I don't really see what he gains if it's made up, sure he avoids a couple more embarrassing debates but I still think those debates are more of a risk for Biden. The swing voters are Biden's to lose at this point, if they're still undecided after 4 years of this shit it's unlikely even Trump could screw up the last two debates enough for him to cause them to swing Biden's way. And as long as he doesn't say F*** the police or farmers etc. his rabid base isn't going to care how badly he does in debates.
I'd go more for the conspiracy theory of he gets someone to off Melania (she obviously has dirt on him) and blames it on Covid and gets the swing vote due to sympathy.

Really, I get what you mean, but if you were to draft a list of people on earth who'd claim they had it, when they didn't to gain a political advantage, he's got to be near the top of the list.

I don't believe for a second he has it. It's an election tactic. He can avoid debates and any further scrutiny and reap the sympathy vote. It also puts the Biden campaign on the back foot. They can't exactly attack him with all guns blazing when he's 'unwell'. Then he'll come back victorious just before polling day, showing what a strongman he is and how the virus isn't as bad as everyone's saying, proving he was right all along.

He's spent most of the year downplaying it and saying it's a hoax, then ignoring advice and holding rallies without masks. Getting it makes him look really bad and prevents him campaigning, there's no way this helps him.
