Love my 456 ss to bits, with pikes it superb but thinking of complementing it with a similar feel full susser, but 4″ bikes seem to have steeper head angles or 120mm fork travel only, and I really like the slackness of the 456ss.
    Any recommendations?

Orange ST4 (would and angleset fit on this?)

I think the Santa Cruz Nickel is fairly slack for the travel.

if you got a 6″ trail bike then swapped the shock for one which was

    a) shorter eyelet-eyelet
    b) shorter stroke

by the appropriate amount (1/3 off the stroke and the same distance off the eyelet to eyelet) you’d end up with a slack bike with 4″ travel? Might do the trick

    Otherwise, bottlerocket/double

My two bikes which I’ve got setup to feel pretty much identical:

Poor pic of the actual bike but its a 456SS, 105mm forks, 1×9 setup.

    And its perfect partner?

Blur 4X, now with 36 Float Rs for increased madness…

My Mrs’s Blur 4X comes out at a 66 degree HA with a 140mm fork, which makes it quite good fun.

Interestingly my Zesty with a 150mm fork also comes out with a 66 degree HA, which makes it feel like a slightly bigger & more forgiving version of the Blur.

Another vote for a blur 4x

how slack is your 456? how slack (in Deg) do you want the full sus to be?

resisted, I was after one since a test ride in 2007, this one came up on the classifieds late last year at a very good price (or at least a very good price for a blur 4x!) luckily I had the cash sitting in my account at the time and was able to transfer most of the parts from my hardtail across, have since spent a small fortune on replacing almost everything. Keep an eye out though as they do come up for sale every so often.

    another thread

Pivot Mach 4 (Check out Benji’s long term test reports)

The SC Superlight @ 120mm wouldn’t be too steep, I run my with 115mm Reba’s and it’s a fricken laugh but not as slack as my Prophet… I did wonder about angle offset shock mounts but don’t believe there enought space behind the lower mount to fit. Maybe one of the new angleset 1 1/8 headset is worth playing with.

Pushing it up to 5″/130mm travel..

Sounds like you need some sort of 4X type bike. I’ve just sold my Kona Howler frame, but it sounds just the ticket. It comes as standard with a 200mm shock, but I mostly used it with a 190mm just to slacken and lower it a bit and then used U-Turn Pikes on the front varying between 125mm and 140mm travel. Great fun and the easiest bike I’ve ever ridden on which to loft the front end.

I’ve been looking at this recently and can’t believe there aren’t more short travel bikes out there with 67 deg or less HA.

Knolly Endophin was about the best I found, very expensive though. Also there is the Banshee (Mythic) Spitfire that is worth looking at.

Or maybe one of these –

Or going up to 127mm travel, a Yeti ASR5 has a 67 degree head angle with 140mm forks on.

Trance and C’dale Rush shouldn’t be discounted either if you thinking 2nd hand, both very versatile bikes.
Local Leisure Lakes guys couldn’t rave enough about the Rush demo they had in (yes couple of years back)… said it could (& did) take a lot more than a classic XC bike should.

    EDIT: Ricko’s… great minds..

oh and the other one I was trying to think of… Was another Pivot frame.. the M4X four cross frame[/url]

Not quite 4 inches, but have been considering both the yeti arc5 and mythic spitfire in this sort of category. Came very close to buying a 4x on eBay the other day. Hassle with bearings put me off in the end (have an old blur xc and bearings do need changing quite often and are pricey.)

Spitfire is 5″ and 66 degrees with a Mythic Munro Headset and Lyriks. Absolute monster of a bike, love mine!

As already said above, something like a Kona Howler, Cowan DS or Dudu (if you can get hold of one) would be great. I’ve had a couple of Cowan DS’s and more recently imported a new old stock Dudu frame from USA – felt great with forks set at 120mm and wound out to 140mm for d/h. Only sold it as I bought my old Tazer back – another build that feels pretty damn perfect at 120-140mm 😀 . Currently waiting on an older Heckler from ebay USA – fingers crossed that’ll feel just as good as the Tazer with the forks wound out a little more and a tad more skill compensation 😉

Paulrockliffe i’m thinking of a Spitfire but with 140mm forks have you tried it with that travel fork, if so what is it like?

Mailed you on the ad linked from your profile. Got an 2011 ST4 frame I’m probably going to have to sell.
Mail in profile if you are interested.

My Lyriks are u-turn, I tend to ride them at 140 when I can’t be bothered messing about with them. Probably the perfect compromise for all round riding if you haven’t got travel adjust. But it is designed to be very versatile and it’s really wants u-turn forks if that’s an option for you. Climbs a lot better at 115mm and it’s a shame to not have the full 160 available for Lakes smashing.

I’m going to sell my 4″ 07 trance frame soon. stick some 140mm pikes or similar on that and you’ll be giggling. 100mm fork = 70.5° HA but with 140’s that’d come down to 68.5°. It was good with 130 revelations on but I re-built it with 140 marz 44’s to do the 100k HONC which wasn’t all that bad. Had a play in the woods on it the following week and god it was fun. 3lb lighter and more fun than my 09 marin wolfridge.

Jonseyboy, completly agree. If you want a reasonably strong FS with 4-5″ travel see if you can get one of these.

Here is mine. I think its a great little xc bike. Not sure what the angle of dangle is but its slack. 125mm forks on the front, with very little issues with cranks slamming into the ground.

I am also trying to find a stronger version of this. understand all the blur 4x and other type bikes but you need to run them with 150+ forks to get a good angle. Plus if they are 4x specific they tend to be shortish, so you end up with a larger frame. I am thinking custom nicolai at this point.

IMO there’s little point choppering a bike out just to have a fashionably slack HA you can boast about on the internet if it raises your BB to the detriment of cornering ability.

    RudiBoy

    GW agree.

On the sinister though it actually lowers the BB and slackens out the HA.

just a general opinion (don’t know anything about the sinster)
