TLDR - but can I check - does 'taking over' mean barriers with checks to stop non ebikes from riding, because that would worry me. Other than that, its all riding, I can't see the problem?
Can someone lock this thread?
Please don't. This needs to be kept and carefully nurtured to grow like the brexit thread.
This thread needs a Venn diagram so we can work out who is causing all this trouble.

I think it's the dorks?
Na - Dorks!
Edit - I posted then the above poster edited!
I can’t see the problem?
They're having fun without earning it!!! The moral balance of the universe has been thrown off.

Wheels do that, I mean they let you roll, its like a free buzz.
Also if I charge my e-bike at home, I earned the money to pay for the electricity, so that's OK.
Its classic In / Out group behaviour.
In society as a whole cyclists are an Out group. Despite being a large and disparate group covering a range of demographics they are treated as a collective and behaviour of individuals is attributed to the entire group. Hence lots of negative stuff in the media from the In group (non-cyclists / motorists / walkers ) who are happy to "other" cyclists and attribute any negatives they see to the entire group. We all ride on the pavement, run red lights, scare walkers ad infinitum.
#bloodycyclists
In the cycling community (if such a thing exists) e-bikers are the Out group. Despite being a large and disparate group covering a range of demographics they are treated as a collective and behaviour of individuals is attributed to the entire group. Hence lots of negative stuff from the In group (cyclists) who are happy to "other" e-bikers and attribute any negatives they see to the entire group. They are all fat or rude, buzz tyres, scare children and walkers ad infinitum.
It only takes a modicum of intelligence and awareness to realise that by "othering" a group of cyclists we are basically supporting the original In groups agenda. To them, road bike, mountain bike or e-bike matters not a jot, its all still #bloodycyclists
Unfortunately as this thread demonstrates, sometimes even a modicum of intelligence is hard to come by.
Christ, your a knob.
Why thank you. 🙂
I've got 2 e-bikes.
One has road tyres, and has now completely replaced my motorbikes, which I have sold. Plus, for most local journeys up to 15 miles it has made my truck almost redundant.
The other is MTB, and is so much fun on ordinary local trails that I may never feel the need to drive to a trail centre again.
E-bikes have changed my life, almost as much as MTB's did in the first place.
Just my 2p's worth.
Mister crud. You've replaced your motorbike with an e-motorbike
Yes, but I can ride this one on bridleways. And I don't need to wear a helmet. And I am not polluting the planet quite as much. And it's actually more fun than my old motorbikes, for all those reasons and more.
Yes
Ah!ha! got ya! Admits its a motorbike! 😆
You'll be banned from the ebike community now!
I don’t need to wear a helmet
Hmm, we haven't had a helmet debate childish squabble for ages
(Nothing to say, sorry)

With an e-bike, you don't have to...
I suspect teh anti e bikers are actually roadies in disguise. Never met a roadie who is not grumpy
Ebikers would rather spend money it seems than time and effort improving themselves so they could ride up a hill using just pedal power.
If you are over 60 or have medical reasons then I don't mean you in this sweeping generalisation.
Those people who have got their other halves ebikes cause they couldn't keep up, can you ever see them bridging the gap from ebike to normal bike? Is that what we call them now? Analogue bike. Dandyhorse.
Never met and b-biker who was fit.
Perhaps Singletrack is advised to have a ebike issue and keep Single track magazine as an effort only publication. I'm not interested in one and it appears its dividing opinion too.
I'm happy without thanks
I thought the whole point of road cycling was to see how much pain and suffering you can exert on your own body
You're mistaken
Never met a roadie who is not grumpy
Everyone you've ever met riding their bike on the road had been grumpy?
Ebikers would rather spend money it seems than time and effort improving themselves so they could ride up a hill using just pedal power.
you're just trolling now!
Those people who have got their other halves ebikes cause they couldn’t keep up, can you ever see them bridging the gap from ebike to normal bike?
Maybe, maybe not. But you know what? It doesn't bloody well matter!
I just typed out a big post justifying riding for fun, with exercise as a fringe benefit, deleted it because actually there's no point. Nobody on this thread is posting because they're going to change their mind, are they? It's just pathetic, threatened old men upset by something new that they don't like or understand (see also gender nonconformity, fluid sexuality, changing fashion, new music, etc). Just because you might draw the imaginary progress-stops-here line at a freehub, the derailleur, suspension, electronic shifting, or whatever, doesn't mean the rest of us have to.
To be clear: I don't hate ebikes, or ebikers - I own a commuter one and think its great.
I've just experienced aggro behaviour on multiple occasions at trail centres and think those kind of conflicts will increase as the market grows - people on normal mtb's sometimes do this stuff as well but actually it doesn't happen that often because they aren't doing loads of laps and having to overtake pretty much every person on the trail on the way round.
Surely specific ebike climbs would be a win for both groups? It would definitely help at trail centres, not so sure what the solution is to natural trails, again no real problem with the actual people or bikes being there. More that I've been riding long enough to know the inevitable reaction of certain other trail user groups to big increases in traffic. Previously only those that could be bothered to ride there would be present, which was quite a good factor in limiting the impact!
OP definitely taking a pretty aggro stance though!
I’m going coedy at the weekend but it looks like rain so I should be safe from the ebike menace.
Guys, in my long eventful life I have seen this "Them verses Us" debate again and again. Let me give you examples in sports I have enjoyed...
Roadies verses Time Triallists
MTB'ers verses Roadies
Downhillers verses cross-country
Helmets verses none
Surfers verses windsurfers
Surfers verses long boarders
Surfers verses paddleboarders
Skiers verses snowboarders
Longbow verses compound bow
Motorcyclists verses car drivers
The list is endless, but the conclusion seems to be always the same... some of us couldn't care less as long as you are respectful, while the rest of you, well, you must just enjoy a good rant.
Just to spice things up and going back to the Op's and others negative E-mtb experience. Are we seeing exactly the same thing on the trails as cyclists experience on the roads. Some car drivers feel their extra speed gives them preference and dominance over slower moving traffic, mostly cyclists. They get angry and impatient because they feel their being held up.
Same thing with some e-mtb'rs. My engine makes me superior so get out of my way. The language from som e-mtb fanboys on this thread makes me think there's some truth in the idea. A couple of you need to reign it in a bit, one person in particular !!
I suspect teh anti e bikers are actually roadies in disguise. Never met a roadie who is not grumpy
From what I've seen the majority grumpiness/aggression comes from the ebikers...
but then I don't see everything, just dip in and out for the entertainment.
I was at Glentress on Sunday with my 6 year old , first time in ages i had been to a trail centre at a weekend for ages . Shift work allows me to ride in the week .
I noticed quite a few ebikes , i cant help looking at what people are riding as i love mtbs and find it interesting to see what people are riding . Anyway all i saw was people enjoying themselves . Everyone was friendly and said hello and was nice to my boy when we let people pass us on berm baby berm . Its all just messing about on your bikes in the woods and there is room for everyone and all kinds of bikes . And as for e bike only climbs ? really ? say that out loud to yourself and hopefully you will realise how stupid that sounds.
now the one thing i would say was taking over trail centres from what i could see is GMBN jerseys , absolutely loads of them .
I thought the whole point of road cycling was to see how much pain and suffering you can exert on your own body
You’re mistaken
The cake is a lie.
“Ebikers would rather spend money it seems than time and effort improving themselves so they could ride up a hill using just pedal power.”
Sometimes I use the motor to speed things up. Sometimes I don’t but I still keep up with other riders on far lighter bikes. I have a hardtail normal MTB too - that’s far easier to ride uphill than the e-full-sus because it’s half the weight and has a wider spread of gears.
I quite enjoy the mental challenge of refusing to press the button by my left thumb to get the motor to help out even when pushing myself to my limit up a hill.
I also go to the gym 4-5 days a week and lift heavier things than most MTBers can. Having an ebike allows me to push harder in the gym and still be able to cycle commute 5 days a week and do at least one proper MTB ride a week.
I’ve had this eMTB for 8 months and never ridden it at a trail centre.
Ebikers would rather spend money it seems
You know what you're right.
I've spent a lot more money on my none ebikes than my ebike though the ebike to none ebikes split ride time wise is about 50/50
It must be very confusing for some to know if I'm fat and lazy or not fat and not lazy when i'm not on a bike.
Sometimes its even more confusing as i'm on a none ebike but sat on my not fat arse in an uplift van or on a chairlift.
I bet Nick Knowles has an e-bike. I can’t bloody stand him. Or those skinny little handbag dogs.
Mind you, I didn’t used to like celery and now I’m alright with it.
Ned Overend weighs in:
https://www.velonews.com/2019/07/news/qa-why-ned-overend-is-excited-about-nica-and-e-bikes_498305
I’d love an ebike. It’s only the cost of a decent full sus that puts me off at the moment.
I don’t have time for full days out, so all of my riding is done in 2, sometimes 3 slots of 2 hour riding times across the week. In that 2 hours we usually fit in a big climb, a smaller one and a couple of descents. I reckon with an ebike I would probably double the descents within that 2 hour time slot and therefore double the fun. But then I’ve only ever ridden for the fun aspect rather than fitness.
Or those skinny little handbag dogs
How did Horace make it into this thread. Leave him out of it please.

From Ned's piece.
I did the HERO mountain bike marathon in Val Gardena and there wasn’t an e-bike category, but in town all you saw were people on e-bikes. It’s high attitude for them, and the climbing there is so steep that it discourages people from riding mountain bikes. So e-bikes were perfect for that place.
Just like Swinley forest then 😉
I was doubly fat and lazy today. Instead of riding my Tues at Leogang I took the ebike (150mm full suspension Trek) and took it ON THE LIFT!
It was flipping awesome, I actually preferred it the DH bike I think.
It jumps brilliantly and was still great on the steep techy stuff.
One bike to rule them all.
Actually e-bikes and their chubby riders can do one. I've had riders block pass on a climb causing me to lose all momentum, I've pulled over on a climb to have the rider catch me with his bars on the way past. The only time outside of a race I've ever collided with another rider.
And of course riding the wrong way up a descent.
I'd quite like one but you do get some utter ****s riding them. On second thoughts I'd fit right in.
🤣
Well they may take over trail centres but they're not going to take over PinkBike. Nosireee! There is a new filter that lets you miss anything flagged as eMTB.
I do wonder how much new features you're going to be seeing in a couple of years time though as eMTB will continue their rise in sales.
If I wasn't skint I'd be looking at one for bashing out boring bits of the Ridgeway - or failing that towing a trailer fully laden back from the shops.
The most interesting thing to arise out of this thread so far is the use of the word 'none' rather than 'non-e'.

It would still be dull, just faster.
