Angry at someone slagging off my bike

There’s always a bit of ribbing goes on between riding buddies, especially gears vs SS, the usual 29er clown bike stuff etc.

Must admit though, that sounded a little O.T.T.
I think I’d have been angry too.

it’s more fun to ride than your mum, and I should know, as I’ve given them both a right pounding every which way. also, they’re both so filthy, I have to hose them down afterwards.

was on holiday last week and i had propped my bike up outside a cafe whilst the GF and i grabbed an ice cream. sat there in our normal clothes and two German “enduro” lads came along and went into the cafe. overheard them talking. one of them started talking about my (admittedly rather loud) DB Alpine…. saying that you can’t do anything on a HT, it was just a show bike, 2.4 tyres on a HT were pointless, blah blah blah…

i sat there smiling with the GF about it, talking in English, obviously.

sawe them the next day at the top of a trail. followed them in and shouted at them to move aside. they did so. got to the bottom and expected them to arrive before the GF, but no, she arrived laughing at how shit they were. we stood at the bottom for another minute and saw them coming down, brakes squealing. shouted “faster!” at them and rode off.

i felt smug.

oh, and the GF’s riding has leaped forward over the past few months… i’ve got a new riding buddy!

Someone described my brown SC Butcher as abit ugly. I agreed. Doesn’t mean its not good to ride.

The Thorn has a very particular look that is very er traditional. Perhaps you should pop along to CTC bike meet?

When I was a youth you would get heckled for such a machine in a MTB group. Slagging off other people’s bikes is a social part of riding – hence the joke names for bikes – Snappiere Cracknfail and my favourite GT stands for Girls Tourer.

There’s a fella at work who rides the 3 miles from his house to the office on a nice clean CAAD8, on dry days only, who would merrily takes the piss out of my bargain bin fixie or my cheap old Carrerra by the bike stands.

I caught, passed and dropped him on the way home a few times now on the fixie, and he knows I’ve got another 13 miles to go after I’m past his house, So he’s stopped taking the piss out of my crappy bikes (not that he was wrong, they are crap), but smiling and laughing along, then tearing his legs off is a far better response than getting all angry and shouty…

Weird maybe? but I like other riders to think me and my bikes are crap. Keeps the fools foolish.

Out on a ride with my lad a while back I left my 2005 Orange five outside the cafe at temple newsem, leeds. Two other bikers left the cafe shortly after and spent a while looking at my five and seemed to be discussing it.

I’m pretty sure they were saying how it was a classic design and probably one of the best mountain bikes ever made, and actually they look really nice in the flesh……

….and not…..WTF is that filing cabinet outside the caff?!?

We always get some smirks and giggles thrown at us when we do the National Retrobike rides. Especially last year in Surrey by a couple of fancy modern full suss bike guys. They didn’t like it when I was urging them to go faster down the trails – I let them go first to be polite but even after waiting a while I caught up with them easily on my fully rigid V/brake 94 Kilauea.

Never judge a rider at all, but if you really want to, judge the riding not the bike!
