Sure its be done before but what are peoples experience of running a 11s chain set with 12s. I have an appropriate length crank for a new build but its 11s and the chain ring BCD makes get a 12s ring unviable (Prowheel with 76 BCD! cheaper to buy a new crank!). Reading around suggests an 11s chainring might result in chain suck. The 12 speed is Deore if that makes any difference.

    11 speed slx crank

    12 speed axs

    No issues

Should be fine.  Though chain retention on SRAM may be lower as the chainrings for 12s are somewhat more hooked by design.

Cool, that would be preferable then buying another crank, been enough spend drift on daughters bike already. It’s all Shimano other than the crank.

The extended inner plates on the Shimano 12 spd chain may not play nicely on your current chainring. Try it and see? I’d be inclined to get the right chainset – even if just to have all new drivetrain parts at once. Always feels amazing after riding an old roaches set up.

11 speed Next SL with 12 speed XT. Works fine.

It’s for a kids bike (though small adult sized now), I’ve been trying to teach her but feedback on mechanical issues is still a work in progress. Chain, cassette and mech are used. I’ll fit it and see, hopefully be obvious in the stand if it’s catching. Shame the cranks that cam with the bike are too long for her.

Yes if its SRAM or some other combo, but no if its 12 speed Shimano chain  and a 12 Speed Shimano Crank/Chainring. They just dont mesh together nicely at all.

Hmm, now leaning towards a crank but do have the option of a SRAM chain with the deore cassette. Starts to feel like a bit much of a hybrid though…
