No reputable lawyer wants to work for him.

Which lawyer would work for someone who everyone knew hadn't paid his last lawyer?

So Trump leaned on his defence secretary Christopher Millar to order a “stand down” for the national guard over the capital coup attempt, sounds perfectly normal.........

That’s went well.............
I'd be so much happier if UK mainstream news outlets had adopted that approach to unverified misinformation from, say, 2015 on? Less climate denial, less anti-antiracism, les antilockfown/mask/vaccine nonsense, maybe no Brexit...
There’s definitely an argument for regulating the media further so that unsubstantiated claims aren’t legitimised. Treating News as entertainment has caused a lot of problems.

This all sounds great until governments start throwing satirists into jail. The Onion would need to shut down, for a start. Armando Iannucci would be thrown in jail for The Death of Stalin, so should Oliver Stone for JFK.
The reason the U.S. Bill of Rights includes freedom of speech is to protect people like that from despotic government. Problem is, free speech means that people are allowed to say things that you find objectionable, so sensible people are very vary of government regulation of media.
Yes, I agree that it's a fine line, but there are parts of the media that undermine and manipulate democracy itself, and thereby reduce freedom for all.
Even in the USA free speech is not an absolute right. For instance "fighting talk" is not allowed i.e. "tends to incite immediate breach of the peace". You're also not allowed to threaten the president.
I was listening to Louis Theroux interviewing Ruby Wax this morning. She really didn't like 3 people - her dad, Jimmy Saville who she decided was too creepy to interview and Donald Trump who dumped her and her crew - he just told the pilot of his private jet to land at the nearest airport and get them out of the plane.
Lovely man.

Newsmax had been pushing the various election fraud claims up until the point the voting machine company sent them a polite note asking them to apologise and to desist from doing it again if they didnt want to go to court.

The first amendment didn't impede the "fairness doctrine" that used to be applied to news organisations. In fact when tested in the supreme court the decision was 8-0 in support.

I wondered that- the bit that the anchor wrote definitely felt like it was written by a lawyer.

IIRC, last time Fox News faced a big lawsuit, they denied being a news service. I think they said it was just entertainment, not news. Similar thing applies to people like Jon Stewart, who was meant to be an entertainer but ended up being thought of as a news guy. Basically, unless they deliberately say something that they know is untrue and that causes harm, there's not really much anyone can do about it.
My god, James Dellingpole.....not even the Mail or Express will have him now then?
I really wish I hadn't looked at the rest of that site 😬

Alex Jones certainly tried that angle.
Double post.
Treating News as entertainment has caused a lot of problems.
That Pillow dingbat up there was certainly entertaining!

the earth is round....😁
Is that to flush out flat earthers?
Sometimes, you need to establish the basics
It's technically ovoid, but i agree that 2+2=4. You can demo that with apples. Or beans. Or fingers.
but a jury trial. Can you imagine how long it will take to find a suitable jury 🙁
I've never read a court document before. I never expected it'd start like that. Is that normal or just symptomatic of the petulant and infantile nature of the defendants? Entertaining nonetheless.
Ovoid is round enough for me.
US claims can be a lot wacker than UK ones. In England and Wales that opening paragraph would go in a speech or written argument, but not in the document that starts the case off, which would be a rather dry set of allegations of fact. Can't speak for Scotland though. In the US, they tend to stick evidence, argument and allegations of fact all in at once.

Something can be both round and flat 🙂

So, in summary, the house says...would love you to come and chat with us; trump says...gee, thanks guys, but I'm just too busy and don't really have anything to say to you.
Translation - you're a lying scrote and we want to skin you; fk you.
A la Ralph Wiggum, if you freeze frame this video you can spot the exact moment that James Dellingpole lost his credibility -
He's not been de-platformed, he's just been found out.
To save watching the whole clip:
Just heard a soundbite of Biden's speech where he was talking about America's position on the world stage. Actions speak louder than words and all that but my word it felt good to hear him say it after the last four years!
Trumps quit the actors guild now, they were due to kick him out anyway. He said they had done nothing for him, they said thank you.

After his pisspoor performance pretending to be the President of the United States, I'm not surprised.
Does that mean that he can't go back to appearing on The Apprentice unless he moves filming outside the U.S. or hires scabs to work on set? He's a lousy businessman, but he did make a shedload of money off that show.
...can spot the exact moment that James Dellingpole lost his credibility...
Delingpole and people like have no place discussing international trade as an appointed expert pundit. Delingpole is an essayist, whose job is to dress up a contentious issue with words and counter logic. Unfortunately, people who read The Spectator or Breitbart largely can't tell the difference or simply don't care. Delingpole genuinely doesn't know the answer to the question put to him that has Sam Gyimah and Caroline Flint openly mocking him. But sadly, that hasn't ended his career as it should have in normal times.
Way back in 2016, I was involved in an exchange with a Brexiteer from Lincolnshire on social media. The guy was as ignorant as cheese, but kept on posting videos from Leave.eu showing various EU parliamentarians being berated by UKIP MEPs. He asserted that they were "good telling videos", which he thought was great. There was no context whatsoever, any attempt to explain this was dismissed outright as "Soros has got to you". He was a huge fan of Delingpole, but when asked why his response was "he tells it like it is".
The best analogy I have for the Brexit and Trump cultists is the difference between an adult and a child watching an episode of The Simpsons - they're both watching exactly the same script, but have a vastly different understanding of the jokes.

TBF Martin,he should have been up for an Oscar in his role as an unhinged despot.
His performance was nothing short of spectacular.

Absolutely the best, most concise explanation for why Brexit happened I've seen since the whole terrible shitstorm started to rumble into life.
*Applauds*
*Stands and continues applauding*
Who can forget his electrifying and scene stealing performance in Home Alone 2, where his mastery of nuance and technique elevated him to the pantheon of true greats?
And only the most gifted character actor could play such an arrogant prick in the Apprentice so convincingly
Superbowl add.

This analogy also serves well the toppling at the Edward Coulston statue. Where many saw in the events a similarity to a Simpson's episode, or perhaps a Monty Python or Carry on sketch, those at the Specator and Telegraph saw a baying and deranged violent mob.
I recall John Gray (who I often read) commenting on the events at the Bristol docks by observing:
" It is not an exaggeration to compare the Coulston event to the Chinese Cultural Revolution"
Yes it is John, it's a huge exaggeration. I'd say you need to get out a bit more but maybe just stay at home and watch a bit more comedy on TV.
Is it too much to hope 17 Republicans will do their duty and vote for impeachment?
Yes.
Is it too much to hope 17 Republicans will do their duty and vote for impeachment?
I fear they won't. But I hope they will.
Not a chance they’ll vote to impeach, rats in a sack the entire lot of them.
I is sad
😔😢
agreed, they are cowards to the core
itll be his cases in NYC that stuff him!
I doubt anything will come of this but at least it's not instantly pushed under the carpet.

I know this is going nowhere anyway, but this Bruce Caster guy representing Trump is ad-libbing.
I like to see those non-entities whatever actors guild ganging up on Ex-President Trump because now they are all out in the open. Good. Whatever goes around come around ...
Is anyone else watching the opening arguments on this impeachment? The Trump lawyer has been blethering on for about 30 mins and has said not one thing relevant to his argument.
Does no one have the power there to make him get to the point or **** off?
Yep. His approach is very strange. Hasn't mention the unconstitutionality of this impeachment, just some vague stuff on the first amendment and people overreacting and wanting to blame somebody. And bigged-up the senators as special people.
Your timely reminder that whoever comes up with a working replacement for the killfile will earn themselves a crate of beer from me.
A lot of the Trump republicans are in his mould, not very bright and unable to process information without it being spiced up and short. His lawyers aim is to get them to switch off and not listen before the democrats start presenting their case.

Actually, the correct title of the former president is 'President Trump'. I would expect you to be more respectful, Chew.

President Trump it is. 👍
As for the current bloke in power the sleepy bloke what his name ... nahh ... nahhh ...NGAS (quoting the Aussie bloke commenting on another Aussie bloke weather forecast) 🤣
The response from the far east for the current bloke is pui! pui! pui!
Why can't this numb nuts drink from a bottle without holding the top of his head? It's not a wig so I'm thinking the stitches from when he has his brain replaced with candyfloss mustn't have healed.

Glad you've crawled back from under your batshit rock. This thread needed more insanity.
this one?
That's the one! He was proper tipping his head back before though, really looked like he was scared his scalp would tipple off.

The defence guy is an observant Jew, before taking food or water they recite a prayer and in lieu of a yarmulke will place a hand on their head.
Now he's trying to draw a moral equivalence between Trump's supporters storming the capital to the actions of Congress presenting articles of impeachment...novel, but I'm not sure how much water that'll hold.
Glad you’ve crawled back from under your batshit rock. This thread needed more insanity.
By all means let's have debate when the forumite referred to can conduct themselves without persistent trolling, otherwise it's best to ignore and move on.
Also Trump WAS impeached (for the second time) while he was still president. The argument made by the defence was tenuous. Senate Majority Leader McConnell did not bring the chamber back from recess to start the trial.
Glad you’ve crawled back from under your batshit rock. This thread needed more insanity.
Nahh ... the current sleepy "china" bloke what his name ... nahhh ... he is just a trouble maker. In Chinese there is a term for this sort of people and we call them 師文敗類 (don't google translate as it is inaccurate). I bet his is going to lecture us soon. We are going throw our durian fruit and salted fish at this bloke if he tries to visit us.
Ah fair enough Jamze and PMJ. Makes sense. Not a lot else does though.
Ah fair enough Jamze and PMJ.
A defence counsel is exactly that, they're paid to defend their client to the letter of the law and will have been chosen for their willingness to fight the defendant's case. I confess that I want to watch this guy react to videos of Maga rioters shouting anti-Semitic slogans in the Capitol and listen to him defend first amendment rights without acknowledging that the first amendment does not guarantee the freedom from consequence of one's freely spoken words, but that's just me.
"Actually, the correct title of the former president is ‘President Trump’. I would expect you to be more respectful,"
I thought the correct term was was President Reject?
former president is ‘President Trump
With a bit of luck he'll simply be referred to as 'Prisoner' in the coming years.
Actually, the correct title of the former president is ‘President Trump’. I would expect you to be more respectful, Chew.
This legislation suggests that "former President" is the correct legal term.
https://www.archives.gov/about/laws/former-presidents.html
(f) As used in this section, the term “former President” means a person--
(1) who shall have held the office of President of the United States of America;
(2) whose service in such office shall have terminated other than by removal pursuant to section 4 of article II of the Constitution of the United States of America; and
(3) who does not then currently hold such office.
LOL at the resident troll re-emerging when it looks like their idol will probably get away with it in this round.
