Bike to work time again and i am looking for a road bike. Ideally I would like to spend £800 so I can get a few bits but will spend £1k if it is the right bike. I have looked at the 2012 Giant Defy 2 @ £800 and the Defy 1 @ £1k and they seam to be good. I have also looked at a 2012 Trek 2.1 @ £1k and a Specialised Allez Elite @ £919. The secteurs seem pricy for the groupset @ £1k for a tiagra bike. I am looking for a relaxed riding position capable of comfortably getting me from London to Paris next year and would appreciate your help!

Take a look at the Cube bikes, CReaction have some 105 in that bracket and an Ultegra for not much more.

Anyone know were you can test ride a cube road bike in the surrey hills?

Canyon, ribble, planet x, boardman. All great value at that price.

Was in a similar situation a month ago. Giant and Trek sized up very differently for me. Trying them for size is most important.

Defy didn’t fit me at all in any size. Went for a Trek 2.1 (Leopard colours) and couldn’t be happier. If you’re not fussy about the colours a 2011 2.1 can be found for around £850 IIRC – there are also some great deals on the 2011 Giant TCR2 around, which sizes differently to a Defy. I wanted guard mounts so went for the Trek.

I’d reckon it would have to be the Boardman. great value, top spec, wins awards.

Have a good look at the Planet X Pro Carbon. I went from a S-Works Roubaix (similar geometry to the Secteur, I think) with its relaxed / sportive intentions to a Planet X Nanolight Hi Mod and think the world of it.

I’d say it’s as least as comfortable on long rides (having done a few decent 100km+ hauls on it) as the Specialized and a Ti Litespeed before it too. For just under a grand, the Planet X offers an awful lot of bang for buck and they’re on the cycle to work thing too.

I bought a Planet X pro carbon on the cycle to work scheme, and absoluely love it!!! I did JOGLE on it this year after training for 3 months and smiled all the way! I love it so much that I seriously want to give up MTBing and just ride road(however my mtb ride buddies will kill me!!)
I’m thinking of moving up to a Nanolight Guru as a treat to myself, but just can’t turn my back on my mates!!! Help on this matter would be appreciated!!
Buy the pro carbon, it’s better value than any other bike on the market!

Sounds like a new conundrum… Planet X, cube, rubble etc will be hard to find test rides, yet the advice is to ride some. At least I know to stop reading the specs and ride some. Thanks guys. Happy for other opinions tho!
