"In God We Trust" .... Laughable. "To Golf We Must" is more accurate.

ChatGpt:
During his most recent inauguration in January 2025, Donald Trump did not place his hand on either of the two Bibles that his wife, Melania Trump, was holding for him. His left hand remained by his side while he raised his right hand to take the oath of office.

Key Details
  • Bibles Used (and not touched): Two Bibles were present: his family Bible, given to him by his mother, and the historic Lincoln Bible, which was also used in his 2017 inauguration and by President Barack Obama in his two inaugurations.
  • Constitutional Requirement: The U.S. Constitution does not require a president to use a Bible, or any religious text, when taking the oath of office. It simply requires the president to swear or affirm their fealty to the Constitution.

A properly God Fearing Orange Ringpiece...

Back to the social media thing - if they are checking via passenger lists how do they know they have the correct John Smith? Or is that discovered when they check the phone in immigration?

You are asked to disclose social media account names and to make them public when applying for a visa, probably also when applying for an electronic waiver (anyone done that recently?).

Interesting timing. I was just doing some house tidying and came across an old passport with my Indefinite Non Immigrant Visa for the USA. The documentation related to it is all very polite and pleasant..., how things change.

Jeez, I had no idea Hegseth was that ****ing deranged. Properly terrifying.

I think it’s deep rooted embarrassment and anger at never becoming a special forces operative and being able to kill brown people without repercussions. “What did you do in the war, daddy?” “I wrote about it…”

He’s got crusader tattoos n’all, being made Secretary of War probably means he wakes up with a stiffee every morning.

Having a nostalgic moment for which box to tick for ‘Moral Turpitude’ on a piece of card on finals to SFO. Oh I miss the old days….

I think it was the closeted J D Vance who thoroughly enjoyed spending his military career taking pictures of sailors and marines.

Hegseth I believe was a not too surprising grunt, and involved in quite a bit of combat action.

Trump of course was a draft dodger .. some medical condition apparently - bone spurs or hands too small to hold a gun I think.

I hadn't been aware of the tattoos, and I'd rather leave thoughts of a stiffee to his recently widowed good friend.

I’m not sure that bit is particularly true.

“Pete Hegseth, who now serves as Secretary of Defense in the second Trump administration, is often presented as a “combat veteran” and military expert. He is both — but only in the most generous, shallow sense.

Hegseth served in the Army National Guard after graduating from Princeton, and he did deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was awarded a Bronze Star and a Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), having served in civil-affairs operations and as an adviser in Afghanistan.

But let’s be clear: Hegseth was not a front-line leader of combat troops under sustained fire. He did not command an infantry company in protracted combat or lead exhausted soldiers through night patrols and firefights.

He served honorably — but his service is not what he markets. What he sells is the image of the modern American warrior as loud, aggressive, and built for Instagram, not endurance or humility.”

He also rose to the rank of major, but then fizzled out. That means that he was a competent middle manager but judged unsuitable for managing larger organizations. I suspect a lot of his grudge is that he doesn't understand why he wasn't promoted to more senior ranks and is resentful of those who were.

He’s staying as classy as ever and doubling down, just in case he’s not quite been insensitive and offensive enough….

Asked by a reporter if he stands by his statement on Rob Reiner’s death after a number of Republicans have denounced it, Trump doesn’t offer any sympathy, doubles down on his dislike for Reiner AND refers to himself in the third person.

Well, I wasn’t a fan of his at all, he was a deranged person as far as Trump is concerned.

He knew it was false, in fact it was the exact opposite, but he said that I was a friend of Russia, controlled by Russia, the Russia hoax, he was one of the people behind it.

I think he hurt himself career-wise, he became like a deranged person, Trump derangement syndrome.

So I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all, in any way, shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country.

Trumps sues the BBC. Part of the claim says that while Panorama isn't broadcast in the USA through either BBC-USA or iplayer, BritBox is, and 'something something' people are watching Panorama there (although it's not part of the Britbox package). The claim goes on to say the evidence for this is the increase in VPN use...Coincidentally; Florida has recently banned Pornhub...

President Trump wants $10bn from the BBC.
It's based on the hope that they'll cave-in and agree a settlement like CBS and ABC did in the US, rather than the expectation of a legal win.

I'd expect the BBC to sit back and let him get on with his claim. In the words of one BBC show, "Don't pay him a penny, Pike"

And walk away from this too. It's already being wielded as a weapon and will cost us a stack of energy, water and access to our data while employing about five people when the construction is finished.

AI is forecast to be the next big financial bubble to burst

Dec 15 (Reuters) - The United States has suspended a technology deal it struck with Britain earlier this year which was intended to boost ties in artificial intelligence, quantum computing and civil nuclear energy, the Financial Times reported on Monday.
British officials on Monday confirmed the U.S. suspended the deal last week, the FT said, adding that U.S. President Donald Trump's administration was pushing for Britain's concessions in areas of trade outside the tech partnership.

Those settlements had nothing to do with the merits of the claims though. The CBS one in particular was just a cost of doing business  - paid to prevent a delay in a larger transaction. Trump has a bunch of other suits with other news outlets NYT and WSJ - that are just going nowhere becuase they are baseless.

NYT saying its two claims of $5bn each - one for 'defaming trump' one for 'violating Florida's Deceptive and unfair Practices Act'

there may of course be a difference between what Trump's legal team (crack lawyers that they are) have said they've done and what the BBC's lawyers have actually received from them.

Sounds like Trump hasn't got a leg to stand on with his claim against the BBC. He's just totally trying it on in his continued campaign to bully the media generallly into not saying anything negative about him. And why wouldn't he, given the propensity of US media organisations to collapse and wave the white flag upon the sight of a legal letter?

If you were interested in how Trump became so litigious then this has just come on Netflix, after no streaming services would touch it for a while. Its a brilliant film about Trumps early career and specifically his relationship with dodgy lawyer Roy Cohn, another truly vile human being who seemed to have taught Trump everything he knew. It explains a lot....

It won't help with anyone not in the US, but there are some in the US, optimistically for them, suggesting hell find himself increasingly neutered domestically as the GOP look to a post Donald presidency, after a run of losses or close calls that shouldn't have been close are starting to focus minds on Trump no longer being a means to stay in power, but to lose it.

If, and that's a big if. That does pan out. It might actually be even shittier for everyone outside of the US as I believe hell still have lots of foreign policy levers to pull, such as interference in European elections, murdering fisherman, whatever racist drivel he shits out each day

Is it possible to have fewer than zero legs to stand on?

It would be funny if it wasn't so tragic. Sign up to serve and get made to look like a bellend' by your commander. I know some good blokes that side of the pond, and they're dismayed at the reputational harm he's doing to the service. Amongst a few other things that I won't derail the thread with.

A lot of people must now be realising what a terrible idea it was to vote for Trump. Turkeys and Christmas and all that. There was an article in the Observer on Sunday about the farmers of the mid west who all voted for the orange toddler. Their main crop? Soya. Their main market? China.

Now they're all, somewhat predictably, utterly and completely ****ed! Trumps tariffs decimated their entire financial model overnight and now they're all going bust and losing their farms. The beneficiary of all this? Argentina, who said thanks very much, we'll happily supply the Chinese market with all the millions and millions of tonnes of soya they could ever need.

Making America Great Again indeed, eh?

More of a question than anything...but can you refuse this shit? It seems to happen more there than here, but it does happen here too? Being made to be a backdrop to a political grand stand. Not a governmental one as such, but a political one with a huge dollop of self interest. If you join the military they have very much bought you...but there has to be a line somewhere.

Yes, I suspect the MAGA crowd are beginning to realise they were useful idiots - it was always going to happen eventually. Even turkeys realise their mistake when the cleaver is coming for them.

Of course it doesn’t really matter now they’ve served their purpose….

Of course you can refuse. If you think the response is worth the career suicide and in some cases, the jail time.

There is also the impact on future career opportunities with a discharge due to military offences. We call it an administrative discharge, they have a wider variety like 'dishonourable' etc. but same sort of issues as being sacked essentially.

Yeah, sadly I've been the backdrop of a few, Brown visiting Iraq, Cameron Afghanistan. I actively tried to avoid them but as you point out, they own your arse so unless it's in unlawful order territory you're voluntold.

Not where I would have thought to look for you....... / sarcasm/

If wasn't currently trying to hang a Union Flag from a lamppost with electrical tape I'd be offended.

Its all beginning to look rather sad and somewhat disturbing.

If Trump has mental decline to the point that Alzheimer's is the underlying issue, then what we have could be kind of a case of elder abuse where he's basically being manipulated by those around him.

Just when you thought you couldn't hate the potus anymore than you already do, along comes the renaming like a proper unhinged dictator, The Trump - Kennedy Centre...

I wonder if due to fate the same unlucky outcome will await the additional namesake of this wonderful building. It would truly be a sad end to a naming partnership such as this.....

And the war on scientific evidence continues, to be replaced by the evidence-free quackery of tinfoil-helmeted fruitloop Robert F Kennedy

Government by conspiracy theory.

Truly terrifying shit!

As per most things Trump. It appears that he's over promised and wildly underdelivered. Who could have ever seen this coming?

I do wonder just how bad the files are for Trump that he has to go this far to block them being meaningfuly released.

although all the DOGE cuts failed to actually make any of the claimed savings, and it seemed like their actions were chaotic and uncoordinated what was achieved very effectively was the removal of the all the aspects and mechanisms of government to gather, measure, collate and publish data. Its a curious strategy as Musk and his nerd army would be people who value data over pretty much anything else, and its not a case of grabbing data for themselves, or manipulating data for an end but creating conditions for there being no data. No information now and a huge gap in the records going forward that can never be plugged. The effects of RFK's various batshit initiatives are never going to be fully understood because data collection across all aspects of public health (and all aspects of government activity) has stopped.

Now I will admit that I find it weird that Michael Jackson is still deified by many given the allegations against him...but even Epstein looks uncomfortable in that photo.
