I have have just been given an XML-T6 torch, it is impressively bright and my first thought was 'I could stick this on my bike helmet for night riding"

I am guessing it's a generic type of torch that comes with all sorts of names, but what sort of mount would work best, or should i just bodge something up with velcro and rubber bands?

I can't provide a sensible answer I'm afraid. I'm just here to say this thread reminds me of the old Tesco torches and discussions about bodging them on with bits of velcro.

When broke my Exposure Joystick mount I bought these pump brackets from Decathlon to tide me over. Worked really well and still using them.

I still sometimes mount a Fenix torch to my bike helmet with two cutoffs from an old tube. It works really well actually. You cut an inch length from a tube and the make a cutout in the middle of that piece. That allows you to pull each end of the piece through vents in your helmet. Then you pad the top of the helmet (where the torch sits against your helmet) with another folded section of tube. It’s very simple. And it holds the torch really securely. And you can adjust the angle of the torch by adjusting the padding under the torch.
