Is it unreasonable to expect people to know the difference? Incorrect use on social media makes me think that they're just really thick. I get angrier about it than I should.

Like I said, I get angrier than I should. But it is surprising that so many people get it wrong

It is NOT surprising that so many people make so many mistakes.

Standards of literacy and grammar in this country are depressingly low.

I'm with the original poster on this one.

You shouldn't get angry about it at all

If you actually do, that's something you should work on.

what are you like when something serious happens that normal people get angry about.

Used to bother me when i was younger and wanted to feel all superior. Doesn't bother me in the slightest any more.
- I feel even more superior about that 😉

Natural evolution of language, innit?

I reckon words like dunno, innit and wot will all make it as standard English in the future.

My two daughters knew how to use they're, there, their correctly from the age of 8 or 9. They are now (15 &13) possibly even more pedantic than me about misuse. It can be done.

No it bloody well isn't. It's wrong.

Innit and what not coming into the language isn't the same at all. That bothers me less. I certainly don't get angry about 'they're/there/their', but I do judge anyone who can't get it right as thick. I doubt they care, which is fine.

Going to jump on the band wagon, annoys me when people say 'to' instead of 'too', you're and your are others.. i'm quite finicky about this kind of thing too.

When people say 'Alot' instead of 'A lot'

I'll be quiet now

There, their, and they're is a strange one, because I know the difference yet get them mixed up all the time. I'll pick it up straight away if I read it back, but while I'm typing, I'm already thinking of the next word and I guess my brain just picks up on the sound and chooses one at random, or something like that.

edit: I had to edit this post because I wrote 'work' instead of 'word'. Can't help myself. It sounds similar!

Is it really "annoying" or is it something else?
I don't get it.

If you read "there dog" instead of "their dog" do you get a puzzled look on your face, then feel the anger start to build inside you?
Or how does it affect you?

Erm, exactly how do you know they are using the wrong homonym?

Affect and effect. Even the BBC got this wrong on a recent rolling banner headline on News 24.

In my embarrassed confusion I shall have to resort to this:

In non-technical contexts, the term "homonym" may be used (somewhat confusingly) to refer to words that are either homographs or homophones.[1] The words row (propel with oars) and row (argument) and row (a linear arrangement of seating) are considered homographs, while the words read (peruse) and reed (waterside plant) would be considered homophones; under this looser definition, both groups of words represent groups of homonyms.

The english language is awash with laziness. Has been and always will be.

But the use of 'can' instead of 'may' 😐

It might be a Burnley thing, but the simple present form of lie/ lay is spelled laid, not led.

Nothing - as long as one is willing to learn. I don't understand why anyone would be proud of it though.

This comment isn't aimed at anyone in particular: it's an observation.

Aitch and haitch. Ironically 'haitch' only seems to be used by people who think they are being slightly posh by not dropping their 'aitch'.
