Anyone entered the Manchester 10km Bupa run?

Just asking as started running and decided to give it a go. £39 entry seems a bit steep but suppose it is quite expensive to run the event.

Hoping to do it around the hour mark , give or take 😉

That’s silly money, they’re ripping you off. Most 10ks are c £15.
Go onto Runner’s World and find a more local race run by a club and you won’t be lining the pockets of a commercial organiser.
Salford 10k run by Salford Harriers is in the next month or so IIRC

I’ve done it five or six times now. The price has shot up though – it was about £20-£25 IIRC last time I did it.

Great fun, and an unbelievable atmosphere. Don’t know as I’d pony up forty quid for it though.

Same price as last year i think… Yes i’m signed up for it and tbh, given the atmosphere and how much i enjoyed it then i didn’t have any qualms in parting with my money again this year.

Last time was my first 10k run and I was ill for a while before the race so entered on the back of pretty much no training. I managed it in about 1 hour 1 minute. This time i’m aiming for sub 50 minutes. It will be a big ask and i’ll be relying on the atmosphere to get me round!

I actually e-mailed them last week to see if any of the entrance money actually went to charity, and if the company running the event were profit making in any way. Received reply saying that the entry fee went towards staging the event, but no mention was made of whether or not anyone made a profit or not!

Cougar – how do you get into Manchester,I live the other side of Burnley and debating whether to get train in or see what it’s like on the day with my car.

Whatever you do, it’s going to be busy. I think the easiest is to drive and park a little way away then walk in. IIRC, parking at Heaton Park and Metro-ing in was ok too, so long as you get there early enough to beat the rush.

I made the mistake one year of parking at Old Trafford (I worked there at the time) and getting the Metro; problem was, half of Manchester had the same idea and it was rammed. The first two trams were so full I physically couldn’t get on, by the time the third one arrived I was in danger of being late so I wedged myself in. Mental.

AFAIK there’s no charity or grassroots benefit to the Bupa runs at all.

Nova Events run them on Bupa’s behalf. For Bupa it is purely a sponsorship exercise.

Put your money to a locally organised race where the money goes to a local promoter and grass roots rather than the shareholders of a private organisation for whom running is simply a source of profit…

Honestly, that price is a total rip off…

Nothing to stop you running for charity, of course. Many will pay your entry fee if you raise enough.

Am doing the National Three Peaks challenge later in the year so don’t really want to ask anyone for further donations. Am doing it simply to give myself a goal to work towards, otherwise I’ll p*ss about and not do any training etc. Am also doing the Manchester 100 (KM!) ride on the first of September, but that’s only £19.50 to enter and I suppose you could say that it is harder to organise due to the three events and distances covered.

Yeah. I always found raising money more of a pain than the actual run. I’ll just be doing it as a personal challenge. I’m no athlete; my personal best was the first one I did, like 8 years ago. I’d be ecstatic if I could beat it (an hour dead).

Just had a reply saying they are indeed a profit making company, but they did send the following link to show where you can do various runs ‘for free’ so fair play to them.

The company who organise it are called Nova International, they also do the Great North run and others. The company I work for supply the large LED variable message signs telling you where to collect your baggage from and where the loos are. In fact, I’ll be on duty for the Manchester run, changing messages etc.
