So the chainrings have now got some teeth missing and the bottom bracket is looser than a loose thing. It's fitted to an '09 carbon epic which i'm growing to love again after a winter of discontent.

What's the view[s] on upgrading the whole crankset as the oe set looks very tired after less than a year- i can't stretch to new xtr/xx but have seen some second hand xtr for a little more than new xt. so it's second hand xtr vs new xt vs whatever suggestions I get.

please lend me the benefit of your experience.

Ta.

Presumably the second hand stuff will have recently also have seen a winter of abuse, I'd go new if it were me or you could still end up replacing the bearings and chainrings soon, at XTR prices as well.

There'll be a reason the owner's selling their used XTR most likely... I was happy enough to get a shagged one as I was putting different rings on it anyway (XTR with Deore rings, always gets a laugh) but most times you'll get a worn BB with half-dead rings. Not to be a downer but used drivetrain is often (not always!) a mug's game.

Does any one in the evening crew have an opinion on this?

SLX seems like the nice balance point of cost vs weight and performance. XT is only about 40g lighter if memory serves. And once on the bike, personalyl I can't tell any difference between my XTR and SLX.
