There’s no shortage of famous types happy to denigrate cyclists – Matthew Parris, Clarkson, crying-boy James Martin, Nigel Havers…

I was disappointed to see Faulks describe several incidents of “cyclists with no lights charging down the pavement” (more or less word for word and irrelevant to the plot) in his novel “A week in December”.

Does he have previous? I was thinking of asking him but there’s no direct email on his website, he doesn’t tweet, though he is on FB.

    Any others?

You’re getting all het up over some comments in a work of (I presume) fiction?
    Really?

Not het up, much as you might like.

It’s just irrelevant and provides nothing but disclosure of the author’s prejudices. I thought he seemed a decent bloke when I’ve seen/heard him previously.

Is there anything else in his book that you thought was irrelevant ?

You could draw up a big list of all the things you deem irrelevant to his fictional story, and send it to him.

I’m sure he’d be appreciative of your help editing his future work ?

I found said book on the seat of a plane I was catching from Singapore to Melbourne. Probably wouldn’t have read it otherwise. I thought it was a good read.

That book is meant as a satire.

Mattew Parris is one of the most twisted douche bags with an opinion about everything, yet he knows **** all about it.

I am also anti “cyclists with no lights on charging down the pavement”.

Ok, so they’re more people on bikes than cyclists, but I’m still anti them.

I think the OP is fair enough. even a novel indicates the writer’s inner prejudices and that sort of crap, tarring us all with the same brush is really not fair or helpful.

I think Matthew Parris was having an off day when he wrote that piece so i forgave him but haven’t forgotten. He is a brilliant journalist in my view and not a typical Tory by a long shot.

Exactly what I think of your post Neal.

Perhaps we can agree we have different opinions and you don’t have to flame folk every time you see something you disagree with?

I don’t quite know what we’d do without you constantly pointing out what you feel to be rubbish.

I can’t believe that someone as successful as JK Rowling writes about wizards and stuff.

I mean surely, writing about such stuff betrays her real belief in a supernatural school system hidden on a secret railway line.

I don’t quite know what we’d do without you constantly pointing out what you feel to be rubbish.

    Oh the ironing.

cyclists with no lights charging down the pavement

Totally devoid of any context I couldn’t possibly jump to the conclusion you have from this one sentence.

I am now boycotting Sebastian Faulks books. Never read one, but now will ensure I never do. It’s akin to being a racist.
I’m reading a Cormac McCarthy book at the moment and the number of times he says “****” is appalling. Don’t know how they get away with it.

Oh well, at least someone got it, for the haterz, ask mummy to give you a gold star.

Erm, it’s utterly connected to your diatribe posts.

That’s my point – there is no context. a character is walking down the pavement and a cyclist nearly hits them. No other mention of cyclists or anything else to make it relevant, no input from the incident into the plot at all (except perhaps bar one).

So what were the other “several” incidents in the work of fiction that you’re complaining about

Btw, I don’t like cyclist who charge down the street with no lights either.

    Well done. So we agree.

He posted purely to have a pop at me, rather than to say anything about the subject of the thread.

    Just like I said.

    there is no context

Well you’ve now given us more context than your OP with this:

a character is walking down the pavement and a cyclist nearly hits them

and that context makes this whole thread even more baffling.

I can see I could waste a lot time going nowhere with this. I’m off to find a wheel size thread.

I’ve had a long look at most of your posting history, you all post stuff I find trivial and irrelevant, so from now on I’ll tell you about this every time it happens – a worthwhile thing to do yes?

We should probably lynch Sebastian Faulks just in case….

At night? We could charge him down as he walks on the pavement

If we lynch him and he dies then he’s innocent. We really need to know though.
