Still haven’t understood why a little squishy tube of sugar costs more than a quid.  I like SIS ones mainly, but £10 for 7 isn’t exactly a bargain.  Anything cheap and cheerful out there? (Bag o’ Haribo for backup, for those about to suggest that)

If you are not that particular have a look for ones on offer or short dated.

eBay is a good source or just Google. Normally seems to be high 5 on offer. Might be some deals on the kmc (Kendal mint cake ones) too.

I just use maltodextrin, pinch of salt and black currant squash and make my own

Hey anagallis , that’s interesting.  I guess they wouldn’t have the same shelf life but nice idea.  Do you have to boil everything up then let it set?

Need to be gels, or would easily digestible bars work?

I find the Nakd raw fruit bars excellent as on the bike fuel. Soft texture, easy to swallow without water, and a similar number of calories to gels (about 140 per bar).

In my local supermarket they’re often on offer at £2 for a box of 4 – so 50p each.

A 250g bag of Tesco jelly babies used to be my go-to.

Unless you’re already using something similar and you want a couple of gels for the ride as extra, have you tried a drink powder that contains carbs and caffeine?

I’m trying my first big jar of High5 carbs and caffeine, was ~£18 iirc on Amazon spend & save. Recommended dose per 750ml bidon does ~45 bidons iirc.

    Get thee to Home Bargains.

My local one almost always has some in, for around the 80p each mark.

I love Home Bargains! It’s the queen of all shops.

No just cold water, give it a stir and put in a soft flask thing with a bite valve just needs to be thin enough to go through valve. You could add a bit of fructose to the maltodextrin to increase gut uptake if you are bothered about that sort of thing
