Yeah there was no major outcry at Sven and that was over 20 years ago. More of an outcry at his lack of tactical acumen, rightly.

Terrible shortlist.
Howe and Potter ? really ?? on the back of what exactly ??
Lampard and Gerrard ? Surprised the FA don't appoint them both, they never could face leaving one of them out. Probably offer Scholes the job of bucket and Sponge man under them.

Once again, decent squad of players, no one even remotely good enough to manage them.

It's all fun working out who's next, i'm not English, but i think Unai Emery would be a great shout for England manager, he's been around the premiership on and off, has flair and i could see him working out the pieces to build a decent team.

Why on earth would he leave Villa for the England job?

Southgate has once again read the room correctly and called time just before people got properly fed up.  Overall, I think he emerges with great credit, not least restoring pride in the national team - with both players and fans.  Just a thought for the Eddie Howe promoters......both at The Toon and Bournemouth he seems to have encouraged a really niggly way of playing the game and that will not endear the team to anyone.  Where Southgate came up short this time around was, having been brave and left some favourite big names out of the squad, he then fell into the old England manager trap of trying to accommodate all of his remaining favourites into the eleven without properly adjusting the system.  Now, some of this boiled down to the left back problem in early games but it manifested itself most painfully up front where there was woeful lack of movement and spontaneity for too long.

It's just the normal procession of big names who would never in a million years want the job, especially those who have managed in England and seen what a mauling the press gives the England manager. Klopp/Pep/Emery would be insane to even consider it.

And then settling for someone mediocre who has managed a couple of Premiership clubs but won nothing.

Steve Bruce?

I think we're ready for Sean Dyche, frankly.

On a more serious note, could we tempt Marcelo Bielsa over from Uruguay? That would make England watchable (including the post-match press conferences), although possibly not any more successful.

The players’ egos couldn’t cope with Bielsa. He’d have them picking up litter etc outside Wembley etc.

Why on earth would (insert name of manager here) leave (insert name of club here) for the England job?

I can’t see why anyone would join that graveyard of careers to deal with the ludicrous expectation and constant abuse. If you were actually any good, you wouldn’t have to give it much thought about dodging that particular bullet

The names being mentioned this morning - Poch, Klopp etc - wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole

Being English and doing a moderately good job of managing a premier league team. Being a premier league manager is a much more demanding job than England manager where you only play a few games per season and get to pick the best talent avaialble irregardless of price. International football is not the pinnacle of the sport.

No but I reckon managing any premier league club is a more challenging and rewarding job than being England manager. Managing England is the sort of thing you do when you've nothing left to prove at club level or if you've already failed at it (like Southgate and Allerdyce). With that in mind Lampard or Gerrard would be ideal candidates.

Lawrie McMenemy was never off the scene a few years ago or what about Kevin Keegan, he'd get you goals but concede more

Our little lad and his school friends have done really well this year, but the term is almost up so they've done one of those class tea towels to remember it by

Jordan and Phil have me cracking up

Apparently when Southgate passed the FA his resignation they took it for a moment, thought about opportunities to move forward,  decided against and passed it back.   Where upon Gareth played a crossfield pass to Foden who panicked and passed it back to Kane who knocked it 50 yards to pickford.

If the FA want to appoint an English manager

Steve Cooper has recently joined Leicester.

He's Welsh

Think I could satisfy most of the criteria but as yet not got a UEFA Pro License, but I’m sure my GCSE in woodwork and drama is transferable.

with a strong track record delivering results in the Premier League

Potter's application looking shaky.

Also, I hope mannie.neville@thefa.com has some help with inbox-sorting, or it's going to be a tiresome couple of weeks.

Isn’t Lampard presently in the frame? All the FA would need to do then is appoint Stevie G as his assistant, just to ensure a continual state of confusion

I fear we have begun the spiral of media linked contenders distancing themselves one by one.   Klopp, now Howe.  I give it a month before some desperation sets in and big Sam is called

A Triumvirate of Scholes, Lampard and Gerrard might provide a hearty hoot for the non England fan.

Scholes would accept the job then announce his international retirement half way through the first mornings training session

They have inserted a clause to prevent Big Sam getting a call.

-Will have strong personal values and integrity

Nah he'd be rumbled sucking Lampard's toes and nibbling Gerrard's toe nails. He's got form
