To launch the new mountain bike trails at Cragg Quarry in Rossendale, Lancashire, we are having a launch ride out there on Saturday 1st May.

The idea is to meet at the Buck Inn, Cowpe at 10am. We'll have some coffee, do a bit of pre-ride faffing and then roll out and up the Mary Towneley Loop to Cragg Quarry. There will be plenty of time to put in a couple of laps, at whatever pace you fancy, on the excellent new red grade loop before heading back down to the Buck Inn for beers and food if you're in the mood.

Here's a link to a map, showing the location of the Buck Inn.

The new trail uses the former quarry landscape and makes the most of the flowing, rolling lines of the place to make a fine example of 'flow country' riding. There are plenty of berms, rollers, ups and downs to pump and pedal to your heart's content. The trail complements what is already at Lee Quarry. It is also a little bit different. I think it's really good. Please join me and see for yourself.

The trail has been designed by Rowan Sorrell and been built by his company Back on Track. The Cragg Quarry trail is the latest development in the progressive trail building project that is taking place in Lancashire.

So are you coming or what?

Sounds great....may also meet everyone up there as I'll be coming over from Rochdale. Having said that beers at The Buck afterwards sounds good!

Was up there today and met a good bunch of lads. Managed a couple of loops and it's fantastic. The trail works you hard and keeps you on your toes - going to try and get up there at least twice a week.

There's nothing like a gentle climb to start the day......and that's nothing like a gentle climb!

Those that want to race up there are just as welcome as those who want to amble along on foot. We'll all get up there and it's definitely worth the effort.

I must admit the one and only time I've ridden up that way it was my breakfast that was coming up. What a great way to start a 47 mile ride 😳

Sounds like fun, count me in.

Sort of as long as you want really, the quarry is only about 1.2 miles long so I would assume a lap of the trails can't be more than 3 miles. The ride (push) up to the quarry is probably about 2 miles.

The Cragg Quarry loop is supposed to be 4.5km (2.8 miles). However we kept putting extra turns in and deviated from the originally planned line to make best use of the shape of the ground, so it could be a bit longer!

Will be a good chance to meet you before the Skills course we have booked on the 20th of May with you.

Will have to dust the cobwebs off the old iron pig as iv'e not used it for 3 weeks due to DIY commitments 😐

Can't make the 1st, so I took a sneaky trip up there last night to check it out.
Jees' that's one hell of a climb from the Buck!!!
Worth it though - the quarry's an absolute scream.

It's a bit addictive... "just one more drop", just one more berm", "just a bit more", "This bit was good last lap - I'll just do it again", "just one more time through that drop", "I'll stop and rest in a bit".

Really quite entertaining 😀
It just keeps egging you on faster and faster until you inevitably loose it and it spits you off so you can take a breather.

Warning though. The pub was shut when we got down about 9:30 😥

How do you get to Cragg Quarry from Lee Quarry? Is it possible at the moment and how long/how far is it between the two?

It is if you make a weekend of it and ride Lee Quarry on the Sunday. I could link you some accommodation if you're interested.

Might be more viable going across/down from Cragg to Lee and back to car along the road...

...I did try this last week and quickly ended up axle deep on what looked a good dry bit so rode down Rooley Moor Road and back instead 😉

I couldn't possibly endorse this but this is probably the best route short of the bog fest on the tops.

Took the Ibis Tranny for a ride round Cragg today. It's just about the most flowy trail in the UK. So much fun, and the great thing is that when you've ridden it once, you can just go round again.

[img] [/img]

The link route will be going ahead sometime this year. It will go from the top of Le Quarry over the moor and up to Rooley Moor Road (Mary Townely Loop). In itself it will make a great descent in to the top of Lee Quarry.

Did 3 laps of it today. Great fun, and uses the terrain in the Quarry very well. It pissed it down on me all the way round though 🙁

I linked it back to Lee Quarry with a cheeky path over the moors from RMR.

I'll be up for it, I live on booth road so i'll go down cat steps and cart on up Rooley Moor Road as per stumpyjons route.

Its a great view over cowpe that way as well

That route up behind the pub on the PBW will be a massive push for us mere mortals

It's a big hill but we have mountain bikes.....which can easily be push bikes 🙂

My 12 year old is coming and he'll be pushing so no one will be lonely at the back.

Thanks Ed, that really isn't helping, Nial's already a better rider than I'm ever likely to be 😆

Everyone else, I'll be at the back, looking at the view (probably my breakfast).

I had a ride up there today to gps the route out so I can make some maps and signage (another tough day at work!). Its dry and fast at the moment and its getting better all the time with a bit of use. Hill going up from the Buck is steeper than I remember it I had to push 😳 it was fun on the way back down though. Ranger Bill has had a lot of the ruts filled in on the hill so its much more usable than it was a couple of months back.

Once we get Cragg and Lee linked its going to make an excellent few hours riding.

Met the landlord from the Buck today he's going to come out on the ride with us on Saturday.

Don't forget Brownbacks racing at Lee Quarry 30th May still time to enter!

Had a good ride up there last night with some of the volunteer Rangers and a couple of others. It took us about half an hour to get up the Mary Towneley from the Buck Inn, with a mixture of riding, pushing and chatting. To get back down took about 8.5 seconds! Nice Timothy Taylors Landlord in the pub after as well.

Should be a jolly day on Saturday and it looks like we'll have a good sized group along from far and wide.

The path to Top of Leach is the Pennine Bridleway. Follow that up and to the left and you go through the quarry.

Went up today, got utterly soaked, but enjoyed it. Only managed one lap though, so, so wet..

Bad news is that I can't make the ride today:-(

good news is that my missus gave birth to a baby boy at 3:45 this morning!!

He is a couple of week early but I don't care 'cos I'm the proudest man in the world.

Hope you all have a good ride.

Well that was superb, the new trails really flow well. Fantastic berms, short climbs, really steep drops, all pretty smooth. What an excellent set of trails and a nice bunch of people to ride them with to boot. All topped off with a lovelly pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord, onion & steak baguette and a plate of chips in the Buck Inn at Cowpe. And I got home before the 1 cm hail stones started coming down, don't think some of the others were so lucky. For those of you asking about the route up to the quarry, here's a map. The blue route is the legal bridleway (but is a b*gger of a climb), the red is a cheeky route using a few hundred yards of footpath although people ride it fairly regularly.

Gutted I arrived late but good to hear you all enjoyed the beer, I was sorely tempted but glad I got my priorities right & stayed up there. Trail is fantastic, flows great and gets better with every circuit - see what you mean by addictive now, I had a ball! Huge thanks and appreciation to all involved in the project, you've played a blinder! Up there till 6ish & got away with just a few spots of rain although the wind got up later. Be up there again very soon methinks... Hope to cross paths again.
ps: sincere apologies to the guy who's eye I nearly took out with my lighter. I found it after doin another lap!

It is a cracking venue to get a workout and some flow. Mainly the former in my case!

Hope to meet up again...
