have to create a custom route in the maps app on an iPhone, iPad or Mac running the latest OS. Then you can load that on the watch and follow.

I’m going to go for it, but just have to decide between a series 9 refurb or SE2 refurb.

I’ve just bought one from Argos.

Series 9, 45mm case, GPS + Cellular, Midnight, Sport Loop, £339!

Presumably you mean for off-road routes? I’ve used the Maps nav function several times to find a specific place while I’m walking, without creating a custom route. The only problem I’ve encountered was in Bristol, drunk, a few weeks ago, when I turned right instead of left as instructed and couldn’t work out why the watch was sending me around in circles. 😀

Yes to off road, but also a custom route where I know a certain road is too busy / fast to cycle on and there is a country lane alternative.

Apple maps likes to try to route via the A34 or A420. I’m not crazy so I’m not cycling on those!
