A couple of Ladybower questions

is this permissive? I know this one is and would like to know if this is another link option for me?

Also, Tornado jets in the valley. Every night? Every wednesday? At random? The last two times I've been up i've seen them/it and it's incredible and i'd love to be on the dam when it comes over

I've ridden from the crossroads towards the top of Wooler Knoll following the black broken line on the OS map back down to the shoreside path – that's pretty good actually. Or from Win Hill there's a killer descent going due east on the footpath (steppy and droppy) which I've not tackled.

I'd ride the footpaths if it's in the evening with only 1 or 2 other riders 😯

On the ground there is a proper bridleway signed up and down along that edge of the reservoir – think its a combination of the black dashes and a couple of footpaths on that (out of date!) map?

If you zoom in to 1:25k* on streetmap it shows the permissive b.ways (in orange), the gradual descent from the top of the climb you say you already know is premissive is, but only to just before your second unsure point. The bit you pointed to is a bit naff, though where it descends back to the reservior is pretty good

*which actually shows the paths atop that climb in the right places relative to one another, unlike the 1:50k map

Sort of permissive in that no-one really cares if you do ride it although having said that I'd avoid doing it mob-handed on a sunny Sunday afternoon!

Low-flying round the Peaks is actually quite rare, it has a nasty habit of interfering with the approaches into Manchester and East Midlands. We saw the Dakota of the Battle of Britain flight last time we were there though and I watched the Dambusters anniversary celebrations over there a few years ago – seeing the Lancaster thundering over the dam was beautiful.

I believe that one is signed on the ground as a footpath. I *might* have ridden it (purely for research purposes, you understand), and it *might* be a perfectly decent, not too steep, not too technical climb, and it *might* be an easy way to get to the top of Parkin Clough… 😉

You cannot ride the fun steppy one down from Win Hill which turns into a short alpine style blast as it is a footpath.

Pook – it's not permissive as such there are no signs saying its either a FP or BW IIRC. Having said that it's not much fun, a very steep grassy up, a fairly boggy and uninteresting traverse and a mediocre (and vague in places) drop back down to the BW which meets the bottom of the Beast.

I've ridden the Win Hill FP many times (very early in the am) and can heartily reccommend it.

Scruff, which one is Parkin Clough? I know the names but can never relate it to places on the ground! It's not the track I indicated is it??

It comes of the railway line at the other side of the Ladybower dam. (Which you are also supposed to walk! yeah right!)

Parkin clough is the track directly opposite the end of Ladybower dam. I have been up it before and regretted it big time. It gets to the same place eventually, but you are better off turning L then R onto the railway line and taking the FP on the right a little way down the line.

crazy-legs- it plummets straight down off Winhill to Yorkshire Bridge. Its a seriously proper difficult tech fest.

you can get to very near wooler knoll (move pooks linky map across a bit away from heatherdene towards kinder) on a concessionary bridle way – its the forest track that loops up and back down parallel to the waterside path – a very short cheeky section makes a handy link

Yeah, found it about 20 seconds after asking! 😳
Not marked on the map but also very near there – as you climb up from Ladybower towards Whinstone Lee Tor the BW turns L towards Cutthroat Bridge. Go straight on however and there's a FP which drops VERY steeply straight off the front of the hill. Very technical in places. They do get upset about you riding that though…

parkin clough runs due east off win hill to yorkshire bridge and is way too hard for me and problematically cheeky – as in pick time carefully

can any one plot on bike a good little bit through this area thats rideable from the resevoir upto the hope cross area??? would be cool instead of going up that long slog of a bank a bit further up the resevoir?

Dark peak are now my local trails, moved here a few months ago and spent most of the summer exploring.

Am taking a mate round this weekend, must get him to bring his walking boots and take a look at the whinstone lee alternative…

I think it’s probably a good idea to keep sensitive local knowledge trails for email discussion only. There’s some amazing cheek to be found but it’s best not to broadcast it too loud and clear. Save it for off peak (lol) times too, though that’s no guarantee of a hassle free ride; I got told how irresponsible it was of me to be hurtling down Parkin clough at 30 mph the other day by a so-called biker out for a walk despite the fact I was stopped waiting for him to climb up. If I could ride it at 30mph Sam hill would be looking over his shoulder next world champs!
