Mrs BD recently started a PhD at Bristol vet school and we’re looking to relocate from the other side of the country. We’ve been looking at rental houses but struggling a bit as we have a dog and a lot of landlords don’t want to know, if that’s the case. But, we have had an application accepted on a house in Nailsea. Mrs BD has seen the house, I haven’t (I’m still on the other side of the country!). The house is ok, if a little pricey, but we’re not sure about the area. Any local knowledge on Nailsea or the surrounding area would be much appreciated.

Loads of Bristol folk move there when they have kids. Nice area, good links for transport.

Yep Bristol commuter belt. It has a Waitrose, if that gives you an impression. The Langford vet school isn’t easy to get to on public transport so I guess your wife will have to drive anyway. When you say pricey, compared with similar properties in the area? Bristol and surrounds are expensive and the prettier villages (e.g. Mendips) or coastal villages more so. Good luck to your wife btw. hope she enjoys the PhD.

I live in Backwell which shares a station with nailsea. We moved here from s Bristol for the schools like everyone else. It’s fine but not as much fun as Bristol, which I miss, even though we now have parking and a lot more space. It really depends what you’re looking for! It’s commuter belt basically. Some decent riding from the door. Easy access to bris and the motorway. Direct train to paddington believe it or not.

I’m in Clevedon, couple of miles away. Nailsea is a nice area. That and the fact that it (shared with Backwell) has a train station straight into Bristol means it’s a bit of a commuter town and priced accordingly. Naturally I prefer Clevedon, but if someone forced me to move to Nailsea I wouldn’t be devastated. There’s lots of riding from the doorstep or a short drive from either place 🙂

For sure it seems renting is pretty hard around here, my sympathies.

Oh, and my missus works at Langford vets school too.

Thanks for all the comments so far. Much appreciated. Transport links are useful, but not essential as I’ll be working from home and Mrs BD would be driving to Langford anyway. Encouraging to hear that there’s plenty of riding nearby. We spend most of our spare time out on the bikes, or walking our dog. We’ve been living in a quiet village in Norfolk, for the last few years, so I guess we’re just looking for somewhere we can get around safely and there aren’t packs of feral children roaming the streets! 😉😁

Ex-feral child who grew up roaming the streets of Nailsea here. It’s alright. Good riding as mentioned above (Stoney Steep gets you up onto the Twickenham Ridge quickly). Some good pubs too (the Blue Flame, the Ringers), and some rough ones (Glasshouse, the Oak) but that might have changed. You don’t mention kids but there’s two active Scout groups. Easy to get to and away from by road and rail. Is John Brown’s on the High Street still going?

Yes, live in Portishead just down the road. Nice place, strawberry line for dog walks and gravel ride to cheddar good. If you day trip to Bristol then go to St Nicks food market 😋
Spoke to the sustrains guys the cycle path from Clevedon to weston opens in Easter, be amazing for a cycle that.
All in all a nice place to live, lots to do. People are generally friendly, watch the retired NIMBY’s tad bit aggressive but hey, not the end of the world 😉
