When I was 21 (an earlier lifetime), working for TWA at the Los Angeles airport, on a night shift at the lost baggage office, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor came in about 10PM to report their luggage didn't arrive with their flight. Took the report and checked with originating station in NY and found their luggage was on a following flight due in about 30 minutes. They decided to wait there in the office, so got to talk with them. She was probably 30-ish and STUNNING--eyes to die for. He had obviously had more than a couple of martinis, but was very engaging and funny. Got the impression he wasn't a guy one would want to cross.
Another time had to take a last minute business trip from LAX to NY and the only seat my company could get was in first class and I got to sit next to the country/bluegrass singer Emmylou Harris. Really nice conversation over the entire flight and she too was very easy on the eye.
Met Peter Beardsley at the Ice Hockey in Newcastle and he was proper sound, Also met Lee Sharp in a bar in Leeds when out with a load of girls from work they all cooed and purred and posed then rushed off to the toilet together, leaving me and a slightly shocked Lee Sharp stood in an empty bar. Hats off to the guy, he bought me a pint and preceded to have a really normal conversation, before all the girls came back from the toilet.
Met loads of musicians through the club I used to work in, some pleasant some complete tools.
Jimmy Saville always says hello too!
Most interesting was David Hemmings who was a wonderful raconteur with fantastic stories about the sixties, Ollie reed etc. If only I could remember them but I never managed to extricate myself from his company unpissed 😳 James Hunt was a nice bloke, Alex Higgins wasn't, Harry Hill top man. Most of the 'golf charity celebs' Ronnie Corbett etc.were good blokes.
Used to see Mickey Finn, Paul King and Charlie Drake regularly when I lived in Crystal Palace and my Dad was mates with Dennis Law and my Mum with Aneka (Japanese Boy No 1) 😆
Met many 'rock stars' over the years
Biggest probably Jon Bon Jovi - twice - he is quite short
Personal Favourite - Eric Martin (if you know who he is)- such a lovely guy and can't do enough for fans
Died and gone to heaven moment - Gabrielle Kerner - Nena of 99 red ballons fame - to an 18 year me clearly the most beautiful woman in the world
And though nobody ever believes me I have snogged Susanna Hoffs - still a stunner a 51
Plum
Met Chris Boardman a couple of times, sound bloke
Also various DJ's over the years but Danny Rampling being the nicest.
A few Golfers too, also met Paul Shane on the golf course!
The only time i was a little star struck was when i chatted to Jay Kay in Miss Moneypennys some years ago
I won't class the pro cyclists that I know as 'celebrities' as most people on the street won't know who they are apart from maybe Sir Chris H.
Lots of Chris Evans on here, thoroughly nice bloke I thought, he came to the velodrome with his radio show earlier this year:
watch the vid here
Him and the other guy were a great laugh, and Mr Evans' driver was an interesting chap, used to drive Jon Bon Jovi around till he got bored of the late nights.
I once met fred dibnah... He's ok :d
Another time had to take a last minute business trip from LAX to NY and the only seat my company could get was in first class and I got to sit next to the country/bluegrass singer Emmylou Harris. Really nice conversation over the entire flight and she too was very easy on the eye.
Bastard! I've stood three feet from Emmylou at a concert in the Jazz Café, and she is just beautiful, and her voice breaks my heart and I hate you.
Ok, leaving out getting things signed after gigs and book signings, where the intention is to meet a specific person, I've seen Timothy West and his missus in Bath, near where their narrowboat was moored up and got a nod and a smile, seen Melinda Messenger outside of WHSmith in Bath, she's really tiny. Sitting in a pasta restaurant in London and a lady walks past on her way downstairs and I realise it's Petula Clarke, who nods and gives me a lovely smile. Out for a meal in a restaurant with friends celebrating a birthday and we're all yakking about music and bands and realise that Van Morrison and his missus are sat at the next table down. Catch his eye at one point while raising a glass and get a nod and raised glass. Out at the Vail Worlds in '94 and get talking to Jason McRoy, lovely, lovely bloke, and later meet Missy Giove, who signed my Cannondale SuperVee 3000 with a paint pen. (Still got it). April last year I had some time off and went up on Cherhill White Horse to take some photos and saw this couple walking from the far side of the hill, and as they came down towards me said hello, beautiful afternoon, how's things? Like you do to Robbie Williams and his now wife. Fit bird, too.
The Queen.
Prince Edward.
Brian Clough.
Peter Sellis.

I was once Beryl Burton's "minuteman" in a 25 mile TT. She had a nice chat before the start. I didn't catch her though.
She was my baby sitter at Herne Hill, while my mother was on the track. 🙂
Molly Swan, former chair of the WCRA, once left the baby at Herne Hill 😆
I shoulderbarged Prince William squarely in the sternum coming out of Morrisons in St Andrews. I wasn't looking where I was going cos there was a Citroen rally car parked outside for some reason. He can take a hit, and thankfully waved off the crack MI5 death squad that were training their sights on my forehead. Probably.
Also told Christopher Daniels to f*** off at the Leicester Square premier of Star Wars Episode 1. We thought he was just some arse trying to muscle his way to the front of the queue. In my defense, I didn't recognise him without the gold droid outfit.
luked2 - MemberA looong time ago I used to play Bb cornet in a brass band.
Hehe. Me too.
I met Bjork a long time ago on a train with her then baby. Had to help her carry everything off the train and up to the station platform at Sheffield. I was coy and decided to pretend I didn't recognize her even though I was going to see her play live that very same evening.
Regularly see Max Clifford at a coffee shop in Weybridge at the weekends. Seems like nice bloke, but can't park his Bentley and now new Rolls for sh1t. Always gets his young wife to park it - she is a good looking woman.
Got a bit frustrated with Nigel Kennedy when boarding a plane into the First Class cabin. Couldn't quite understand why this "scruff" was (a) taking so long to get to his seat and (b) why is was in First Class anyway. Then I saw it was his violins that were holding things up and it all started to make sense.
Also once travelled to NY on the same flight as Benjamin Netanyahu. Quite pleased to discover that at the end of my flight rather than the beginning mind you
I once literally bumped into Kevin Spacey (both walking round the same corner from opposite directions), he used to wear a baseball cap pulled down quite low to avoid being recognised. He was pleasant enough when he was recognised though.
Cycling related - I know pretty much all the various GB track squads, a lot of the roadies and various staff (Dave Brailsford, Chris Boardman etc).
Oh and I was on Blue Peter when I was about 8 so got to meet Yvette Fielding, Karen Keating and Mark Currie!
Had tea on the lawn with the redgraves, they are lovely people. I have met them a few times.
was at university with Peter Kay, sound bloke - saw his first ever stand up, it was a uni assessment in an upstairs of a boozer in Salford
Roger Lloyd Pack, turned up to a gig I was doing in manchester, paid the entrance like everyone else and got stuck into the beer and dancing. No, he wasn't wearing his blue suit...
John Noakes - met him at a book reading by Jim Perrin following the publication of his book on Don Whillans called 'The Villain'.
I got all dewey eyed and nostalgic for someone who in childhood you'd thought was a bit square and boring (Go With Noakes was never cool until after you'd grown up and realised how much you loved the outdoors) but who in adulthood had become a legend.
i worked in a bar in brussels and we had a few in as it was in a busy area. of the few i remember
Matthew McConaughey = complete bell end
the cranberries = sound
pele = very nice bloke
ally mccoist with walter smith = both sound til ally decided to try sleaze all over the lasses and then ask non stop where to find hookers
noel from oasis = sound
thom yorke = really nice bloke very quiet
and finally and of note the girls from michael flatleys lord of the dance = easy as a big sack of easy things on easy street - happy days 😉
Jim Davidson: Very unpleasant. This might be because he got me bared from a Bristol for taking the piss out of him when he objected to me not finding him funny.
Craig Charles: Genuinely pleasant. This might be because we got extremely drunk together one night in Lyme regis and happily took the piss out of each other all night.
Michelle Ryan: Quiet and shy, though bloody stunning and courteous, her dad a gent. This might be because he bought me a pint for telling the gawping fans to sod off and leave them to their family meal. I hadn't a clue who she was at the time, just noticed they were not enjoying the attention.
got out of my mind with Boy George
had a wee next to Alexander McQueen. I was dressed as Father Ted.
Right the list that I have encountered :-
Beryl Burton (World Champion Cyclist)
Molly Swan (Chair WRCA)
John Cleare (Mountain Photographer)
Doug Scott (Mountaineer)
Bill O’Conner (Mountaineer)
Ron Lobeck (Weather forecaster for TVS)
Frederick Coggan (Archbishop of Canterbury)
George Carey (Archbishop of Cantebury)
Sir William Gladstone (Chief Scout)
Julie Tullis (Mountaineer)
Terry Tullis (bit of a story behind that one)
Bill Hurlow (the frame builders, frame builder)
Mr Joolze (we’ve had some epic adventures)
The Queen
recognize 2 off your list
John Noakes is from my home town 🙂
Sean Connery in the back of his cab once. Apparently he was one of the rudest people he'd ever had in his cab, which disappointed me somewhat.
I know his brother well and he's completely different to that. Top bloke
Anyway:
Billy Connolly - hilarious in real life, truly funny guy.
Sean Penn - moody
Emma Thompson - we got a photo with her worshiping a plastic owl with a fez and moustache, so she's clearly alright / mental.
Denise van Outen - hot!! I was only about 16 but she did a tv show from the resort I was staying in then went out drinking with us later. Good fun in the pub.
gt85 to gary wilmot? lol.
anyone sold wd40 to derek griffiths?
Richard Hammond. He just pulled up in a car park and appeared from a filming van.I was unlocking my commuter and he looked over at me with my bike. I politely nodded and rode off. At the time i was a student and hadn't watched top gear for a few years. I thought that guy seems familiar, and it wasn't until i started watching top gear again later i realised who it was.Doh..
He seemed really friendly and decent.
Also Shane Richie - he was in a carpet shop and kept himself to himself although he joshed with the staff.he was just like his character on eastenders.
Bez - He performed at a local gig i cycled too.I was coming out if the changing room, after a t shirt change and he came out of the backstage area before the gig. Bez looked very happy 😆
Had a pint with the lovely Alice Roberts.
Lucky ba5tard!
Met Lesley Crowther at Crawley train station c 1990. Very decent chap.
Bumped into Savo Milosevic and Arthur Daley at Heathrow in 1997/98.
Had a pint with Craig Charles at Euston in 2001-ish.
Most recently saw Chris Tarrant drinking in a pub (can't remember the name, but it had a slightly gothic interior) near the west end. Was in a very dour mood, so much so that we all figured he'd been on the end of some bad news.
A mate sold a copy of Encyclopaedia Britannica to Paul Daniels in 97.
My mate fingered a bird who looked a bit like susan tully (she of grange hill and eastenders fame) when we were about 18.
East Bay Ray - chatted on and off for half an hour by the merchandise stall after the DKs played Manchester Academy a couple of years ago.
Gene Krantz - famous for his 'Gentlemen, failure is not an option' quote when in charge of the failed Apollo 13 mission to the moon (character played by Ed Harris in the film). He was stood next to the Apollo spacecraft at Kennedy Space Centre.
The original Wailers (of Bob Marley and the... fame) - stayed in the same hotel as us in Whitley Bay after playing at the Fish Quay Festival in Tynemouth several years ago. Partied all night.
Recently stayed at the same chalet in St Jean d'Aulps as Chris Kovarik, Matti Lehikoinen & Claire Boucher. At various times Brendan Fairclough, Matt Simmonds, Andrew Neethling and Nigel Page were also around.
Used to chat to ex-Hudds Town footballers Steve Kindon and Keiron O'Regan in the garage opposite where I used to work.
Bumped into Mike Tindall in Waitrose - deceivingly big bloke. Brick shithouse, dressed like a sporty tramp.
At the Cycle Show last year I saw all the celebs being mobbed to varying degrees.
Contador - scrum 10 deep. Very popular.
Pendleton - Only viewed from the stage - probably best for her safety.
Shanaze Reade - nobody knew who she was - left her alone.
Eddie Mercx - Middle aged men reduced to gibbering idiots.
Met Grant Hart (Ex Husker Du) in a bar in San Francisco - he seemed surprised that I recognised him and that someone would come to the US just to ride trails - nice guy though - bought me a beer.
Also met Niall Quinn in a London bar and reminisced about his days at Msn City - top bloke although I would not like to get in a drinking contest with him.
Met Claire Goose when I was working on The Bill site - thought she was cute in causulty and she still looked pretty good.
Bear Grylls at a posh record attempt dinner....
Stood next to him in the buffet queue and sarcastically said to him that as a Paramedic Ive seen more born survivors on the streets of Brighton.
Don't think he heard ( or was in disbelief) what Id said....which was lucky as the grub was great and I didn't want to spoil that!
Peter Mandelson was on the same flight as me from Edinburgh to London last week

Oh, and Summer Glau of course. And Nathan Fillion, can't think why they slipped my mind on the original list. Anyway. (Very poor) pictures here if you're interested.
Met Jude Law playing cricket against him. Knocked him for 6 then he bowled me next ball. I take him out for a ride now and again - get some great double takes when you roll up to the group you are going to ride with!
Oh, and Summer Glau of course
'wimper'
I stayed in a hotel in New York and shared a lift with Sigourney Weaver, She was very polite when my wife said something about her shoes - talked away about them.. really nice lady.
Paul Weller. At a service station on the M1 very late one night, he was standing having a coffee, scowling as he does. Approached v. nervously, told him how much I liked "That's entertainment" he was pleasant and chatty, and i was relived...
The teacher who used to direct plays at my school knew a bloke at the props dept at Elstree, and we'd go down in the school van to 'borrow' bits every now and again. Doing "The importance of being Ernest" i was carrying this huge overstuffed type chair on my head, weighted nowt, but awkward, so was having difficulty opening doors, this American woman comes behind me asks if I need help, I said yes, trying to get to the car park, she says that's where she's going. so we chat as we walk, this that, nothing really, get to the car park, put down chair...Sigourny Weaver wishes me good luck with your play...
Looking over these posts reminded me of someone else I met.
Long time back (around 1990 or so), but had a beer (several actually) with Ozzie Ozborne and his drummer Randy Castillo (also played with Motley Crue and died in 2002) at a hotel bar here in Albuquerque. Randy was from Albuquerque and the bartender, whom I knew, said Ozzie was in town visiting Randy and doing a little drying out (not that one could surmise that based on the number of beers consumed). We stayed in the bar after it closed for a couple of hours. Nice guy, seemed pretty normal and much different than his stage presence.
Spotted Tom Baker in the Racing Page in Richmond, one of my mates said quite loudly, "Look it's Tom Baker!", to which he replied, **** OFF just as loudly. Made my day that did....
A season of working in Courchevel 1850 we regularly saw:
Eddie Jordan
Jacques Villenvue (sp?)
Kylie
Robbie Williams
Andrea Corr
Pierce Brosnan
Shared the cable car with Villenvue and Brosnan. Very pleasant.
Also met various pro surfers like Nat Young, Beau Young, Gary Elkerton and Shane Dorian who have all been here for the surf...although Elkerton was more interested in beer 😆 All really nice people.
To keep it on a cylcing theme...:
Was at the MTB World Champs in Chateaux D'Oex in Switzerland in 1997 and ended up renting an apartment beneath John Tomac's. Said hello to him a few times and he seemed pleasant enough. My mate managed to get a couple of his cast-off tyres out of the bin in the basement. Nowt wrong with them.
Also took a pi$$ beside Gary Fisher at the same event. Said hello to each other, but it was pretty awkward to be honest.
Went along on the road ride with Lance Armstrong from Paisley last year. Managed to hange on to his 'group' going up the climb from Howood to Bowfield, where the other 250-odd in the peleton were jettisoned out the back. He ended up chatting to the 40 or so riders who were left going over the Glennifer Braes. Top bloke. My mate and I had a wee chat about the weather and what to eat on a ride, for some reason. There was even a bit of banter when he tried to jump a red light. I'm not sure he fully understood the Glaswegian sense of humour however...
Im surprised Lance understood glaswegian at all tbh!!
met Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers - complete bell end
the guy from Crystal Maze Richard O'Brien - top chap
I often see Bob from Emmerdale out jogging when I'm out on my bike, keep meaning to get a photo
Cycling ones?
Shared a lift with Peat and his mechanic in Les Gets for the worlds when he crashed within sight of the finish...2005?) Did a pre-lap of the Bontranger 24/12 with the man himself (didn't realise it was him till afterwards) really nice guy.
You mentioned Bonty?
Took him out over Exmoor, a real gent.
Some guy called Chipps was with us, is he famous too? Kept following us all day.
