Recommedations for a 140mm fork for a Ragley Blue Pig

Hi,

I snapped up a 2010 Blue Pig frame from JE James before Christmas, but now I don’t know which fork to fit. Ideally I’d like to run 140mm travel, within a budget of £300. Am I hoping for the impossible? They don’t have to be light, but do need to be fairly burly as I’m not the most subtle of riders. Main use will be XC, with a bit of downhill action thrown in for chuckles.

I was looking at these though I’m guessing they wouldn’t fit with the 1.125″ steerer?

Sorry for the newbie post…this is the first bike I’ve built up and the range of stuff available is a wee bit daunting.

Sektors? Just got some, havent ridden them.

Apparently they are pikes but less gnarly, certainly not as heavy as I expected. I’m currently telling everyone to shop here for them, as they are way cheaper than anywhere else I’ve seen….

Pike 454’s – there are a couple of sets on the for sale section at the moment for £200 ish (2nd hand).

As mackem says – Sektors seem to be getting the nod in the “not too expensive” 140mm category. Frankly, your £300 budget isn’t really going to stretch to something worthy of the frame, unless you go second-hand.

Secondhand Fox TALAS? Running some on my Blue Pig, with 100/120/140 travel and they’re great. What about some Revelations, again maybe second hand?

140 revelations rlt from James for £320 going on my pig tomorrow.

The 9mm QR ones are 140mm the rest are 150.

The frame isn’t exactly brimming with the latest technologies though is it? Its £260 through a distributer (okay if you buy through CRC they are one and the same). Its a 5.5lbs frame so while okay for 130-150mm steel its 1/4lb heavier than an ibis mojo sl, so fork weight ought not to be a must to keep really low.
Sector 20mm (or 15mm?) shouldn’t be lacking in tracking (20mm being pike lowers IIRC?), the coil U-turn spring is the same as was used in coil pikes/revelations IIRC (and solo air is active enough), motion control and standard rebound are useable. They may not be upto to standards of RS Blackbox or Fox damping, but IMHO/IMHE you’ll have enough harshness from the rear end to be worrying about the fork damping

I’d reckon sectors/pikes/non-silly-bells-and-whistles revelations would suit the bike pretty well

Nah, they’re 2010 Revelations but less good. Nothing wrong with that but people seem convinced they’re tougher than Revs, not the case.

I got my Rev Teams (with blackbox and maxle) for £300 used… I’d do that if I was you. Pigs and Bops really can benefit from all the fork you can throw at them

I’ve got an old set of 130mm bombers on mine I had Talas on it before but the bombers are miles better. Heres a pic cos I like it ;)I picked up the forks on here for 80 iirc

+1 coil Sektors or s/hand coil 454 Pikes

Had both. Pikes heavier but burlier. Sektors are an excellent trail fork IMO.

Bit heavy but it doesnt ride like it……. the ride is fantastic
115mm for singletrack through the forest, up to 160mm for bigger / steeper stuff 😀

how about coil u turn revelations, second hand if need be? I have a set on my Prince albert and they ar great shocks.

I am not sure if you get maxle recons at that length and budget? If so I would highly recommend those as well, I have a set of 120mm ones on my core 50 and they are one of the best forks I have ridden for general trail riding..

I’m building up a hardtail with Air 454 pikes they weigh about 2.2kg.

And what steerer length should I be looking for? Sorry if this is a really dumb-ass question.

Cotic recommended the Sektor coil u-turn yesterday when I asked about a 100-140 fork for a Soul (having also mentioned the twice the price Fox TALAS 32 to them).

I have some Dual Air Pike 454 on mine, which work nicely.

I also have some 2004 era Marzocchi Z1 FR SLs (130mm)that I might put on once I have replaced the bushings. They are about the same AC length as a 140mm Pike. they are 9mm QR though which is a bit of a shame but they are stiff for a QR fork.

If I was buying new I would be looking at 140mm Revs, Sektors, Marz 44 or maybe even a 160mm Marz 55.
I would definetly be looking for a 15mm or 20mm bolt through fork though.

You want something not daft heavy but can take a bit of hammer in my opinion.

Had a few days on my Sektors now, I’m pretty impressed.

Thanks for the heads up on the German site – ordered some Sektors last night. Is it me, or do they have some bizarre payments system? Apparently I need to wait for an email from them before I can arrange payment…no option to pay by credit card by the looks of it.

How was the service from them? Pretty prompt?

S/H Pikes would be perfect. Plenty of air u-turns about but I’d go for a coil if you can find one. I was lucky enough to pick up coil 454’s recently, hardly used and the steerer hadn’t even been cut 😀

Keep an eye out on the classifieds, loads of hardly used kit that people sell because they want this years sticker on a component or the latest component pictured in a mag. Gawd love’em!

Exilegeordie, the Germans have (had) a thing about credit. Something to do with everyone losing their money in the 1930s. Most mail order is done by bill payments – a bit like UK Faster Payments but it’s been around a lot longer. Debit cards exist in large numbers but credit card uptake is much smaller than the UK or USA.
