Alternatives to Sealskinz?

I have a few pairs of sealskinz socks and TBH they aren’t that brilliant.

I know the ideal of a waterproof sock does not really exist cos water dribbles in through that big hole in the top! I have had other issues with them that it really isn’t worth going into.

I am after a sock that will keep my tootsies warm and dryish in the winter. I have a pair of winter boots but my feet still get cold when the temperature dips too low.

Apart from the inevitable “I use a pair of plastic bags under my normal socks” response…. any ideas?

merino. i liuke the embers ones; although i have some walking socks that are just as good. but too long.

Sounds terrible, I think you have answered ur own question.
Socks have got a big hole in the top you are right and for that reason alone they will never be waterproof.

I wear Bridgedale socks and just accept that i,m gonna get wet and cold but i have the upper hand in that my skin is waterproof !

Once you are wet thro then you aint gonna get any wetter !
You can only dry out from there on in.
As for putting feet in plastic bags 😯 Why would you even admit to that let alone partake in such antics ?

I cut two 3″ (ish) “tubes” from the bottom of an old wetsuit. I use these to seal the tops of the merino lined Sealskins socks – my feet stay 100% dry, however much it rains.

Sufr-mat. you should write to sealskinz with that idea. To be honest, i also find them sh*t. I’ve even taped up the tops with gaffer tape and they still didn’t stay dry. They should be sued under trading standards – not fit for purpose

Disco – I asked them if they did anything to seal the tops (and suggested my idea) – they said they didn’t and appeared not to be interested in my idea!

Works a treat though and no ripped out leg hair!

Bridgedale wool socks – brilliant

I need to get some neoprene and try this out. I’m sick of wet feet in the wniter (and this is using endura overshoes as well)

Where can i get some neoprene?

SealSkinz are waterproof but, as the OP points out, water can run in from the top as it can with winter boots.

I like Surf Mat’s idea or something along those lines.

It all depends how much water there is, where it’s coming from and how long you’re riding for.

If it’s not raining but very wet underfoot then SealSkinz work fine. Raining but on a short ride – accept a bit of dampness. Raining on a long ride – overtrousers/gaiters/neoprene thingies.

td – know any surfer/windsurfers/kayakers? Most have unwanted wetsuits lying around.

Failing that, most manufacturers should have some spare neoprene lying around. At the very worst, try and pick up some cheap neoprene socks and cut the tops off.
