Seems I need to have my hip resurfaced, too young for a full blown new hip. I’ve gone through all my scans/x-rays etc., op yet to be scheduled, looking like late Jan.

I’ve pretty recently bought a new bike after not riding for a while. At the moment, I can’t even get a leg over it!

Has anyone had a similar operation? Have you continued riding/running etc., as you did before symptoms? How long was your recovery (I know it’s completely personal, I’m after some good news stories).

No personal experience but Andy Murray ran around a tennis court after hip resurfacing – in comparison biking should be much lower impact.

I had my hip resurfaced just over 3 years ago. I was on the turbo after 8 weeks, as soon as I got the all clear from the surgeon. Up to that point, you have to avoid bending the hip beyond a right angle. I was riding outdoors after 12 weeks and would say it is pretty much good as new now.

I’m desperately waiting for the other one to be done, which should be in the next month or so, all being well.

Perthes disease at about ~12 years old, which is necrosis of the head of the femur. Due a hip replacement sometime soon, was told then to expect it in my thirties, now I’m 40 and somehow it’s still going. The ONLY thing that keeps my hips working is riding my bike. When I have an off-bike spell I lose the strength in my legs that seems to be holding them together. I credit low-impact cycling with keeping my hips working well. Get the op done, recover, then get on yer bike.

I had a resurfacing 7 years ago at 60 years of age, and was riding again after about 2 months, although cautiously. I was back to riding the same stuff as I was before after about 6 months. I left it that long as I was advised that as the femoral head has to be milled down for the operation it is relatively weak for up to a year. I Don’t even think about it now, and it survived a recent off while riding the road bike when I landed on the hip and fractured my pelvis. Contrary to what rogerturner said I was given advice that I could bend the hip through any position. Although that is not the advice given for total resurfacings. As has been said before Andy Murray had a resurfacing and carried on playing professional tennis for a good few years. Although I read somewhere that on the pro tennis circuit the expected lifespan would be around 7 years, although in that 7 years it would probably get more wear than a normal person would give it in 50years.  I have had no problems with mine although I don’t run any more as I have a dodgy knee and also that I want the hip to last the rest of my life, although a revision is easier with a resurfacing as the whole femur is still there. Cycling is, of course not weightbearing and is good exercise for artificial hip patients, although it does get some pounding standing up mountainbiking.

full hip replacement in 2017.   back on exercise bike after 18 days. back riding gently a week or so later.

do what the physio says. dont ride anything dodgy until you feel very strong and hip feels up to it.

you will be able to tell when this is.

Had my right hip resurfaced 14 years ago at the age of 50,only stopped riding this year because my knee is knackered.i did all the rehab but waiting till three months before I was back on the bike. one year after the op I did the coast to coast with no problems at all.

Watching with interest as I’m due a resurface later this year. Riding is currently mostly fine if I’m less likely to have impacts – my road and gravel bikes have been getting more love last year.
