to add some balance to the riders who claim their ebike is just the same as a normal bike, loads of recent articles like this one....

https://cleantechnica.com/2018/10/31/electric-bicycle-fatalities-injuries-are-rising/

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2018/07/electric-bike-injuries-mount-102-e-cyclists-have-died-since-2014/

TLDR is 4 times the impact when you hit a pedestrian, harmful injuries doubled..+ you're doomed if you ride one if over 65....

Ebike is the only way to make Degla even remotely fun

Eldest_oab rode there last week and rode the whole red with an ebiker he met there. Said ebike rider was impressed that someone could keep up with e-bike... Both had fun.

Once again, is not the bike, it's the rider and attitude.

@singlespeedstu

As folks who ride with me will attest, I'm 'wobbly' rather than 'badass'. My attention span doesn't allow me to go in straight lines for too long.

But I am pretty good at using my elbows if required. 20ish years of playing ice hockey has provided me with some transferable skills!

Im 47 so I guess I’ve 35 years of dealing with ****s of various shapes and sizes, played shinty for Oban, shinty is like hockey 🏑 but without the protection of big girl pads/gloves/helmets so I figure my transferable skills beat you’rs ya big girls blouse . 😉🤕

Idiotdogbrain ,

When we go out together on rides, she’s knackered after 10k, struggles up climbs, doesn’t enjoy the descents as she’s out of energy from the climb, and ends up feeling like she’s holding me back and hates it. It’s a vicious circle that ends up with her not wanting to ride.

So we got a Turbo Levo. Now she hassles me about when we’re riding next. She adjusts the level of assistance so that when we’re putting in the same relative effort, we go the same speed (as borne out by comparing heart rates over the ride duration – average within 5bpm of each other). She loves cycling again, and in turn its making her want to ride more, which is getting her fitter. Nothing wrong with that as far as I can see. I just wish we’d got one years ago..

Can I introduce MrsbeanZ to your other half , I really wish MrsbeanZ would at least try an ebike .

Cheesy
I know both of ours are to big for Mrs beanz but as you well know you're more that welcome to drop over and try either of them out.
Not ideal size wise but it'll give her a good idea if she likes it or not.

I neither need nor seek compliments from some nobody on the Internet, I was merely correcting your comment whatever the grounds were.

It's funny how those who chuck around "Internet Badass" memes are often the worst example of that trope.

Singlespeedstu is a hero amongst men. A beacon of hope. A true Spartan amid a sea of us keyboard warriors.

He is. The internet badass.

Jolly hockey sticks for 'men' in skirts? Ha, yeah, alright...

Ice hockey players are moving much faster and often legally hit opposition players into a solid object (the boards).

By the way, what is the punishment for fighting in Shinty?

This thread is amazing. I’ve found out Llandegla is only fun if you can do the uphill bits quicker on an Ebike but you aren’t allowed to overtake on the massively wide first climb in case you get elbowed into the trees.

They are just bikes.

Nope. One is a bicycle and one is a moped. They are completely different.

No problem with people on any type of bike on any trail apart from the nobs on blue routes blasting past my 10 year old daughter rather waiting for a more suitable bit of the trail to pass. E-bikes just happen to come across as more aggressive due to the speed.. a polite excuse me is certainly more scarce from the powered brigade. A blue route with kids and occasional cyclist partners bumbling along is not the place for achieving roost/strava KOM's etc.

To be honest I don't care about all the KOM stuff, I do care about my kids getting passed at pace and closely or dangerously by heavy adults on heavy bikes, I really worry about accidents up climbs or on the flat where previously the risk was less as those riders were slower.

More importantly though, how do we know that burner and montblanc are not the same person?

We’re not

Other than the issues with people riding what is essentially a motor bike (albeit a poor one) on trails designed for push bikes (which is a whole other point for others to push); it seems utterly perverse to be using up even more of the planets resources to make and then charge ebikes. Yes some people have injuries/health issues or are old so that’s a genuine need. Others who are physically okay to ride, well....

Whilst I’m quite sure that most posters on this thread are less than serious, it’s quite amusing trying to spot the genuine eye rolling Daily Mail hyperbolic tripe spouting amongst the teasing and baiting.

As for Llandegla, it was ruined when they put the trail centre in. Back in the mid ‘90s when I used to ride there we had to make do with ‘muddy valley’, the aquaduct, the boggy bit up to the masts etc... We’d have killed all the ground nesting birds at Swinley with our bare hands for an e-bike, if only for the winch up from the Ponderosa after a mid ride food stop.

Na, keep it going, it's like a form of natural selection, people outing themselves as hissyfitting cockends on an hourly basis. 🤣

Brilliant. Did you come up with that all by yourself or did you see it somewhere else?

Never seen that before. Super clever.

Complete horseshit obviously, but clearly the product of a massive intellect 👍

Rubbish, what makes it fun is watching them pass me and my 14 year old on the ups for him to then hunt them down on the downs. Makes me smile and proud and really upsets a few of them.

I posted about my first negative encounter with ebikes in a thread on here a while ago, it was when some **** buzzed my nephews rear tire at cannock whilst trying to squeeze by, as I'm a rufty tufty builder he was told there and then to **** off and hold back. However you will get the dicks on normal bikes who chase kids or slow folk down on the downs and intimidate them also.

Ebikers, normal bikers, theres dicks amongst all of them especially at trail centres.

This thread needs a Venn diagram so we can work out who is causing all this trouble.

Both are bicycles, neither are mopeds. The dictionary version is slightly skewed as it might cover pedal and pops (as I know em) where you had to pedal the bike to start the motor, once the motor is running its a moped the pedals are no longer needed...

NO UK mopeds have used pedals or needed them in law for decades. a moped is defined as a motorcycle with a maximum design speed of 30mph and under 50cc engine

Do this really need explaining <em class="bbcode-em">every time

Some people assimilate knowledge a little slower than others. As the old linguaphone French course went 'ecouté et repeté'

But definitively? It has a motor and pedals.

Pedelecs do not have a maximum design speed of 30 mph, they are not subject to type approval, do not need brake lights or indeed any lights and have pedals. That somewhat distinguishes them from mopeds!

I can’t see what the issues with e-MTBs are, I don’t have one but they seem great fun and for banging trails must be a great tool for the job. Not so sure about some of the smug **** looks you get when you are blowing out your arse on a climb and some bloke who clearly has been enjoying the jelly babies too much, comes past you on one as if you are the unfit sod.

Road racing ebikes, now they seem completely pointless, I thought the whole point of road cycling was to see how much pain and suffering you can exert on your own body, surely a motor can only exponentially reduce that sadomasochist enjoyment.

I hadn't realised there was so many issues surrounding e-bikes. I'd always thought the mountain biking community was fairly laid back and open in its outlook and open to new ways of getting out and riding.

Turns out e-bikes are divisive and cause a great deal of annoyance among certain people.

I'm definitely buying one now!

All joking apart I think there is quite a lot of people who don't like ebikes. Maybe they don't come up to you and call you names but they might be thinking it.
